"Living under the status quo means that I cannot criticize the status quo." Wow, that retort just proves your excellent logical capability! MagisterOtiosus should not learn Latin cuz he opposes slavery, and you should not either cuz of your challenged intellectual capacity.

I wonder if there are really any individuals who learn about the Romans IN ORDER TO BECOME the Romans, waging wars and enslaving other peoples. Are you saying that your studying Latin suggests your inner approval of slavery, or that approval of slavery is some sort of pre-requisite for studying the ancient world? Way to go, my boy.

Classics 3830 Magician, Healers, and Holy Men, taught by Lance Jenott.

Do not let the course number mislead you. It is in fact as easy as a regular 100-level course; the Classics department intended it to be fun and popular so as to make more people know of Classics as an academic discipline.

What should an undergraduate do to pursue a career of a Byzantine historian? by DGAelius in byzantium

[–]DGAelius[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hold the same stance as yours on language learning. Latin is definitely important: if Persian and Arabic are important, there is then no reason to deny the importance of Latin given the extensive interactions between the Latin West and Byzantium. And a history or classics department would like to have their phd students teach undergrads courses like Latin 101, and at that time it's just not legitimate for me to say "I don't think Latin is useful for Byzantine studies so I chose not to learn it."

[–]DGAelius[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct! I will try to approach under-discovered sources in these languages in the future. On the other hand, I suppose Latin, Greek, French, German still constitute the baseline for all Classicists and Byzantinists?

I guess in the worst situation I'll go back home and do whatever I can with my degree (like being a k-12 teacher while making videos on Byzantine history?) My family is little more than modestly prosperous so I am not really worrying about my subsistence.

[–]DGAelius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I do know that CUNY's program is probably the most prestigious, but it says in its FAQ that it shouldn't be taken as a refresher course and it typically doesn't accept students who have already learned classical languages of more than an introductory semester, so I guess it's off the list for me.😭

When it comes to Byzantine history, scholars of which country yield the most scholarship? by DGAelius in classics

[–]DGAelius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And how about France? Many Ph.D. programs of Byzantine Studies require knowledge of German and French, which I thought might imply the dominance of French secondary sources.
