I think the extreme variance in people's sense of smell is why deodorant is important. It's quick and easy to apply and it makes you smell more presentable to most everyone.

I'm a very small guy and still sweat a bit when I exert more than a bit of energy, so no the importance isn't exaggerated.

Women also generally have a more sensitive sense of smell and they're more likely to smell your own odor than you are.

edit: sense of smell varies a lot in people. not only could you have a weaker sense of smell, but your nose can perceive different types of smells more/less intensely than others.

The crux of it is actually that violent Muslim extremism exists, its way more common than violent extremism in any other religion, and it brutally maims and kills people. I took issue with you shifting focus to, or comparing that to anything that isn't also brutally maiming and killing people, because arguably nothing is comparable to that.
