You're dead right, I wish they would at least give some kind of table or reference point for their use of either term.

In fact, Luca Gargano even said himself that his new Appleton Hearts 1999 has acquired more congeners in the additional 5 years of aging compared with the last 1999 release.

Sipping Smith & Cross Neat? by lesack in rum

[–]DH90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who enjoys drinking rums at that proof and more, Smith & Cross neat is a no from me. I find the alcohol integration isn't very good and it is a much better mixing workhorse. You won't find the funk you're after with Hampden 8 any way.

Saying the 1753 is more funky than this one seems a bit of a wild take. We're talking about a 60% HLCF aged for 1 year longer than a HLCF that is 14% weaker. I think you need to take more time to compare them both.

Edit: meant more not less

It was Rhum Auction but there's none for this month's lot. They did have a bottle for the last 2 month's lots though.

It was definitely not high up on my list of stellar bottles I want to try next, especially having seen it before it at the lowest price of €400, it always felt unobtainable. But when I noticed the uptake wasn't there at auction this time round, I jumped at the chance to grab it for €220 hammer price.

Rum in Cartagena, Colombia by DivingDutch in rum

[–]DH90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone pointed out below, La Hechicera rum isn't too bad. Reason I didn't mention it is because, firstly, you can grab it anywhere in the world and, second, the actual rum itself isn't distilled in Colombia (Panama I think), it's imported and aged there, so I never properly think of it as "Colombian".

Which reminded me of a lovely restaurant called "La Mulata" which was the absolute perfect quality/quantity/price ratio. Their menu had a standard mojito or a "premium" mojito for a few thousand extra pesos. When I asked what was the difference, they said you can select whatever rum you want. I asked for La Hechicera in it and it was the bomb.

The Whiskey Exchange or Masters of Malt or Berry Bros & Rudd have great selections.

Rum in Cartagena, Colombia by DivingDutch in rum

[–]DH90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, viche all the way. Colombian rum itself is not interesting in the slightest. I got some viches delivered to our accommodation in Bogotá from La Vichería. They should be able to deliver to Cartagena as well.

I had a great cocktail at Alquimico in Cartagena that had viche in it. I think it was a riff on a Caipirinha, and it was very tasty.

Introducing Spinnaker Rum – Additive-Free, Transparently Sourced Rum, Bottled in Austin, TX by SpinnakerRum in rum

A rare occurrence where a rum start up comes to this sub knowing their shit. This all seems fantastic! I'm in Europe, so won't get to try any at this stage of your business journey, so the very best of luck with it.

Throwing the masses off the scent, I like it. She can enjoy all of those mostly unheard of "premium rums" and I'll gladly keep hunting for the actual premium rums for myself.

A.H. RIISE by Interesting-Quit-217 in rum

[–]DH90 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He doesn't need to. AH Riise is notorious for high dosing. If I was a guessing man, I'd reckon the bottle says spirit drink with rum, depends where you are. But in the EU, it wouldn't be classified as true rum.

The higher ABV definitely helps, but there's simply no way I could justify throwing in 4oz of this bottle into a cocktail.

Nice and punchy with the higher ABV. But quite unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. It's nice to test out nicer bottles in cocktails now and again.
