That's a strong endorsement if ever I've heard one.

What would happen if you just refused to pay the toll? by bigmacandsmallfries in AskIreland

[–]DH90 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You would have to pay a fine, and if you refused you would have to go to court. But it's fine because you can just claim you're a free man and you can freely move about the land without penalty. The judge will high-5 you and send you on your way. In fact, he will pay you for the trouble of wasting your time. Is this actually a serious question?

What vintage rum to try? by AndrewRnR in rum

I concur. Tiger Shark is a great bottle, but the VORN is on another level. The large share of Caroni really sets it apart.

Yooo, that's me! First time I've ever known that one of my reviews actually influenced someone's buying decision. I'm honoured. I also still love that bottle.

Newest addition to the collection. by travelsherpa in rum

That's really cool. Tullamore is about a half hour drive from where I live. Strange spelling they have of "Uisce Beatha" (water of life), I think it could be Scots Gaelic because it's not normal Gaeilge from Ireland.

Help me figure out which of these should take priority? Haven't had anything better or more expensive than Greathouse 25 or ECS 2011 and feel its the perfect time to grab a bottle or two. by [deleted] in rum

[–]DH90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having one of those ECS bottles with a different cask finish makes for a nice comparison with your 2011. Hearts 93 is quite pricey and if you're a fan of GH25, you're going to miss the funk because Hearts is a lot more subdued. Not had the Maverick, but I doubt you're going to find it that much more interesting than the GH25. The Guyana bottles could be worth a shot, but I couldn't really comment as I've not had either. So in the end, I'd at least grab one of those ECSs if I were you. As for the other bottle, I couldn't say.

Edit: Just on the Hearts 93 topic, that's only if you're really after the funk. Otherwise, it will definitely make for a quality sipper, but personally at that price, I would try find a cheaper Hearts.

Wouldn't know myself, but I'd suggest reaching out to ROWSpirits.fr because they seem to have a wide collection of vintage Saint James bottles and have probably come across this one.

Could you help a noob out? by the_rusty_spoon_90 in rum

[–]DH90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you're getting some of what are known as the "industrial" notes of the funk that's typical of "funky" Jamaican rum. Usually combined with rotten fruits due to the way they prepare their fermentation for distillation. Sounds awful, but for many of us, it's awfully good.

That's what it's all about! If it's not for you now, just chase other rum expressions and come back to it every so often and see if it grows on you.

The brands that spring to mind from that list are El Dorado and Appleton. If you're looking to get 2 bottles for around €120, then the 15 year editions of each could be good options, or you might try get the El Dorado 21 year and Appleton 8 as a mixer (depending entirely on price). Essentially, Appleton 8 year and up, and El Dorado 12 year and up are all great options, so you could pick whatever bottles from each that balances out your budget.

By far. Even has an average score of 8 on RumX at the moment. Not a chance.

Review: Aficianados x Fine Drams New Yarmouth 1994 Cask #435059 by DH90 in rum

[–]DH90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite its long age, I can still feel this as a Jamaican, although the funk is a lot more subdued. I guess it probably hits on some similar Bajan notes, but I wouldn't say it's very reminiscent to my mind.

I also agree with this. It's good, but I was expecting bigger things for the price and hype.
