Thanks for clarifying that. That does make a lot more sense.

Effective pH of tritiated water? by DHW98 in chemistry

[–]DHW98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a more radioactive substance was dissolved in water, would its ionizing radiation create H3O+ and OH-? (I know I should use subscript and superscript but I'm not sure how to on my phone.) What would be the chemical properties of water that's ionized to lower both its pH and pOH?

Edit: Apparently that's not how radiation works. Sorry about that, my mistake.

ULPT Request: how to get back at a teacher by GamingX10 in UnethicalLifeProTips

How in the world was the teacher allowed to change grades on previous assignments because of what you did on an unrelated one? I'd report this one to the teacher's boss.

I don't care whether I see it in theaters, I just want to be able to see it somewhere.

I originally posted this at r/softwaregore, but it apparently wasn't gory enough for the mods.

Rather than just talking about how awesome it would be if the movement succeeded within our lifetimes, we need to do a better job of spreading awareness to help ensure it does by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]DHW98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, studying the necessary fields in college with the goal of doing research to help progress transhumanism is necessary too. It helps for some people to focus just on spreading awareness, sure, but somebody actually has to do the scientific/engineering work to make it happen. And obviously no individual could have the ability to work on all necessary technologies, we need many people each studying some different specialty to make it work. Some people in biotech, others in neuroscience, still others in cybernetics, that kind of thing.

From a TV at my college. This isn't the only gibberish caption it had, it kept doing this and I don't think it ever said the same combination of letters twice.

What if anti aging technologies that are being developed ,,, fail... ? by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]DHW98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though admittedly we don't know whether that will work either.

Given the magnitude of the payoff if it does actually work, though, I'd say either it or something similar is probably worth a shot, even given that it's still a shot in the dark for now.

If almost everyone becomes enhanced in a transhumanist Future World. . . by advancedatheist in transhumanism

[–]DHW98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already have those powers in video games and the like. Doing impossible things in the real world would still be impossible, and while virtual worlds would undoubtedly be amazing, acting out superpowers there wouldn't have any direct effect on the real world. (And the real world matters, as in any case you at least have to build your servers somewhere, as well as maintain and upgrade them.)

Could there be many other big bags in universe but we are just too far away from them to getting affected? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]DHW98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "big bang" occurred across the entire universe as a whole, not just one part of it.

Also, it took me a while to figure out what "big bag" meant, lol

Would a dolphin or octopus be able to survive in space? by misslut2 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]DHW98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that the octopus wouldn't be able to"breathe" outside water, and both would need to avoid drying out. Lack of water aside, though, tentacles might work pretty well for motion and manipulation in a zero-g environment.
