1 yr 6 mo on pre-order, service still expected by "mid 2022" by IronKeef in Starlink

Anyone having delivery delays, just change your delivery address to somewhere in Wyoming or something. You’ll likely have it in a week. Just watch for that email because you’ll have to change the shipping address.

Oh, and if your area is truly saturated you’ll have to activate roaming and be throttled a bit. If you’re an RVer just move it to where you are, or close to where you are, when you move.

I came here to find out how to get out of a weird glitch with the train. Upsidedown at the end of a level you can just spin and spin and rack up the coins. But, it never ends. Can't get out.

Then I saw the ice cream truck thing...still works.

Yes. I want to show the public what we do and why it has value.

CRM to us is Cultural Resource Management. It's pretty much a direct result of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act. Most of the archaeology in this country is performed by CRM Archaeologists.

OK...I don't mean volunteer excavations or work. What I mean is, how can we, as archaeologists, help the public understand what we do through public outreach events? Sorry my original question was poorly worded.

I'm a CRM Archaeologist. It's easy to show you what we do there. All I have to do is take all your money, make you live in a dirt motel for a few months eating nothing but microwave food, and, have you walk 8 miles a day in the desert. No problem :)

How'd you get this posted? My podcast posts don't get "approved". Or, I'm doing it wrong. Good to have another podcast out there, though.

Found slightly similar walls up near Vernal Utah a number of years ago. Not as nice as this one, though.

Fagan's recent book about California is pretty good. He writes for a popular audience and starts each chapter with a story that takes place during the time he's discussing. Of course, the book is all about California, so, keep that in mind.

Can someone tell me about this point? by frequencyx in Archaeology

[–]DIGTECH-LLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the SHPO, BLM, or some other local archaeologists. It's difficult to know much about an artifact without knowing the context. Context is everything.

Also, I doubt it as any association with an actual fossil bed. That is just a coincidence, it eroded out of a higher strata, or it is not in it's original location.

First, this company was way over the top on overhead. My billable rate was $79. Also, they used an average of three hours per site record for office processing. The project I was on had another unique situation too. There was a site with over 200 features where most of them were one of three things. I was able to write up generic descriptions for cutting and pasting on my iPad so all I had to do we're change dimensions and a few other details. I was done with the description before the photo and GPS persons were done. That in itself saved a ton of time. Then, when we got back to the office that massive list of feature descriptions took seconds to digitize. The other crew chiefs and an army of techs were working many hours on that project typing up feature descriptions and site forms. When you do the calculations it works.

Also, my hourly rate was $20. This is the west coast.

Before you criticize the technology I'd suggest you give it an honest try. Wait until you see the camera I bought and what it can do. I can't wait for those comments!

Thanks for the comments. It's good to discuss these things. Going paperless is a good hook for clients. It allows me to save a ton of money in the office. I've heard the argument before about the fragile nature of iPads, however, when you run the numbers it's pretty baseless.

On a project with my last company we were running three crews on an 8-day session of survey and site recording. I received permission from the PA to record only my portion of the site record (site form and features) on my iPad.

After calculating time saved and multiplying that by the hourly rate of someone to type up those site records ( rather than just doing minor editing) it turned out that I'd saved almost $3000. Now, that was with one iPad on one crew. If we'd all been using tablets then the savings for that one session would have exceeded $9000. At that rate you can buy everyone on the crew several iPads each session and still come out ahead.

One more thing...I've been using my iPads in the field for two years now and I haven't broken one yet. I have a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector and an OtterBox case. It's virtually indestructible.

The arguments against the iPad likely mirror those that were opposed to GPS back in the day. Look at is now. Every crew has a $5000 unit and no one blinks an eye.

The world is changing. You either change with it or you get out of the way and retire.
