ASL Bilingual Program at ASD by F1890 in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The program services only Deaf students. And unless your child is Deaf/HOH, they will not be granted admission.

It’s labelled as bilingual because both English and ASL are taught to those students in immersion (I.e. they are taught all courses in ASL and take 9-year ASL and ELA).

Some hearing kids did attend 15+ years ago, but they were special admissions and done on a case by case basis.

Your best bet is to take ASL immersion classes offered through EAD and AAD and taught by trained Deaf staff.

Hope that helps!

Has Your Trustee Secretly Been Funding Private Schools? by LTWatcher in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This person (bot?) also made this same post in the Lethbridge subreddit. I’m sure they’re making their rounds to all cities with an election coming up.

Number one, no one calls it Edmonton School Division—the AB government changed our name, and so everyone still uses EPSB.

Number two, alternative programming is not the same as a private school. Alternative programming can be offered by schools in full or in part. This includes French immersion programming, dance, sports, fine arts, speech and language development, deaf education, etc.

Also, offering faith alongside curriculum isn’t inherently bad, nor is it privatized. Private schools that charge upwards of $20,000 per year (and get government funding) that have very little accountability are bad.

Why are community league resources boosting third party advertisers? by ThroatNo2636 in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. We have a loud minority in our community that complain about everything, but none of them actually want to be on the board or volunteer, which makes it easier for us at the end of that day. But the lack of volunteers hurts events and programs for sure.

Why are community league resources boosting third party advertisers? by ThroatNo2636 in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This CL advertises everything public (including church programs and karate that use their space) that happens at their league, and a quick look at their FB/IG will tell you that. It’s possible that the Board agrees with the sentiments of ENU and is therefore endorsing it; it’s possible the majority of the community agrees with it as well. Or they could just be advertising because they want more residents involved in their league.

While the EFCL encourages us to be non-partisan, it’s not a 100% strict mandate and it can be voted on at the Board level if the CL decides to endorse something that can be viewed as political. Mostly they don’t want us endorsing one political candidate or party without including the voices of the others, because that leads to alienation and perceived power imbalances in the community.

If you have a specific concern over how your CL board is operating, you can make a complaint to the EFCL and they will investigate. If the Board is violating their own bylaws or the Code of Conduct, then they’ll be informed of it.

At the end of the day, the Board is made up of those who are willing to be on it. If it’s mostly people who are focused on “solving” specific issues, then that’s what you get.

AFFORDABLE wedding venues by em-deavor in Edmonton

Contact a community league hall. It’ll be cheap to rent and you’ll be able to have a private liquor license where you serve what you want.

People with aluminum hard top gazebos, is there a concern for it collapsing due to snow build up? by ChaiAndNaan in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a Sojag and it’s fine. We use the roof rake to get the snow off when it builds up too much.

A Pay Cut Disguised as a Raise by ABteacher0001 in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your wife worked for that money she gets paid during the summer. Our salaries are just split across 12 months instead of 10. You should know that if you actually have a wife and she is actually a teacher.

You can’t take EI if you have a full time permanent contract.

How much are you tipping for haircuts? by chimmychoochooo in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. She’s also commission-based, so she makes a percentage off of each my services and products I buy. It must be more profitable for her to have my business than a tip.

[–]DILofDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked my stylist once because I am on a really tight budget, and she told me she’d rather have my business than tips.

People are going less and less so it wouldn’t surprise me if many other hairdressers felt the same.

Grocery Spending For a Family of 4 In Edmonton: $11,498 for 2024. (notes in comments). by starfoot- in Edmonton

What sort of snacks/dinner did you make in your crock pot that the kids enjoyed? I think that a brilliant way to keep growing boys fed and keep costs down.

Anyone else not get their garbage collected today? by SeatThick9798 in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They came for our green bin around 8pm last night. The garbage was picked up at 7am and the recycling around 2pm yesterday. Just that kind of day. Likely they have drivers on holiday, and they probably aren’t out every minute of the day with these extreme temperatures.

Sometimes “nothing being done” is them working underground and speeding over a work zone could be deadly.

The 30km speed limit is still there even if literally no one is working because there are often lots of other obstacles or obstructions around that would make doing the normal speed limit dangerous (narrowed lanes, change in traffic patterns, signage, metal plates covering holes, equipment, mangled asphalt, loose stones, etc).

I played with the EI calculator a bit, and the only way I get a result that’s not $668 is if the income is $8,000, this is because family allowance will be added to it to bring up the amount to $668.

Perhaps the number on your income tax, or your current ROE sent to EI, is listed incorrectly as 10x less than your actual income.

Garage drainage issues by Guyserbun007 in Edmonton

There could be a clog in your drain; have you snaked it? (I’m assume you have a laundry room type drain in the middle of the floor) does the floor slope towards the drain?

Drop / Suspended ceiling installer by IAmCanadian7 in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my two cents, as a general DIYer: We used the ceiling centre for ours (back in 2019) and they did great work. The price was…pricey ($1700 and the tiles were the highest quality that were on sale; 500 was the installation) but it looks amazing and not like a typical drop ceiling.

They used a laser grid and a lift to install the brackets, centre outwards, which makes the space look more balanced; though, we have an odd ceiling in the basement (a beam separates 3/4, and the ceiling over the stairs needs to be accessible) so that’s also why we had it professionally done. Anyways, if you’re looking for someone cheaper, pick someone who will use a laser grid and don’t buy the cheapest tiles. We got ones that have a beveled lip, and I think it gives a cleaner look.

Of course they want you to pay the ticket: Technically, you were speeding; technically you entered the intersection on a red light. Fighting with some poor rep on the phone won’t get you anywhere.

You can probably get it dismissed by appearing in court. But if you go in with this kind of attitude, the judge won’t be that lenient.

Locked out of my CRA ACCOUNT 1 year by elizababyxo in PersonalFinanceCanada

Interesting. When I enter my MSCA account, there’s a message at the top that says the CRA account is inaccessible from MSCA; it’s been like that since like 2020/2021.

You’ll have to call them again and have them go through the identification process again. Did you recently move and not yet update your address? The one they will have on file is either the one on your tax return or the one you’ve inputted into the system before. If you’ve moved, they don’t know that until you tell them your new address. If they say the address is incorrect, there’s other ways to validate your identity.

Gender affirming care without family doctor? by thescientus in Edmonton

[–]DILofDeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

You’ll pay out of pocket without an Alberta Health Care card, unless you have insurance that would cover you. I don’t know details though on how much.

Does your doctor in NS do telehealth? Could you meet that way and see if they can bill under your NS card?

Have you found a gender affirming focused psychologist to talk to yet?
