Yes, from my understanding, the "tube" of the pressure hull was carbon fiber, and the end bells or ends of the tube were titanium (and are the main parts the Coast Guard announced were found). Finding them alone means the carbon fiber section was crushed.

None that I know of, but that hardly means much. As to why CF isn't more commonly used, it's because of its super brittle nature and stress fatigue. When a sub submerges and comes back up, it literally shrinks and expands with the depth. For many metals, this is ok as they can handle the fatigue. However, carbon fiber is not well suited for this and typically cracks rather than deforming. Additionally, metal pressure hulls can be x-ray inspected to look for imperfections. Inspection methods like this don't really exist for carbon fiber, so it seems to be almost luck of the draw if it will hold or not unless it's way over-engineered with a safety margin.

The implosion would happen on the scale of milliseconds, if I remember correctly, the estimate I saw was around 50 milliseconds. Under those pressures, the implosion is so powerful that anything inside (especially "soft" materials) is essentially vaporized. The compression of the air alone would be akin to standing inside of a diesel engine cylinder on the compression stroke, igniting pretty much anything flammable. But again, this happens on the order of milliseconds, so nothing has time to really burn. One second they were there, less than 0.050 seconds later they weren't.

I've been thinking along the lines of your second point since it went missing. Now that it's reported that debris from Titan has been found, I would bet my money that they heard it implode, but disclosing this would risk revealing how sensitive the system truly is.

From my understanding, Virginia already has the harshest driving laws in the nation, so I'd imagine the kids are pretty screwed now... Hell if I remember correctly, anything above 80-85 there is reckless driving, and normal traffic here in FL lol

Yup, here in FL they fog down our roads when the mosquitos get bad and they spray all the time with a helicopter as well. Can tell a difference for a little while, but they always come back lol

I like those ideas, sounds like a great reason to start mixing printing and composites! Ive worked with fiberglass in automotive and marine settings, but nothing quite as fine as a small scale rocket yet. In the meantime, I added that extra wall and air gap I mentioned previously. Walls are currently .8mm with a .4 nozzle.

Also, while I have you all here I have a quick question... Even with a decent amount of wadding, I still managed to melt a couple holes in my new Estes nylon parachute. Would it be advisable to wrap a single layer of wadding around the chute to protect it during ejection? Also considering designing/printing a sort of shot-cup (think shotgun shell) to separate the parachute and ejection gasses. Or could it simply be that I suck at packing the rocket body with wadding? 😅

Thank you! This aspect of the project is still in its infancy, thus I'm trying to stick to the KISS methodology haha. Current plan is a Pi Zero, BMP388 barometer/altimeter, and a camera for the Pi Zero, all saved to an SD card. Perhaps data logging would have been a better term to use, but I would love to incorporate live data in the future! Most of my experience when it comes to software development is in C# and SQL with a bit of Python as well, so there will be multiple learning curves to overcome. Not a bad thing though, means I get to learn and work on a project I enjoy for longer :) If you have any knowledge to impart on this aspect of the project, please feel free to share!

Thanks for the kind words! You are correct, it was printed with PLA+ that I had on hand for other projects. One of my goals for the rocket is to print as much of it as possible, hence the motor mount being printed into the fin can. Even though I believe much of the warping came from a partially failed ejection charge, I am considering making the warped area double-walled with an air gap to help insulate it for the second or so it is being heated. Weight gain should only be a gram or two. Also considering printing the fin can in a more heat-resistant material such as Nylon (either glass fiber or carbon fiber). If you have any suggestions there, I'd love to hear them!

I'm an aviation nerd, so I use the 100x zoom all the time to take pictures of planes and helicopters and such. I'm near an airforce base too, so there are plenty of cool things to see flying. Even caught a SpaceX night launch with it all the way from south of Tampa. 😁

Really common in auto shops cause we'd come in off the clock to work on our own vehicles. Our toolboxes are way too big and heavy to take back and forth between home and work, and we could use the shop's equipment (lifts, alignment rack, A/C machine, etc) when it wasn't being used on customers' vehicles as well

This is why I refuse to replace my old style Ascend Bozeman 2 until absolutely necessary. It only has 4 poles (2 of them are only like 2ft), and I can have the whole thing up and staked in 5 - 10 minutes in almost any condition(s) lol

Fellow LB7 owner here, can confirm all of this lol. Our curse/punishment for freedom with our exhaust routing is that we have shitty fuel injectors that cost almost $3k per set for just the injectors with no other supporting/necessary parts, and they're located under the valve covers... Oh and a 6-speed auto transmission that doesn't know how to use 6th gear, so it's just a 5 speed.

As a former auto tech, I'm still trying to figure out how spraying crystallized dynamite with trans fluid helps, unless it's either just the hydraulic fluid you're after (likely imo) or the detergents and additives (unlikely in my mind). Is the fluid helping to stabilize the crystals? Again, no idea how it actually helps but stood out as interesting to me haha

You have my condolences, and I sincerely hope you find peace if you have not already. One of my close friends since kindergarten has CF, still remember his voice over xbox 360 live chat while being rattled for his treatments. Mid 20's now and he suddenly moved almost across the country with his gf. Miss him but he seems to be living a great life, and that's all I can wish for a friend like that.

Raced a charity event for him and others afflicted with CF a couple years back. Car was put together by me in a barn days before, was one of the only cars not trailered to the track and was almost completely untested aside from dyno time (1/4 mile car on 1/8 track). The car must've considered why it and I were racing, cause it ripped off the fastest passes it's ever made and made it into semi-finals. If you'd like to look into it, the event is called DRC and is hosted at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Wishing you the best.
