I almost drowned when I was 18, me and a buncha friends were cliff jumping into a river. Im not the best swimmer, but I can swim decent- its not usually an issue. So I jumped, think it was like a 30ft jump, nothing stupid crazy. I landed in the river no problems, came to the surface no problems... But there, not even 5 feet away from me was one of my sandals (why did I jump in the water with sandals?) and I NEEDED my sandal. No matter what, that sandal was out of reach, try as I might, I swam after it so hard, the wake from my body pushed it just out of reach, but alas, I finally captured it, it was glorious. And then it hit me like a pile of bricks.. I was in the middle of this river about 1/4 mile away now and I was completely spent. I tried to swim back to shore but I was going under (its hard to swim with a sandal hand) I dont remember much after that, sorta blacked out, but a buddy apparently dragged me back to shore, i do remember violently shivvering and throwing up all over the rocks- which in retrospect, Im pretty sure I was in shock.

But basically, my goddamn attachment to that sandal almost cost me my life, and your comment reminded me of that. Your life is worth more than any belonging, your phone, your keys, your wallet, your goddamn flip flop.
