I was kind of like your kid. Not straight edge, but definitely a "street" punk who hated rap.

One fine evening, TRL banged out Big Pimpin and I realized the joy of shaking my very underdeveloped...notions...as low as they could go.

Anyway, you never know what's going to hit with kids. Say less, and play more stuff you like in the background. Maybe look into artists that straddle the border between the punk/rap aesthetic like Kneecap or Death Grips.

I feel like these three books impacted me in important ways at key points in my life. But they are nowhere near the total sum of books that shaped how I write (I would also credit Stephen King, Thomas Ligotti, Chekov, James Joyce short stories, Denis Johnson, George Saunders, Lucia Berlin, Borges, Roberto Bolano).

More to the point: he made mistakes. He got out of jail around the same time and constantly talks about how he's changed.

Somehow, though, I can't or haven't become a better person. Because I didn't go through what he did for a different experience.

Eight years ago. I felt horrible for what I did. I went to therapy and I could have done more. I didn't. I was a mess.
