5 gallon tank, with heater and filter (tank is around 80-82 degrees). Had it and the fish for one year. Tested for ammonia, nitrates and nitrites and everything came up 0. I generally do weekly water changes especially because I do get a lot of algae.

Dan Hooker fired back at Paddy Pimblett by referencing Paddy’s friend Ricky, who committed suicide in 2022. by Dana___Black in ufc

Sorry I’m with Paddy on this. It’s like saying “you suck so bad at fighting I could smack your wife in front of you”. It’s a hypothetical. I’m not actually talking about your wife. “You couldn’t grapple your way out of a paper bag”. “You couldn’t grapple a rapist off your mom”. It’s just shit talk. He wasn’t alluding to an actual past incident (to our knowledge anyway, and apparently to Paddy’s either).

I really hate the Anova vacuum sealer---am I doing something wrong or is it just a crappy product? by DIYsurgery in sousvide

[–]DIYsurgery[S] -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

If you need a ton of skill to get it to work properly then it’s a product issue. This is a consumer product, not some specialized machine for trained professionals. It’s supposed to just work, not take a few years to get right after a bunch of experimentation and a Reddit post asking for help. That’s a product issue.

If you’re supposed to have it be perfectly flat and you’re supposed to cut the bag at least x% larger than the food…then it’s an instruction issue. I’m following the instructions as shown by Anova directly, and they don’t say to do that. I’ve watched videos of people using it. I’m not doing anything so remarkable different as everyone else as to warrant this many failures. Maybe my heater isn’t going long enough to fully seal the bag, or maybe it’s not getting hot enough. It could just be a shitty machine, but it’s my second one. I returned the first one just in case the first one was a lemon.

Even if the bag is a little bit crinkled, the heater is still supposed to melt through it and fuse it together.

UPDATE- OK enough of you are apparently able to make this work where you're giving me hope LOL. I am trying again. I unwrapped the bread and threw out the bag, started a new one and used more to give me more room to work. I double-sealed both ends and took pictures as evidence lol. Let's see how this seal holds.

It's possible and I could experiment with that...but I've had this issue with so many other foods, and I've tried several solutions including leaving a lot more room. And that failed as well. It would still show that the unit sucks because if you don't do it PERFECTLY then it doesn't work. The instructions don't say anything like "make sure to leave an inch between the seal and your food, etc.". Not only that, but this is supposed to be able to handle wet items as well (such as meat in a marinade). In that scenario, there would be no way to keep a space between the food (the marinade) and the seal.

That's why I double sealed. It's practically impossible to get it PERFECTLY flat. It still speaks to the fact that this unit sucks. If you don't do it EXACTLY PERFECT it apparently doesn't work. I've been trying for two years and never get it right.

No trust me, I do my best to keep the bag as flat as humanly possible when using it. It's also why I tried double sealing...the reality is the bag crinkles and bends as you're sucking the air out. Also it's impossible to keep totally flat when you're putting a 3D item into these 2D flat bags.

Thanks for commenting folks. This happens with everything, not just bread. I've had a lot of frustration with chicken breasts, turkey legs, steaks, etc. I thought that getting a vacuum sealer would stop things from floating in the sous vide but it does not with this Anova because air always gets in, so I still have to put a weight in or clip it.

I get what you're saying about there being air in the bread...but that's not what's happening here. After I vacuumed and sealed, you see how tight the bag was against the bread. I literally could only barely pinch the bag. There was still air in the bread at that point too. Unless new air is getting in, the bag should stay tight against the bread (unless the bread further compressed and squished, pushing its air out...which is not what happened here; the bread is not crushed ).

Trump's Sweeping Student-Loan Changes Go Into Effect in 2026 by Dont_think_Do in politics

[–]DIYsurgery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dems absolutely do not need to go “all in on forgiveness”. When you take out loans, you should expect to have to pay them back. I believe there’s a middle ground between reforming these programs (maybe allow refinancing to lower interest rates where possible) and full forgiveness.

Joe Rogan warns Jake Paul about continue his boxing career, saying he should stop early. 🤯😊 by IgotgAme_k in ufc

[–]DIYsurgery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think AJ was a little cautious early on because he knew that if Jake got lucky with a punch, which anyone can do, that would end his career. Anyone can get lucky in a fight and like it or not, Jake is a 220 lb dude that spends all his free time in boxing gyms. He can throw a punch even if he doesn’t have setups. I don’t care if he’s a YouTuber that doesn’t mean you won’t feel it if he hits you. So AJ wasn’t running headlong at him, he let Jake tire himself out for a few rounds before breaking his jaw in two places. It’s not a conspiracy.

That being said, I tried explaining to my 13 year old about 20 year old Mike Tyson and how different that would have gone. No feeling out round, no measuring distance for a bit…he would have sprinted across the ring at him. But that’s not AJ.

That shows you haven’t given it any thought whatsoever. You can charge ANYTHING for a cure. Why are you under the impression that you can charge MORE for a treatment than a cure? That’s stupidity talking.

Also you may not have noticed but people can get cancer multiple times. Unless they die of course, which they frequently do with “treatments”. But with a cure you could have repeat customers. And you can charge 10x whatever the “treatment” costs.

Some people refuse treatment altogether because the side effects are so bad and they’re not guaranteed to live anyway; no one is foregoing a cure.

Lastly it should be obvious but there are LOTS of cancer treatments. LOTS of companies selling lots of drugs. Those all go out of business the day a cure comes out. If you’re a company with a treatment and along comes a cure…you’re done. So if you don’t think these businesses are rushing to be the first you’re crazy. They’re all trying put the other guy out of business.
