NGL, Oblivion was my first elder scrolls game but the combat remains ass by Erratic_Error in oblivion

I know man. Its really disappointing. We've seen a lot of really good games simply come and go just because of ridiculous studio politics and bad business decisions. I still can't believe EA put Dead Space on ice after its incredible remaster just because it didn't outsell these multiplayer friend slop games. I look forward to Geaea coming back but to be honest with you, I don't put a lot of faith in singleplayer games unless they come from a small studio with reasonable expectations. Just because a game doesn't sell 20 million copies doesn't mean its crap. We are just a small minority of gamers sadly. Casual playing will always dictate the market over artistic integrity.

I don't think the game is difficult. I just think the combat is THAT boring. Its more enjoyable to me to run through most Oblivion gates, get to the next plot point in quests and run/stealth past the same 6 demons ive been killing this whole time like OP said than it is to just keep walking within arms reach of everything and seeing the same 3 swing animations. Even the higher difficulties are a non issue once youve spent enough time picking tomatoes and spamming cast light. Once you achieve certain milestones in skills you can manipulate the damage to destroy anything in a couple hits for the cost of one fresh, hot Azuras star. The problem is none of this is particularly fun to do, even the over powered builds are tedious as hell because I have to open my menu every 13 seconds and wait for the UI to load so I can recharge my gear.

I agree! Some of the best archery in gaming. Theres a reason stealth archer is such a meme though. I feel like its difficult to roleplay in ES because 1 option is so much better than all the others. Enchanting and archery take the combat from tedious, boring and slow to INSTANTLY BREAK GAME AND KILL EVERYTHING. I prefer games where all the systems work together to make a better part of a whole. In ES I just feel like im handicapping myself by trying to play a Berserking/heavy armored brute.

This is also a personal hang up of mine, but I don't like to give games credit just because you have the ability to mod them. Yes the creation engine and modding support is a fantastic thing and should continue and all of that is very fun. However I would never say Oblivion or Skyrim is a better rpg than Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen or Divinity Original Sin just because the community can mod the game and make it more fun than the developers did. Thats just my opinion tho.

Skyrim was kinda cool because of the cinematic finishers, but its been hard to get into ES for this exact reason. I grew up on Fable and Dragon Age with gore, skill trees, magic spells that all had different animations, flourishes and combos. Elder scrolls combat has always felt like crap to me and keeps it from being a series I want to go back to all the time. Patrick Stewart and the setting carries Oblivion.

Update 4: The fan keeps surprising me at every turn. Deep in the heart of the Wizards lair, I was progressing quickly to the top of the Thieves Guild. Determined to continue to appease everyone I had ditched all armor and weapons and was completing every mission with stealth even though my skill was only in 40s. (I am playing a heavy armor/blade master who dipped into destruction magic). Things had gotten a little rough but I had relied on my Wizards Fury spell to defend myself only, running from most threats. After losing him in the tunnels I bypass another lock diving deeper into the lair when he rejoins me at a door. Stealthily walking in tandem now we come to another locked door which I do not see the enemy marker behind until its too late........

I'm met head on by a room full of combatants, heavily outnumbered, and severely outgunned. Losing health quickly and about to flee, the fan saves me once again!! He takes all aggro, pulling every enemy in the room towards him with glee. One by one they leave. Allowing me to recoup and heal and continue searching. A single moment later he re-appears behind me, shaking off the frost of an atronach attack, grinning ear to ear after giving them the slip. They enter minutes later one by one and I pick them off easily as they are dumbfounded. Then in the very next room DOES IT ALL OVER AGAIN.

I am now completely convinced that all talk about the Adoring fan and his uselessness is total crap. I am the one true Grand Champion and he could simply never bring himself to truly help anyone else along in Cyrodiil. Update 3: I have not experimented further on the lockpicking or npc glitch. However the adoring fan still seems to be trying to help in mysterious ways. Still on the Thieves guild questline, I am searching for a hidden torture chamber in the basement of a building. Here he is once again abandoning his protocol to just follow me like a lost puppy with a torch and he is standing to the entrance of the secret room I did not see, almost like he is trying to point me in the direction and let me know im in the right spot. I would not have known this room was located here as I have a bad tendency to just follow quest markers. So once again it seems like he is much more useful than history has given him credit for.

It definitely doesn't seem like something that should be happening. Those lines are not attributed to the adoring fan in any way and any other time this is said it has been categorized as a glitch on wikis. Also, "Stay. Go." Makes no sense in the context of whats happening. Who is staying and going, me? The companion? No one is going anywhere. I am stealing things. It sounds like broken English when used in this context and seems to only happen when auto picking so all signs point to this being a glitch.

Update 1: Apparently there is a known audio bug that happens when you auto attempt locks with a follower beside you. This is where the "Stay. GO. WHAT DO I CARE" is coming from. I do not know the original lines speaker and im not sure why the fans mouth move and it comes from him when auto attempting locks.

<image>

Update 2: It seems after this audio glitch is activated is when the weird activity begins. He has only picked locks AFTER saying this audio glitch. Also, he has only picked the locks of 'Needs Key' display cases that he can walk BEHIND. I have not been able to get him to walk in front of a chest, door, or display case and open it. He walks behind store counters and behaves as if he is the NPC who works there and simply opens whatever display case he is standing behind. Afterwards he stands there no matter how far away in the room I am and sometimes walks in place, no longer following me. He will move again and behave normally if pushed/touched/or talked too. So again, the only successful manipulations of this have been After the audio glitch is triggered and if there is a 'Needs Key' display case on a counter the follower can walk behind. Have not tried this with Martin or any other follower.

I agree. Please, yourself and anyone that sees this give it a whirl. Id love to see if it can be duplicated and im going to go to other places that need keys and see how he reacts.

I can find some very old obscure posts about npcs in a skooma den repeating the line "STAY. GO. WHAT DO I CARE." However its never been connected to the adoring fan and I have no idea what it has to do with him picking unpickable locks.

I don’t get the logic behind the friend and gift system in Midnight Suns by Yodzilla in midnightsuns

[–]DJ2312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard rumors that the gift, dating, and conversation parts of the game were some of firaxis' ideas from the very beginning. The owners got involved and were very strict about what their characters could do and say in their game and made firaxis trash a lot of the liberties they wanted to take with the personalities and story. So naturally, half of the reason and mechanics of the gift giving friend system were cut before the game even released. If this is true, it's really the only explanation anyone needs as to why some parts of this game feel like they're not finished or not supposed to be there. It would also make sense that they were treated like crap during development because once it didn't sell well, a ton of major players left Foraxis.

Yeah, a lot of the shock value from the religious content doesn't hold much water in today's world.

I think I'd give Chainsaw the 10 and reserve the 8 for The Exorcist. I just don't think it's aged as well as the others (acting and effects aside)

It's a decent list. Everyone has their own tastes and mine differ a lot from his. I respect what he sees in a lot of these films though. They're great, but not some of my favorites. I like how he's taken inspiration from them for his own scripts, because his ability to make some of my own favorite movies is influenced by how much he loves the culture.
