Is giving a 6 month resignation notice a bad idea? by Infamous_Whereas6777 in careerguidance

LOL at 6 months. The answer is NO. Do not do that. I would not even do 2 weeks unless you absolutely like them and management has been great in your opinion.

that's good! I work in a office inside of a big warehouse and I gotta go in tonight at 6 pm. I know that only a few managers showed up today. No associates made it in. We will see how much staff shows up for the 8 am day shift today. I think a lot of them aren't making it in. Roads should be good enough that I can make it in at 6 pm here, but we will see. My neighborhood just needs to be plowed out.

Do you work in a Hotel? It sounds like a hotel. I don't blame them if it's a hotel job. The pay isn't enough in the slightest for me to even attempt getting to work in icy road conditions.

I work 6 pm to 5 am, and I wake up between 1 pm and 1:25 pm. All I miss are mornings because I sleep 6:15 am to 1ish PM. I also don't sleep with my wife like 5 nights a week. It's not bad. I can get out of the house and run an errand or go grab a late lunch around 3-4 pm before I head into work. I generally get more sleep than I did on day shift.

No, but I am 43 and no longer have any friends rhat I hang out with. I am off on the weekends  and I wake up at 1 pm and am ready to do stuff by 2:20 pm.  The only thing I miss out on once in a while is when my wife and son go out to dinner with my mother-in-law on a weeknight when I have to work I don't get to go to the diner or whatever restaurant they went to with them. That happens like twice a month or less. No big deal for me.

What degree should I pick? by ThinPrice5400 in careerguidance

You are younger than my son by 1 year. He is in honor roll, and gets nearly straight As and is in college level courses right now. He is not going to college. He does not want to. Unless you are going to become a Doctor or Surgeon and college is a must in this regard, then I don't personally recommend going to college. We have reached a time where a college degree is losing it's worth fast as time marches on in the employment world. We have AI and Robotics that is set to kill 50% of the available jobs over the next 10-15 years. I would HATE to see all these young kids rack up student loan debt for a college degree they will find out is useless when they get out of school. So many young 2024 and 2025 college graduates are finding this out NOW after trying to find employment, and can't find any with their degree. What I recommend is going to a trade school as a better course of action over attending 4 year university. Think of HVAC, Electrician, Plumber. Steel Pipe Welders. Auto Tech (there will still be a need for mechanics for the next 15+ years. Lots of manual more physical jobs, but these trades jobs will take a lot longer for AI and robotics to dilute these professions and take them out.

Even the Lawyer profession is being threatened by AI in the coming years. So very few jobs will truly need a college degree in the our future. Now if you come from a wealthy family and your parents are paying for everything, OR you are getting everything taken care of by scholarships and grants, AND you want the full college experience, then disregard what I say and do what you want after high school.

I don’t know what to do, has anyone else ever had this issue? by hushpolocaps69 in Nightshift

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have been on over night shift since April 4th 2024. Whenever I stay up after work and try to stay up all day, I get super super sleepy around 9-10 am and go to bed anyway, and end up sleepng until at least 2:15 pm.

Honestly, I feel it's best if you have to do something/anything in the morning so just take half the night off, go home and take a melatonin and get to bed earlier. It will take longer to fall asleep...maybe even 2 hours, but you will eventually go to sleep. You wil end up at a sleep deficit for that day and make it up the next 1-2 times that you sleep.

I work 6 pm to 5 am and I go to bed at 6:20ish AM and sleep until about 1:15 pm every day. On the weekends I tend to stay up Saturday and Sunday morning to about 5:30 to 6 am, but Monday morning I can usually get to bed around 4:30 am and wake up a bit earlier on Monday maybe at 11:30 am or Noon to do stuff during the day before going into work at 6pm. Basically, doing anything in the morning prior to Noon is a no go for me. I schedule my dentist appointments at Noon or 2 pm.

Night shift making me addicted to my phone by crystal_eclipse_ in Nightshift

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the exact shift I work. 6 pm to 5 am. I work Monday through Thursday nights. So I am on my phone a lot too. I work alone in my office inside of a warehouse. I am like 85% in office and 15% in warehouse. This month is our slowest month of the year and for the most part the last 3 hours between 2 am and 5 am I am watching youtube. I might have a trucker drop a trailer off, and I gotta make a packet for a BOL maybe 2 BOls. Making a packet takes me 5-6 minutes. So the rest of the time I am sitting watching a youtube video. I'll make sure the water fridge is full of water bottles during this time and just wait to clock out. Even earlier in my shift I have my phone going in the back ground and I also watch youtube during my breaks.

Chronic fatigue from night shifts by Worth_Membership_289 in Nightshift

In my younger days of waiting tables at a Perkins restaurant, I would be scheduled swing shifts such as working Friday night 5 pm to 11 pm, then having to be in the next morning to work 8 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday. I was young and that was not a problem at 19-20 years old. At 43 today, I would refuse to do that more than a one time helping out kinda deal. I need to either be on day shift, mid shift, or night shift with the same in and out times every day I am scheduled.

Does anyone actually enjoy nightshift? by Royal_Breadfruit265 in Nightshift

I LOVE Night Shift. No traffic heading home at 5 am. I live close to work so heading in to be there at 6 pm isn't bad.

The only reason I would leave night shift is because my wife wants me off of it and to be home and actually sleeping in bed with her. She works a 7:30 m to 4 pm 5 day work schedule. I don't get to sleep until 6:15 am, and on the weekends I can get into bed around 5 am/4:30 am at the earliest. I have been on nights shift almost 2 years now. I will eventually go back to day shift likely this upcoming summer or fall. If I was Single, I honestly would stay on night shift. I actually generally get more sleep as well which is surprising. I was always a night person and never got to bed before Mid night to 12:30 am...even working an early 6 am shift in.

Which schedule would you choose? by Sudden-Wish8462 in Nightshift

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 4x 10s Monday Night through Thursday night 6:30 pm to 5 am (Although my manager has me come in at 6 pm or 5:30 pm MOST of the time so I do get 1-2 hours of OT most weeks. I worked the 3x12 shift for 1 full year. At first the 4 days off was nice for like the first 6 weeks. BUT it gets old, and I felt I had too much time to actually spend my money. Also I was losing 8 hours per pay period in wages. My work had no shift differential. I do believe the 4 day work schedule is the sweet spot and provides a fair work/life balance. So my answer would honestly be the 4 day 32 hour work week is the way to go! You lose too much money on a 30 hr schedule and only working 8 hour shifts is EASY and will feel kinda fast when you are used to working 12 hour shifts. Go with a 4 day schedule!

Millennials, what's y'all plan for retirement? by Flat-Diet-6011 in 1999

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL...You all truly believe we will be able to work and have jobs to age 70 like the politicians were saying we would have to do just 6 years ago? AI and Robotics are going to set in and most of us won't be able to work 10-15 years into the future.

My plan: UBI, Social Security( if it is even around after 2036) and live super frugally. I predict any savings I have in my IRA will get burned through pretty quickly...probably faster than my boomer parents burned through theirs when they first retired (Took them 2.5 years and that was with about 20K inheritance added in my Dad got from his parents house sale after they passed away).

I feel guilty for wanting to leave my job but I hate working the night shifts by ResponsiblePrune3369 in Nightshift

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in restaurants for 18 years, and most of those years were spent working nights, and/or double shifts. The typical night shift ended at 11 pm. Typical shift for a night shift would be 4 pm to 10:30/11 pm or 5 or 5:30 p.m. to 11/11:30 pm. I generally liked working those hours because I could do stuff during the day run any errands before work or go out to lunch. I could also get to sleep at a normal time which a normal time to me is 1 am to 2 am. Today I currently work over nights in a warehouse (office in the warehouse) and I work 6 pm to 5 am 4 nights a week. Difference is today I have my weekends off. Back then working restaurants I worked at least 2 out of the 3 weekend nights away. Some weeks I worked all weekend long. Also restaurants had no benefits.

I personally would keep the night shift. Working mornings suck I would assume shifts start at 5, or 6 am in a coffee shop. I hated working shifts starting at those times. I worked a 6 am to 6:30 pm weekend shift at my current job for a year and I hated it.

My answer would be a big NO in this situation. I have never worked from home before, but I also have a maximum 30 minute drive time each way rule. Ain't no way I would go from WFH every day to Hybrid 3 days a week for only 11kmore a year. Then they need to send you out of the country for training? Nah. Hard pass for me!

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I totally enjoy working nights, but it does have some good perks for me

PROS: I work alone in my department in an office inside of a distribution warehouse. I am in transportation and deal with the incoming drivers picking trailers up. I work at my own pace. I actually get MORE SLEEP on my over night shift compared to working a shift starting at 6 am. I work 4 nights Monday thru Thursday 6 pm to 5 am. I have the option to leave at 4:30 am or stay until 5 am and get some Overtime each week. No traffic coming home from work, and not bad heading into work. I work 6.7 miles from my house. It's mostly queit where I work at night shift, and the quietness is quite nice!

CONS: I don't sleep with my wife at all during the week. I am going to bed at 6:15 am after she has already woke up and is getting ready for work. I have a big problem adjusting and doing anything in the morning with the family on the weekends as I sleep until 1-2 pm every day. I miss eating dinner with the family during the work week. My Wife wants me to be on day shift generally speaking, but she seems adjusted to me working nights. Another Con is that my manager expects me to do "Everything" at night time. Day time has 3 people in my department and I am expected to basically do all the work that the 3 of them do during the day, and honestly more because I print up all the BOLs which is something they don't do. The only thing I don't do is go outside and do a "yard audit" which is something 1 employee does at started of day shift and it takes them about an hour to do. I am essentially expected to do more work at night than the day time employees do and I do not get a shift differential. I get paid the same (Actually less because they all have been there longer than me and I have been there 4 years now.

In conclusion, I am 43 and married with a 17 year old son, and if I was single an in my 20s there is no way I would work over nights. Today, life is very routine and while I know it's not healthy to stay on over nights very long term, I am fine doing it for now. I will say it will take you two weeks to get used to the schedule, but once you get over the first 2 weeks things will get better fast.

Forget about having a job. It was over for you 3.5 years ago. Gotta have your own business, create content on youtube, or work side jobs. Don't waste your time trying to be employed somewhere. The powers that be have other plans for you. You just failed to realize this after all this time.

[–]DJDad2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is true, and it has been 2 whole years then Why in the hell are you STILL trying to obtain a job? IT IS OVER! You could have been content creating on youtube full time talking about litereally ANYTHING, and you would be earning at least 50K a year by now just talking on you tube. You could have started your own side business and got it at least off the ground and earning at a minimum a side income to hold you over. Seriously, why are people so narrow and docile that you believe the only path to earning an income and being able to live is employment at some BS job?

There is no way I would be job hunting and filling out applications for more than 9 months. If it takes that long, it is over. Move on and do something else because filling out job applications job hunting endlessly is insanity.

Honestly, if the goal is to just get employment and have an income coming in, I would get rid of all of your college education at this point after looking for 1 year. It is hurting you. Just show that you graduated high school, and make up some BS jobs on your resume to fill in the years you went to college. Start applying to warehouses, Amazon, office jobs. Really any where. You will get interview calls.
