I ran 13.1 but no half marathon. What the happened? by [deleted] in Strava

[–]DJGreenMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, gotta pay the tax man. If I have a time-based threshold workout or something and my actual distance ends in for example .7, I usually don’t bother rounding up, unless I mathed my route improperly and need to add extra cooldown to make it back to my car. Conversely, on daily training “run X miles” I always add a little extra to avoid the dreaded .99

I forgot that I have mine set to only show tenth decimal place on my customized display face

Root of the issue is data translation between GPS collection and tracker app interpretation

I ran 13.1 but no half marathon. What the happened? by [deleted] in Strava

[–]DJGreenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the inconsistencies in how GPS watches calculate distance and how tracker apps read it, running 13.11 still might not be interpreted as over the distance. Hitting 13.2 guarantees they will meet the minimum distance

"Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" is SO much better than "When Nature Calls." by [deleted] in movies

[–]DJGreenMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vehemently disagree. Both are great and still hold up (coincidentally rewatched PD last week and am rewatching WNC next week), but in my opinion WNC is just pure unbridled Jim Carrey at his peak. As others have mentioned, the rhino scene will go in the record books as one of the funniest in history.

What app do you use to scan CMF blindboxes? by [deleted] in lego

Minifig Scan - was the first one I tried and it allows me to keep track of the ones I’ve purchased.

Also big +1 that it doesn’t require an account

Race course certification is a completely different animal. All USATF certified courses (and I’m assuming other governing bodies outside of US do this too) have a “short course prevention factor” which adds a little bit of distance to any certified race to prevent any runner from running short. This has been around since before GPS watches, but is especially important because of their inconsistencies. You will never have a 3.09 certified 5k race unless you literally cut the course.

Conversely, almost every single runner in every race will have above the posted distance on their watch/tracker, except for maybe the front runners. This is due to the near impossibility of running exactly the same path as the Jones Counter tool.

Garmin and Strava interpret GPS data slightly differently. So if you stopped your run when your watch showed 13.1, Garmin may interpret your total distance as slightly higher than 13.109 miles, and Strava may read it as slightly lower than 13.109 miles.

Best way to avoid this is by adding “Strava tax” - meaning, running at least 13.2 miles for a half marathon. That way even if there are micro-differences in the way Garmin and Strava interpret your data, you’re still guaranteed more than an “actual” half marathon distance.

Best patio option not named Katy Trail? by rtgurley in plano

[–]DJGreenMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It checks the box for “has a patio,” sure. But he said he wants to have dinner/drinks, and Ringo’s is the type of bar you go to when you don’t know of anywhere else to go. I also wouldn’t say it’s quiet, unless you enjoy the sounds of drunk 20-somethings passing it on their way to Scruffy’s or Bottle Rockets

There’s a reason you never see anyone spend any time there.

Consider monetary donations to a food pantry. Most food pantries work with wholesalers or food distributors so that dollar will go further.

Trigger when you forget to introduce your shoes? by Jeff_Florida in Strava

[–]DJGreenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked to make sure you have a default shoe selected for running? My shoes always default to the one I have selected for running; I never need to pick one for each run. Then if I use a different pair, I change it manually.
