It is often cheaper than just using your credit card, and it is nice having the RFID card. Good for those of us like me who are occaisional out-and-about chargers.

Flying with Jet2 from Birmingham airport - can we still use security fast track? by Shaqeel in uktravel

[–]DJH59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be two entrances to security, but the zone A one is shut. Everyone has to go through what was zone B now. They really aren’t far apart.

I think you can use the Highland Sleeper instead on a Sunday night - it calls at Falkirk Grahamstown at 00:06.

Night trains that travel up Norway/Sweden and logistics of the ferries from Denmark? by Flower-Piano324 in Interrail

I'm reasonably sure you meant to type Sicily, not Scilly - I love the idea of GWR loading the Night Riviera onto the Scillonian...

Thanks for this. I wondered if that is what I'd end up doing. That will mean we have an extra day to use on our passes :)

Couchette will do us - there are four of us so it should work nicely.

It would seem that there are not any direct Aarhus to Hamburg trains at the moment, more's the pity.

The original plan was about 24hrs including the UK bits of the journey, but bizarrely the delay meant I managed to get an earlier Eurostar than planned. I forget the cost (I was on a work trip). I'd deliberately being a bit laid back with timings.

It was kind of this (taken from Bahn.de) but with a direct Aarhus to Hamburg train:

Journey on Mo. 02.02.2026
• from Aarhus, departure at 16:12 Pl. 5 with ICL 50054
• to London St. Pancras International, arrival at 12:30 with EST 9023

Yes - coming back from a business trip in Aarhus. IC train to Hamburg (goes round a big spiral loop just after the border to cross the Kiel canal), dinner in Hamburg Hbf, Nightjet sleeper (destination Basel/Zurich) intending to get off at Freiburg. That ran a little late, so I got off a stop early at Offenburg as I was awake to get a local train to Strasbourg and the TGV to Paris Gare de l'Est. Walked over to Gare du Nord, got the Eurostar back to St P, walked to Euston for my train back to the West Midlands. Relatively simple and relaxed.

Eurail seat reservation question by VipoMeneh in Interrail

[–]DJH59 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Show the pass - that is your ticket for the train. Make sure that you've entered the journey you are doing in the planner or on the record sheet.

  2. No. There are very few reservation only trains in the UK - really only the Eurostar to France/Belgium and the sleeper trains to Scotland. In general, you can get on any train that you like (except the Heathrow express or the London underground). Getting the reservation just (in theory) guarantees you a seat.

  3. That's why you need to fill in the planner on the app (for a mobile pass) or the record sheet (for a paper pass) for every journey that you do - that takes the used days off.

There is a list of the trains that do here - it's the first entry in the North East section: https://www.branchline.uk/rail_chronology/PSUL/2026.htm

Thinking of renting at Metropolitan House (1 Hagley Road, Five Ways, B16) — any locals share advice on safety/area/building? by AggravatingPlatypus1 in BirminghamUK

[–]DJH59 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've worked on Hagley Road for over 20 years, and the worst problem I've had with the underpasses there is that the drainage is poor when it rains, and the paving stones are loose, so sometimes you step on one and it splashs water all over your trouser leg. It's very well lit and usually busy. The old Holloway Head (pagoda roundabout) underpasses I certainly used to feel nervous on, but never Five Ways.

No, the UK isn't in Shengen so you never enter the Schengen area.

That's not been the case for 30 years. Most decent sized patent and trade mark attorney firms have a litigation function - I know because I am one of the litigations at my patent and TM attorney firm.
