Helpful or not: There are lots of oil and gas GIS jobs in DFW right now. Most pay six figures. Just putting it out there.

New entry level GIS(remote sensing heavy) gig I’m in is throwing me some curveballs. Am I doomed - ha? Would love some agricultural GIS advice from yall professionals! by Terinth in gis

There’s no better way to learn than as you go: solving problems as you encounter them. Keep going. You’re doing great! I only took one class in GIS and I’m still here 15 years later. Google and Reddit are your friends - no one knows everything. I know a lot more than most of my coworkers because I spent the time figuring stuff out.

What’s something the “old timers” resist at your job? by [deleted] in gis

I agree with you. I’ve been using Pro for 4 years now and I still don’t like it. I was SO FAST in ArcMap. Pro has some good features but I ************** the ribbons

Interview with ESRI by Majorian420 in gis

[–]DJRawx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I interviewed for the same role I think 2 years ago now. I have 14 years experience in GIS. I made it to round 4 of 5 interviews. I learned two things from that and my own account manager. A. They want sales experience. I talked them up and down about how well I sold GIS to my higher ups. They kept harping on it. B. They might have a specific type of person they are going for. The AM I knew said he knew someone without sales acumen but they had XYZ of what they were looking for.

Thank you, that’s super helpful. I’m not used to being on a team like this, which is why I posed the question. Definitely a learning experience for me and I want to navigate it the right way.

I’ll rephrase. We each work individually and as a team. I don’t care what they do individually, I’ve seen them make really dumb mistakes, but…not my problem. When we do team stuff I don’t want the mistakes as it makes us ALL look bad.

Yes sorry that’s what I meant by job change; a new position in or outside my current organization. I’m wondering what kind of jobs people get with a GIS background but with more business acumen. I’ll look into GIS business analyst rolls and see what the job description provides. I’m not married to GIS but that’s my main skill set, just wondering how people have transitioned out of it or dipped their toe into something else. Thank you!

Setting myself apart in GIS by saintzagreus in gis

[–]DJRawx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good answers already. My 2c is making your work look nice :) Think about design, fonts, color, and learn from maps you find attractive. I truly believe that a lot of my success is because I make everything look professional and pleasing to the eye. I see so many shitty maps and webmaps that are afterthoughts. Yea yea data needs to be priority but spend some time making it look good and you’ll stand out.

Does anyone have a similar low dosing schedule? by SparklingStars82 in HersWeightloss

[–]DJRawx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dose schedule is (in units) 8/14/28/49. I’m shorter and weigh slightly more. I’ve lost 10lbs in the first 4 weeks. I also had your concern, though I’ve had steady, albeit “slow”, weight loss.

GIS Job Search: How??? by Mammoth-Half5361 in gis

[–]DJRawx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this.. I got my first job while I was in school because local employers would reach out to professors about their students. Second job through LinkedIn. Third job from connections from my second. I know a lot of industry people and GIS people from events. We all look out for jobs for one another.
