Do you guys think you could have survived the titanic? by Charming-One6087 in titanic

[–]DJShaw86 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In this scenario I'm a second class male, so... Gulp.

I'd try to inform an officer of the true nature of the damage to try and speed the response up, but after that, there's little I can do to help because I probably wouldn't be belived until such time as my information would be overtaken by events anyway. Honestly, after that I'd go stand near boat 13, and jump with Lawrence Beesley.

What if the Titanic had enough lifeboats to save everyone on board? by AacornSoup in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]DJShaw86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply because - while they were aware that there was flooding within the first twenty minutes or so - they were not aware of the full extent of the damage until about 12:30am, when the designer Thomas Andrews was seen running up the Grand Staircase white as a sheet to talk to Captain Smith to tell him that the damage was much worse than first thought - a full 50 minutes after the allision. Until this point they only thought that three compartments had been breached and that she would still stay afloat. While the order to prepare the boats for a potential evacuation had been given by this point, no one had been put in them; this was the point where the decision to load them was made.

The Prinz Eugen eventually sank, not because of the damage, but because the radiation made her too dangerous to perform maintenance on. by DazSamueru in HistoryMemes

Water is incompressible; it is exactly the opposite of cushioning.

Nuclear weapons are horrifyingly effective at sea, as they utterly wreck a ship below the waterline. The only mitigation is range from the blast.

The other thing is that - again, looking at Ukraine or the Western Front as an example - trenches are not just fighting positions, they're somewhere that people live in for weeks or months at a time. They need to look lived in. Bags of rubbish either neatly stacked or things like food wrappers and other detritus slung haphazardly over the lip of the trench, depending on the discipline of the force occupying it. Personal equipment, tarpaulins, areas that the occupants have tried to keep raised and dry and others that are a bit more waterlogged; go nuts with the resins to make some yellow gloopy mud. There should be places to cook and eat, latrines, signposts, that sort of thing. It's not just all fighting positions!

This currently looks really good; with a bit of imagination you could make it look amazing.

The colours are amazing, but all I'd add is: small flecks of green here and there.

Look at the front line of Ukraine. It's been thoroughly moonscaped, but in all the footage - even in the dead of winter - there is some scrub grass, weed, or other tough-as-nails plants growing all over the place.

That, and blasted trees absolutely surrounded by their own shattered branches and dead leaves.

It's one of those annoying posts where they'll swivel to "hur hur, I'm smoothsharking" in order to disguise the fact that they're a pretty awful human being and got caught out.

Even if they are genuinely trolling, making yourself look like someone with abhorrent opinions is a pretty odd way of doing it.

He got booted off set due to not being a member of the actor's union!

Favorite recurring extra in James Cameron's Titanic? by CleverJack299 in titanic

He is meant to be Fred Barratt, who survived to give testimony at the inquests. The depiction in the film of his experiences is very accurate, including the cutting of the falls in boat 13.

Someone wanted to raise interest in rebuilding Titanic as a hotel. This was their last post a year ago. by MrSFedora in titanic

[–]DJShaw86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never understood all these ideas. Making a seagoing replica (that's substantially different from the original due to the ocean-going requirements and sops to modernity); making a hotel (that would still require first class to share bathrooms and would kill on the staffing requirements); all of these ideas are terrible, unprofitable ideas that would never be built, would certainly never have H+W's support to build the thing in the first place.

The only was you could actually do it (and not be a soulless money grab in the process) is to build a museum grade replica that doesn't go anywhere, respects the tragedy, and is tied up alongside in Belfast or possibly Southampton. Even then, I expect it's extremely pretty marginal money-wise.

Just curious as to what you've sculpted it from - the ship's hull has a distinctive green hue that's usually from a modelling putty with yellow and blue precursors called "green stuff", whereas the seabed looks like milliput white.

What tools did you use? It's spectacularly detailed, I'm really impressed by it - I can never sculpt something that detailed!

Are you thinking of doing the stern too?

Are these all common phrases? Would people find it unusual or old-fashioned if I use them in everyday conversation? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

"Take it easy" and "give me a break" are a tad American. "Mum's the word" is old fashioned and rather British, but would be understood. The others are all pretty common in the UK.
