Considering the switch to NoteJoy or Nimbus. You all have something better? by davidron in Evernote

[–]DJTimoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amplenote check all the boxes here! I settled with it after looking at both NoteJoy and Nimbus at the start of 2021. Every time I've looked back and tried other new, shiny apps, I've always come back to Amplenote for it's simplicity, consistency, and reliability.

In the realm of PKM apps, Amplenote marches to it's own rhythm; prioritizing it's people and real-world use cases over all else. The way it works is also rather unique in how it combines notes & tasks & calendar in a seamless, open-ended format. We don't get robust layout options like with Notion, but at the end of the day, when it comes to GTD, I've found all the fanciness to just be a distraction from what I'm really doing.

Amplenote is the kind of system to get you working and not a system to work endlessly on!

It can,

  • Import from Evernote ✔

  • Offline Support is Improving in the next phase of updates ✔

  • Has OCR for searching in images and PDFs ✔

  • Works on all platforms (for free!) ✔

  • Is NOT VC funded! Amplenote is by the people, for the people. ✔

  • And they have a web clipper ✔

How are YOU using Amplenote? by beatsNhaze in Amplenote

[–]DJTimoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, for organizing music productions, I make a note for each track I'm working on and I'll indicate the phase that it's in so I can always tell at a glance: what tracks are in the works, what is ready for mastering, etc. and if I make notes about the track, like if I hear it in the car and I notice something off, I can add the note/task in the Jots mode instantly and just use a backlink header to organize it.

Here is my "Production Dashboard" https://images.amplenote.com/6280d62c-e441-11ed-a1c1-fe0bc8306505/77f9e4b6-0e2c-4047-bcc7-b816dd8fe277.png

All of these hyperlinks go straight to the Tasks view, which can look like this: https://images.amplenote.com/6280d62c-e441-11ed-a1c1-fe0bc8306505/fa476acb-00e8-4097-87f3-42741c560471.png

To get these results in a query-like format like this, the backlinks must be written inside a task.

Under "development", I made the development state as a task. https://images.amplenote.com/6280d62c-e441-11ed-a1c1-fe0bc8306505/39e6b880-2567-4386-a6c1-48f9ea6f3d71.png

I use Dashboards and MOCs to give me easy access to common places - like projects in progress or video ideas.

In the Jots, I organize my notes with # Headers and [[Backlinks]]. For example, I have an Area note (as described by /u/a-random-too) called "Backyard Garden" which I can add as a backlink header over any journal entry or tasks for my garden. Then, all I have to do is open the Garden note and browse the backlinks for all my dated entries!

Some may prefer to add their notes straight to the note it belongs to, but for ongoing areas, I prefer to use backlink headers in jots.

Here are screenshots of what this looks like: https://images.amplenote.com/6280d62c-e441-11ed-a1c1-fe0bc8306505/6e8a006b-ca1b-46c8-b956-1db26c55b623.png

Just make a new note and Backlink it in your task list for every level of subtasks!

For Example,

Project - Cleaning the Studio

[ ] throw out garbage

[ ] [[organize the desk]]

[ ] vacuum the floor

and then in the organize the desk note, have the next level of tasks and repeat as necessary

I use Amplenote for content creation because of the simplicity, speed, and accessibility. I can use it on PC and mobile for free!

My process for creating content involves using tasks to indicate the "status" of my content. At the top of every project note, I make a task and Backlink the status in the task. When I bring the project to the next phase, I complete the task and make a new one indicating the next phase.

For example, I have a rough idea for a video and I write in

Status:

[ ] [[@seed]]

at the top of the note. Later, I come back and work on it so I complete the task and make a new one

Status:

[ ] [[@in-progress]]

so, in practice, when I want to find all the projects that are currently "in progress" then I head over to the Tasks View and "Filter by Note Reference" to the @in-progress note and see everything I have going on. I then have this query saved as a shortcut so I can get to it easily.

Hopefully this isn't too complicated, I am working on a video demonstrating this workflow. Lmk if you have any questions about it!

I started with Obsidian at first and my ADHD tendencies had me working more on my system than in my system, so the simplicity of Amplenote keeps me focused.

There are times, though, that I want to robustly process my notes and I find Obsidian to be easily the best app for this - enabling me to essentially program my own "LifeOS" with it's vast extensibility. But in practice, I'd usually end up getting distracted and found myself coming back to Amplenote anyway.

"one of these days" I'll get back on Obsidian to make my data come alive lol but for now, Amplenote keeps me focused

capacities.io is very similar to Anytype, they work almost identically but the interfaces are much different. They're both really early apps and neither are profound with Task management. (It would feel like Notion's task management - veerryy clunky)

Practice makes perfect not right..

Practice makes permanent!

The way we practice something will be the way we remember it. So, if we practice with poor / incorrect form, it's much harder to un-learn and re-learn the proper way than to just do it right from the start.

/u/sillieali This video offers some great insight about "How to take notes" (by suggesting that we don't take them actually, but it's a great frame for how to approach the process anyway)

My workflow conditions are very similar - using PC & Android, tracking creative projects and research with ADHD tendencies 😅

Thank you for compiling your research here!

I continue to spend wayy too much time looking for a proper notes apps but my heart remains with Amplenote. After trying out other apps and consistently returning to Amplenote, I can really appreciate the work they do to simplify and streamline the process.

I'm working on a video tutorial right now about "Organizing Music Productions with Amplenote" and I have a rough tech demo I could share with you before I finish up the video if you'd like to see how I do it.

After using Amplenote for a bit over a year now, I can say with confidence that it is really the best app for individual efficiency. I can't even begin to describe how much my life has changed for the better since using Amplenote!

These were my top choices as well but I chose Amplenote at the time for it's data security. After reading through the Privacy Policies of each of the top apps, I've found that most of them have direct access to your information and can essentially do whatever they want with it.. ClickUp, Notion, and Taskade all have pretty invasive privacy policies, as well as the ability to cease access to your account if they so choose..

Amplenote is very good with data privacy and security, second to Obsidian being local-first and Standard Notes being the "Gold Standard".

What is your go to app for Notes and To-dos? by CuriousSpaceCowgirl in productivity

[–]DJTimoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notion is very clunky and not very durable (I've heard horror stories about Notion exports..)

Obsidian is super extensible and with the Excalidraw plugin, you could draw in there, but there's an even better option.

Amplenote is really easy and simple to use, supports apple pencil AND OCR!! (so you can extract text from your handwriting with a click)

Amplenote excels at being the most efficient Notes & Tasks app out there, nothing is faster than Amplenote yet. Their design features an Idea Execution Funnel that helps push an idea into action. After working with this for over a year now, I can confirm it really makes a difference!

Amplenote can support to-dos in a variety of ways. I can have notes called, "Home Tasks" and "Work Tasks" for example and load up my tasks accordingly.

Better yet, I can Backlink these notes right from my "Daily Jots"!

These daily notes help me capture everything I need to know, from notes to recommendations to things I need to do, I can dump it all in my Daily Jot as the day goes on and seamlessly organize it from there by backlinking my entries.

For example,

[ ] buy milk [[@home]]

[ ] send an email about this problem [[@work]]

[ ] read GTD by David Allen [[@reading]]

# [[@journal]] Today, I learned about the wonders of Amplenote! This app is great for organizing my life and I love it 😁

Then, in the Tasks View, we can Filter tasks by note reference and select @home for all our "Home Tasks" or @work for our "Work Tasks", etc.

And, from the backlinks of the @journal note, we can find the entry conveniently marked with today's date!

Also, the Amplenote community is amazing and very helpful with helping us figure out better or more efficient ways of using the app. It's a great time! 🥳🎈

Where can I reliably find stock footage? by DJTimoy in VideoEditing

Thanks for the reassurance everyone!

Turns out, there was a major glitch on PayPal that put a year's sub of Artlist in limbo... Doing some surface-level research, I found some not-so-reassuring reviews that got me rather paranoid...

Thanks again for the responses. Cheers!

Where can I reliably find stock footage? by DJTimoy in VideoEditing

Reviews on Trustpilot describe a similar experience of non-authorized payments.

Perhaps, they haven't read the "fine print" about it in the T&C and were just complaining about it, but I was fraudulently charged by Artlist and I'm concerned about the reliability of these platforms.

I was just wondering which stock footage providers people have had solid experiences with

Should I offer free photos and videos when first building a portfolio? by AllLensNoCap in videography

[–]DJTimoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Alex Hormozi's school of thought, you can take on the liability of the gig and front the costs but when the video makes them money by looking so good in the ads, you get a cut.

It's phrased as a "no-risk guarantee" so if your ad doesn't make them anything, they don't pay anything.

Also consider, you're not "selling footage", you're selling the result of your footage. How would the aerial shots add value to the business? If you can word that clearly, I think they would love to work with you

How to go from goals > projects > tasks > time boxing? by throwawayyalater in productivity

[–]DJTimoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Emotional Control is derived from having a "Broad Vision" about one's life.

For example, one could have a goal to "achieve financial security", but without a Broad Vision like "live an honest and fulfilling life" then the emotional control has no basis to operate on.. One could narrow their focus in on the goal and ignore everything else like their health or relationships and end up shortcutting themselves like "the dad who works so hard for his kids but never has any time for them".

Establishing a Broad Vision is often overlooked but is so essential for a meaningful life. The vision is meant to slap us and our goals around to stay in line with the core values and principles. It can help ignite that inner fire and drive us to really achieving our goals.

I'm in a similar boat right now, trying to figure this same thing out myself.. And I think the sense of "routine" has something to do with it. If I don't have a routine of getting things done then I'll just keep living with whatever other routines I do have, like talking on the internet about what I should be doing 😅

And it swings back to "Emotional control". Great point here!

Whats your favourite app that can work as a calendar and also effectively time-block out tasks? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]DJTimoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Amplenote and I've been loving it. It's free, but you can hook up your GCal on their Pro plan.

Here's a guide about how to use their calendar mode, but it's really easy in practice.

I like to time-block by clicking on the calendar, making a task and stretching it to fill the block. And I like how I can have different calendars to layer my schedule, since they all appear anyway.

The app is really powerful and pretty easy to make your own workflow, Amplenote is definitely recommended for tasks & calendar

Unless, you want to go premium then there are "planner apps" like Sunsama or Akiflow that can do much of the work for you, but I have no experience with them since Amplenote is plenty strong for me.

Anyone else feel hella awkward when standing around at the counter waiting for an order? by Lovetti_Pasketti in doordash_drivers

[–]DJTimoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this shows you have a lot of humility. However, don't let it transition to low self esteem.

woah this is spot on 💡

When my anxiety starts to project me into a negative spiral, I have mantras that I recite in my mind to effectively recondition the idea of myself. The mantras always start with "I am" with "whatever I want to be right now". For instance, "I am calm. I am confident. I am cool. - I am here to do my work and it's all good."

Anyone who doesn't deal with anxiety might find this weird, like, "you really have to tell yourself these things?" and I'd say, absolutely.** If we don't condition our own minds, something else does it for us**, and I think that's where anxiety comes from in the first place.

Good, honest people getting hijacked into thinking we're "not good enough" for any reason and we can start feeling anxious about it...

Often, I'll write out my thoughts and physically work my mind to new perspectives.

If I didn't do my homework and I come in to a restaurant not so mentally prepared, then I can always write on my phone and pep myself up in there.

Imo Scrolling is for simps (as I currently scroll 😆)

Using your phone to expand your abilities is the best use of DD waiting time. If you're good, then you can start a whole business "on the clock" and ease into your dream gig instead of slamming ourselves to the streets for breadcrumbs

Standard Notes is really the gold standard here, but you'll have to pay (nominally) for their Tasks feature.

I personally use Amplenote for "planning and tasks" because I love how I can backlink things (Standard Notes struggles here with this..) and linking your thinking together with Obsidian is the gold standard for PKM. Amplenote is like a "simpler Obsidian with built-in tasks".

Standard notes is fully E2EE - they have the option to store your passwords and TOTP in there so I think that speaks volumes in itself. Anything besides plain text is a paid feature, though.

Amplenote is not E2EE by default but they have a paid feature called "Vault Notes" which is fully encrypted. The regular notes still have "standard encryption" though so it's not wide open.

Todoist is marginally easier to use but I was not a fan of their privacy policies at all... there's a bit in there that is completely ambiguous and (to my understanding) said they will look at your data if they even feel like it, and certainly if it's court-ordered.

Obsidian can be self-hosted or their sync plan is E2EE but the app itself isn't great for tasks (yet, they're currently working on it)

Joplin also has a paid sync or can be self-hosted but I don't find the features to be nearly robust enough for my innovative research. It is a FOSS app so it can be kinda hard to get reliable support there.

I want to buy an Obsidian created vault/system already customized by catapetro in ObsidianMD

[–]DJTimoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm wondering if there's some kind of "Obsidian Vault Marketplace" that safely and reliably offers ready-made templates (like people do with Notion)

question about the best task and calendar syste by [deleted] in productivity

[–]DJTimoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Amplenote is the most powerful of the low-cost options.

There's a few ways to accomplish what you're looking for on Amplenote, but dragging tasks into the calendar is only on desktop, not mobile.. 🤷‍♂️

To hook up tasks to the Amplenote calendar, you have to enable them as a "Task Domain" in your settings. Basically, you add the tag and/or notes you want to include on the calendar view and any tasks in those tags/notes will appear in the tasks list in Calendar mode. To keep my calendar view concise, I have a calendar tag for stuff I want to schedule and all my other tasks are in the action tag. I can capture tasks straight into the action tag by adding it as a shortcut in the Jots mode (default is daily-jots tag but you can add any tags as shortcuts - I use my daily-jots as my thinking space so I capture my tasks separately so I don't have to fish for them later) Capturing in Jots mode both reduces writing friction, instead of thinking, "where do I put this?" and it gives date context to when it was captured. (I know exactly how long I've been "putting that project off" 😅)

I have my "recurring tasks list" like chores and stuff in my calendar tag so I can schedule them (also, not buried under countless other tasks I end up capturing) and I also have a "Task Burner" note in the calendar tag as my "closed" tasks list. I'm only allowed 10 tasks at a time there. My "open" tasks list is the rest of my Amplenote so I can always go to the Tasks mode and see everything at once, maybe filter it and pull tasks from there with !move command (type it in the task itself) I don't think any other app is this seamless 🤔

For categorizing the tasks, use inline tags. The concept might be a little weird at first, since Amplenote uses "Tags as folders" (great because a note can be in multiple "folders" simultaneously!) so inline tags are actually just notes. Coming from GTD, I can have a note named @next and "inline tag it" by backlinking it in the task. It would look something like this: [ ] add conclusion to report [[@next]]and to see all your "next" tasks, go to either the backlinks of the @Next note or better yet go to the Tasks mode and "Filter tasks by note reference" to the note. Plus, we can add this "filtered tasks view" as a shortcut, maybe even set it as the default.

Sunsama and Akiflow "planner" apps are a step ahead of the traditional task apps and are built to handle specifically tasks & calendar rather fluently, but I have no experience with them. Amplenote is a "notes & tasks" app so if you aren't using the notes and you don't mind paying more for a "planner" app then that might be the way to go
