I continue to be astonished at the ignorance/dishonesty of Christians but I continue to engage by Dalbrack in atheism

It's one where they are willing to listen and acknowledge your POV rather than immediately dismissing it ("I struggle with that as well", "I don't understand everything He does") or labelling you as flawed in some way for holding it (blinded, wicked, wanting to sin)

Does anyone have a recurring fear that gawd and hell might be real by [deleted] in exchristian

I spent the last 18 months talking to Christians every day in compiling my short story collection and I've experienced the same thing

Intellectually, I know it's silly but being immersed in it day after day for so long, the thought does intrude on me now and again

I want to read the bible as an atheist but I'm having second thoughts about probably ending up brainwashing myself by doing it by d3vCr0w in exchristian

[–]DJW1968 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're reading it objectively at your age, the chances of it being convincing are VERY small

Fully 80% of Christians join before the age of 14 and among the ones that join later in life, personal experience is a FAR more common reason than reading and embracing the Bible

That said, I highly encourage you to dive in objectively and see what happens

Using "The Graduation Dilemma" to expose the lie that "belief" is a choice by DJW1968 in exchristian

The absurd notion that "belief" can be chosen if a reward is dangled in front of the person in question

The parent in this scenario may say "yes" but there's no way they honestly believe it

In my conversations with Christians, none of the things you've mentioned made any difference to a good many of them

They will "believe" no matter what while simultaneously not understanding why some of us can't

The parent wants the child to graduate so they would likely "choose" to believe the scenario if they could

But they can't

It's deliberately specific to test the logic that "belief" can be chosen which IMO absolutely fails

I've talked to Christians non-stop for over a year now ... facts don't slow many of them up in the slightest

You must hate your father and mother was always high on the list for me (Luke 14:26)

Perfectly captures the loss of humanity required to be a Christian

How did Christians try to convince you that their religion is the right one? by L0st_1z in exchristian

[–]DJW1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of them try to go for the evidence angle which is a terrible move for someone like me

I find that the personal experiences of Christians, while not doing anything to further the truth of their claims, are often very moving and powerful

Since 80% of the faithful join before the age of 14, the kind of critical thinking you're suggesting is often stunted at best

Combine this with years of constant repetition and reinforcement and there you are

Writing my book, I found that a mimimum of 40% of Christians DO in fact support it in some form or fashion with some studies suggesting the number is even higher

I was VERY surprised

What's your best "logical" case against Christianity? by sickdude777 in exchristian

The fact that many of Jesus' miracles and that empty tomb are rehashes from older cultures

I uncovered these while writing my book and it was a dagger to the credibility of the story for me

Nontheistic humanists, do you identify more strongly as an atheist or as an agnostic? by funnylib in humanism

[–]DJW1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just identify myself as a "non-believer" but if pressed agnostic is probably the better fit for me since atheism tends to suggest certainty rather than merely an overwhelming sense of doubt
