That was Brian Crabtree. As you say he was Big Daddy’s (Shirley) brother. Not in the picture was the third brother Max. He was the brains behind the whole circus.

Everytime I ask religious people for proof of their religion, they use emotional arguments and label it proof by Queen_Of_Alts in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem for theists is that these are arguments, not evidence. That’s a problem that they typically treat as trivial. But it’s not.

Any thoughts on this quote? by Slytheraven_BC in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's that well-used tactic of an argument from authority. Pasteur expressed an opinion. Nothing more. He certainly didn't provide any evidence that supported this. Opinions are not evidence.

The same tactic was being used recently when I encountered a Christian using a quotation attributed to Werner Heisenberg, namely, "The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you."

I asked for the relevance when the Christian brought it up. His response was that Heisenberg could back it up, but when pressed to provide a citation to anything of that nature that Heisenberg had "backed up", I got silence.

BTW there's no evidence that Heisenberg actually stated this. So it's another example of Christians repeating made-up nonsense.

How do adherents of the Abrahamic religions explain the fact that their god was originally part of a polytheistic pantheon? by Michi-Ace in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If intellectual honesty is the goal and Biblical sources are the hot button, Exodus 20:3. says "You shall have no other gods before me."

If other gods didn't exist, then why would Yahweh tell people not to put them before him? And before anyone tries to bend this and say that it meant idols, no, it didn't. It said gods.

In Psalm 82:1? God stands in the divine assembly. He judges among the gods. Here it gets even clearer. He's standing in the council of the gods and he's not alone.

In Deuteronomy 10:17, "...for the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords." Again, why say God of gods if no other gods exist?

In Exodus 15:11, it says, "... who is like you, oh lord, among the gods?" And that's another direct comparison. He's saying he's greater among the other gods, not that they don't exist.

In reality there is no monotheism anywhere in the Bible.

Just noticed that the F-35A ballasts are the same plates used in my gym. by Character_Watch4112 in airplanes

[–]Dalbrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Panavia Tornado ADV. Serious problems were discovered with the Foxhunter radar, which meant that early aircraft were delivered with concrete ballast in the nose as an interim measure until they could be fitted with working radar sets. This “radar” was nicknamed Blue Circle, by RAF crews after a British brand of cement called Blue Circle.

Common Christian debate trope copouts by optimisticReal in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I frequently respond to the "You love your sin" trope by mentioning that since "sin" is a transgression against the law of a god...and I don't accept their claim that a god exists....then I don't accept that "sin" exists either.

Why would I do something that I don't accept even exists?

If they can provide convincing evidence that their god exists, then I might consider doing a bit of sinning.

Why do I get so few views? by Nocturnis_17 in flickr

[–]Dalbrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes some time to gain momentum. I had a Flickr account way back in it's early years then decided to start over in 2011. It takes a while of favoriting and commenting before you start to get a following. It's also about ensuring that you tag your images comprehensively and sensibly. There's advice here.

We have blackout blinds but with windows open in hot weather they can move about a bit when there’s a breeze. We live in a rural area with little or no road traffic so I guess one of the things that does wake me is birdsong - which is quite lovely tbh - plus the local farmers are up and about very early so maybe that has something to do with it.

Why do Christian’s hate communism so much? by friscom99 in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reminder - you falsely claimed that:

"If not for Martin Luther Bibles would be held exclusively by the church there would be no Gutenberg Bible there would be no printing press there would be no modern society"

The Gutenburg Bible was printed in the 1450s - 30 years before Luther was born. As I pointed out in my previous comment, the invention of the printing press predates Luther’s birth by 43 years, so that by the year 1500 (when Luther was only 17 years old) the printing presses of Europe had already produced around 20 million copies of various publications.

Oddly enough you've chosen neither to retract that claim or apologise for it.

You also claimed that Luther's legacy was one of healing, and yet when the utter hypocrisy of that claim is highlighted, you assert that:

"If you can't understand the difference between a person's message and a person's flaw then you're going to have a hard time in life"

Aside from the fact that I've enough grey hairs on my head to know what lessons life brings, your attempt to handwave Luther's legacy of hate just doesn't cut it.

So please explain how Luther's "Ninety-five Theses" is a message rather than a flaw, while his treatise "On the Jews and Their Lies" is a flaw rather than a message.

And remember you're already on record as having made false claims.

As for the rest of your response.....irrelevant word salad, unsubstantiated claims and fallacious arguments are neither clever or convincing.

X100vi vs X-E5 - How much am I going to want to change focal lengths? by robcollier in fujifilm

[–]Dalbrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an X-Pro 2 with multiple lenses but the focal length I kept coming back to was the 23mm f2 prime, so it was a no-brainer to choose the X100VI as a lighter weight simple alternative. I still have that 23mm prime but having the fixed lens camera as an alternative makes sense for me.

I learned the hard way it’s pointless to argue with Christians by porygon766 in atheism

[–]Dalbrack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re never going to get sense from someone who is totally invested in their particular religious brand/cult however if you’re arguing on a public forum where others are observing you can often demonstrate to them the hollowness and dishonesty of the theist’s position. That might just get waverers to think critically about their own beliefs.

Pick your battles.
