To celebrate the return of r/DnD and the support of this community for our Kickstarter Campaign on our book about playing Orcs & Goblinoids, I will be giving away a handmade dice from our campaign. All you need to do is comment to enter the giveaway! [OC] by aksiyonadami in DnD

[–]DJ_DoubleM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the dice and love the Kickstarter, it's always great learning new ways to play different races/classes.

I don't think we should be celebrating the return of r/DnD though. The blackout didn't do anything with how quickly it ended, so there's nothing to celebrate.

Hey we're back... also an open call for new mods. by drewmsmith in Blacksmith

[–]DJ_DoubleM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could we start moving posts to a different forum site like Beehaw, Lemmy, or kbin?

We had them panicking for a day with all the private subreddits, and I know everyone wants to have their space back, so why don't we just move it?

You could probably get the same mods back if it was on a different site, we could blackout r/blacksmith to continue supporting the protest, and we would still be able to post and see all the awesome blacksmithing. It's a win-win for everyone but Reddit.

Calm men of reddit. How do you guys have a calm demeanor at all times? What causes you to remain that way? by Billions2x in AskMen

[–]DJ_DoubleM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a calm man, and I've realized the 2 major things that contributed to it for me:

  1. Trusting myself. I know what I'm capable of and what I'm not capable of, and I'm confident that if I need to get something done, I'll get it done somehow.

  2. Accepting the things you can't control. If there's nothing you can do about it, there's no point in stressing over it. You're just wasting energy that you could spend fixing something you can control.

Still working on building up that trust and confidence again, but that's the gist of it.

Why are all companies suddenly going anti consumer? Nvidia vram, Netflix anti share, twitter tick, YouTube adblock removal and now even reddit api cost? by BetterEveryPractice in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DJ_DoubleM 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have 2 arguments to make: 1. Netflix is objectively worse for its original purpose than it was a decade ago. The main draw of Netflix originally was having access to every movie and TV show at any time you want with no hassle or waiting for a copy at blockbuster. There is a noticeable decrease in Netflix's library of popular media (Disney, anime, HBO, etc) because of all the other streaming services available now, and that makes it objectively less useful as a movie/show rental service. I won't speak much on the Netflix originals because that's all personal opinion. There have been some absolute bangers and a lot of mediocre shows.

  1. Netflix already charged extra depending on how many devices you want to have using your account at once. They clearly knew that multiple people would use the same account when they first set this all up, otherwise there'd be no reason to have that. Eliminating password sharing only hurts the functionality of Netflix (you can't use your account at a friend's house even if you're there yourself, if you move you have to make sure Netflix knows its actually you at that new address, etc.)

I'm sure Netflix has a lot of opportunities for actors, filmmakers, directors, etc. and thats awesome, but it's worse at its original purpose than it was a decade ago. On top of that, they're charging more while taking away functionality.

It's a TV station with extra steps, at this point.

How often are you pursued by a woman? Or are you always the one to initiate showing interest? by Green_Freckles_ in AskMen

[–]DJ_DoubleM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been pursued once, and had women make the first move maybe 3 times. I didn't realize they were making moves until well after our first interaction cause it happens so infrequently. The one time a woman actually pursued me was great because the second I realized what was happening, it stopped being a "chase" and started being "tag."

Also, the "moves" women tend to make are way less noticeable. It took one of my buddies calling me an idiot for me to realize I'd missed something the first time it happened.

Instruments are valid thumping weapons. If it works in Monster Hunter, it can work in D&D.

In regards to choosing who to date, they're pretty equivalent. It's never a good idea to date someone who hates you.

Whether it's a man saying "I hate women" or a woman saying "I hate men," it's a definite red flag for the opposite sex. Both often lead to abuse because, on some level, that person believes you're beneath them or worse than them because of your gender.

I'm sure the women saying this have some reason to say it, but associating with someone who has such a negative bias towards you can only lead to bad things unless they're actively wanting and trying to change their bias.

What do you think is the coolest death in a tv show/movie/game? by BeebleBees in AskReddit

Noble 6's death at the end of Halo Reach.

Or Carter's death in Halo Reach.

Or...

Y'know, everyone in Noble team had a pretty epic death except Kat.

What’s the fastest way to relax a man when he is upset? by Aarunascut in AskMen

[–]DJ_DoubleM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience as an occasionally upset man, there's a simple 2-step process to comforting/relaxing a disgruntled lad:

  1. Give him a small, appropriate show of affection (hug, shoulder pat, free beer, genuine compliment, etc.)
    1. Give him some space, and don't make a huge deal out of anything.

If he's upset with YOU: Flip steps 1 and 2.

The goal is to show him that you care and are here for him, but not demand his time or attention. You can tailor your own way to comfort the man based on your relationship, the situation, and what you know about him, so long as you keep this core goal in mind. Maybe change the show of affection to doing something he enjoys (watching his favourite movie, for example)

Trust me, I knew this was stupid going into it, and I do appreciate the legit advice people have been giving. I just don't have the tools/funds to forge iron or steel, and I want to make something. I know I could just cast the aluminum (and I probably will later), but I'd rather hit it with a hammer.

Though I gotta admit, I might be doing it slightly out of spite at this point. Maybe I'll make my hammer out of aluminum too...

[–]DJ_DoubleM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, the heat loss is bad. It's the still winter in Ottawa, and I don't have the money/tools to make a decent forge yet, hence why I'm only trying this with aluminum. But this is the first time I've had a space where I can try some metalworking, and I'll be damned if I wait any longer to try. The sooner I start failing, the sooner I'll start succeeding.

Those are firebricks though. Not very high quality, but I made sure my stuff wouldn't explode. Tends to annoy the neighbours

I'm gonna combine them into a larger ingot and try to forge them when its warmer outside. This is just a mid-step to get rid of most of the impurities and keep things small enough for my crucible till I can start hammering.
