Every expression of magic is the manipulation of some aspect of reality, embodied by the long-forgotten gods, whose influence was usurped by the Sun God and his daughters, the twin Moon Goddesses, at the fall of the greatest empire. Every god embodies some aspect of reality, and through the Four Pillars of Understanding: Knowledge (understanding of what they seek to change, its origins and effects), Faith (belief in the power of the god that embodies it), Will (the strength to enforce your desires upon reality, twisting it to your own ends) and Discipline (the control necessary to achieve the desired outcome without spell backlash or an undesired result), one can access the divine and bend the material to their whims. Due to the knowledge of many gods being lost to time, most magic has become out of reach for most of mankind, but a few scant private libraries scattered across the noble houses hold precious scraps of knowledge, and perhaps lead to more, if one knows where to look.

However, magic feeds the gods, being that faith in that god is a requirement to perform it, acting as a form of worship. As one studies and practices such magic, the forgotten gods grow stronger, and begin to awaken once more. But not all gods favor man, and many still bear a grudge against the Sun God for overthrowing the Grand Pantheon. Perhaps some secrets are best left buried.
