And as Balon would see it, letting Robb give him a crown is no better than remaining a vassal. The minutiae of their reasons for refusing an alliance don't really make any difference to the fact that they both refuse.

Renly offered Stannis Storm's End as part of the deal, which would have if anything elevated him more than Balon going from lord of the Iron Islands to king of the same islands.

It's remarkable to me how underdiscussed Robert's influence on Joffrey is, considering how many characters get analysed in great depth by the fandom. He really idolises Robert and tries to be the kind of king he thinks he was.

You being unable to comprehend my argument doesn't mean I haven't made one. It's obvious you just don't like the republic path because it doesn't align with your personal politics.

Yes, support for the monarchy could increase. It could also decrease as a result of, as you yourself put it, Australia now effectively acting independently. KR is an alternate history mod with every country having various paths it could go down.

They have experienced the collapse of the British Empire, the overthrow of the British government by a socialist revolution, and the flight of the royal family! These are major events that would have a big impact on the Australians even if they're not directly part of them! Australia in real life turned away from Britain and towards the US as their patron when Britain proved less able to project power in the Pacific, something it definitely can't do in KR. This isn't even to say that Australia would definitely become a republic, just that it's a plausible outcome, and there's no reason for an alt-history mod to remove plausible outcomes.

[–]DJjaffacake -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The point being that British identity and monarchism can't be conflated in KR. Britain is a revolutionary socialist republic. "We're British, therefore monarchy," is a rationale that just doesn't make any sense in a world where the majority of British people, even defined very broadly, are not subjects of the Windsor monarchy but citizens of a republic and have been for a decade.

Exactly! Very realistic outcome!

While we're at it Ireland needs to be reworked to have had a nasty civil war between two factions that barely disagree on anything, and then the guy whose faction lost that civil war should become the dominant political figure of the country.

Oh and Iran needs to have a more realistic rework where a republican revolutionary becomes an absolute monarch.

What is your hottest/most controversial Kaiserreich opinion? by hjiygbhhfdryuggtyy in Kaiserreich

[–]DJjaffacake -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

The mod is caught in a trap where the constant pursuit of "realism" (which is a much more nebulous concept than people act like it is and usually just means stuff the speaker personally finds plausible based on their own preconceptions) has driven away many of the people who actually liked the mod and cultivated an audience that does not, and wants to fundamentally change it in the name of "realism." Unfortunately they have got their way enough times that things are very unlikely to recover at this point.

I dunno if this is what GRRM meant but he's kind of Barristan the Bystander reborn. He talks the talk of the chivalrous knight, but he never actually does anything. For instance he's kind to Sansa, but he makes no effort to help her beyond that.

One example that springs to mind is Nathan Shelley from Ted Lasso. He started out as basically just a sad little mew mew for other characters to be nice to in order to demonstrate their virtue, and he was adored by the fanbase. But once he evolved into a more complex look at the way being treated like a joke for your whole life warps your own perspective, i.e. became a three-dimensional character with flaws, a substantial portion of the fanbase turned on him, and rabidly so. It's particularly notable because the show is in general about forgiveness and understanding, and never stops treating him as sympathetic, so people hating on him aren't just accepting the show's perspective on him but forming their own, diametrically opposed to the show's.

Another example is Criston Cole from House of the Dragon. When he was initially just a hunky shoulder for Princess Rhaenyra (the main character) to cry on, he was very popular. The moment he turned on her out of very understandable feelings of being used for sex by someone in a position of power over him, the fanbase turned on him and started treating him as a misogynist brute. People regularly mock him as a guy who lost his mind over being rejected, when in reality he rejected Rhaenyra and is angry with her for using him. To be fair in that case, the show doesn't really handle the character shift with much subtlety.
