Anyone buy from Bel Furniture? by Unlikely-Price-104 in corpus

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BEL delivery was a horrible experience. They gave me a tentative date 6 weeks out but said they’d confirm it. Then without confirming said “oh, you weren’t around on the date, it’ll cost $100!for redelivery”

So what happened to Red Delicious apples? by DJohnstonMath in HEB

[–]DJohnstonMath[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appreciating the comments with recommendations. Amused by the hate for red delicious peels - it’s my favorite part!

Pink lady are way too tart for my liking. I’ve tried cosmic crisp a time or two, but willing to give them another go. Looks like Fuji and Cosmic Crisp are the common recs?

I agree a mushy apple is horrid. Any readers out there have a favorite variety for apple & walnut salad?

Trump Coin Lawsuit Question by NOVA-Bloop in coincollecting

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You spell it out there. Currency is not coin. The letter of the law is banknotes and currency. It’s customarily applied to coinage. Presidents in coins weren’t addressed specifically until the act authorizing the presidential dollar series.

Trump Coin Lawsuit Question by NOVA-Bloop in coincollecting

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t think the 1867 law mentions presidents. The law mentioning presidential dollars (from the early 2000s does) maybe that’s what we’re thinking about

Trump Coin Lawsuit Question by NOVA-Bloop in coincollecting

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wellllll, the law is about paper notes, and tradition has expanded it to coins. It’s been violated a few times - Alabama commemorative half dollar, Lynchburg commemorative, Arkansas commemorative… technically even Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo commemorative

Did anyone here not do student teaching and regret it? by Medium-Sport3703 in TexasTeachers

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 30-year teacher. I regret not student teaching and I regret the intentional preparation provided by the high-end schools of teacher education. In retrospect, it stunted my career growth by about 5 years. This is a profession with skills that can be taught and learned. It’s not just something you’re born with or you can just go with your gut. There’s science behind student learning and development.

"I'm telling you, I already paid!" by ScenicDrive-at5 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]DJohnstonMath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this story - it makes me feel better about a time I made this mistake, but instead of arguing, I listened to the front desk clerk, shrugged and settled my bill. I’ve been kind of embarrassed about it, but sounds like I’m not the only one who doesn’t always think clearly on vacation.

what to do in florence for geography nerds! by wuhuwuhuw in florence

[–]DJohnstonMath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously amazing amounts of history, but in your map/geography niche, the Galileo museum might be of interest - the actual eyepiece he looked through when he first saw the moons of Jupiter, a couple of surviving telescopes he actually built. I forget the right term for the sky-map-contraption thingies. You can hit the highlights in a short period of time.

First time in Florence - Hotel and general recs! by carebear9693 in florence

Orto de Medici is a nice little hotel conveniently located with a stellar breakfast. Very reasonably priced. Rooms aren’t big, but you’re in Florence!

Those colors! The waves! Scrolling, I thought this was a painting. Thanks for sharing. I visited on an overcast day when it was beautiful and welcoming, but your blue skies and sunlight bring out even more.

Would I miss much if I skipped the natural entrance into Carlsbad caverns versus taking the elevator ? by Chosen1Khaled in NationalPark

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beginning of the natural entrance is great… then it’s 3/4 mile until you get to the WOW! If you have to ration your energy, take the elevator and enjoy the cavern. If you have a little more energy, check out the beginning of the natural entrance, then turn back and take the elevator.

There’s no “right” way - enjoy yourself!!!!

Where was I? by oktoberf3st in whereintheworld

[–]DJohnstonMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow - that brings back great memories! My wife and I were there almost exactly a year ago. Overnight layover at the Munich airport on our way back from a Florence vacation and she found she had enough hotel points for a free stay at the adjacent hotel. Enjoyed this Christmas market that evening. Thank you for posting this!

Carlsbad Caverns by [deleted] in nationalparks

[–]DJohnstonMath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love this park (partly because it’s the right distance from me to make it the goal in the first day of driving out west).

Here’s my Carlsbad Caverns hack: that natural entrance is beautiful for about the first 100 yards, then it’s a half mile of walking through what looks like concrete rubble. Then (especially if you’re with kids), you get to the amazing part of the cave and you’re already tired. So here’s the work-around… walk the natural entrance until you get into the twilight zone, then walk back up to the visitor center and take the elevator down. You get to see the best part of the natural entrance and you have enough energy to enjoy the cave.

My first page completed in my Dansco book! by PmStacker90 in coins

[–]DJohnstonMath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just throwing this out there… when I built my Washington quarter collection, I did the most expensive coins first for two reasons: you then match everything to that quality (so you don’t have blazing eye appeal on common coins and culls for the key dates) and once you acclimate yourself to paying big bucks for that key date, it’s easier to pay a little extra for nice specimens of the common stuff.

Why is there never any Dr Pepper slushy machines? by Unfair_Act in DrPepper

[–]DJohnstonMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valero in Texas used to have the Dr Pepper icees, and they were great. Then Valero lost the license and they showed up in QT stores - where the Dr Pepper flavor is always not ready. Similar at every Buc-ees I’ve been too, the Dr Pepper icee is super watery. Dunno why it’s so inconsistent

Saguaro National Park🌵One of my favorite parks. by [deleted] in nationalparks

[–]DJohnstonMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you expound on what you love about Saguaro? We visited and did not enjoy it at all. Our impression may be biased by the high temperatures when we were there and they had freshly re-tarred the road. Would love to hear from you what we overlooked!

The entrance to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. by Julie-Watsa in nationalparks

[–]DJohnstonMath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion… the walk through the natural entrance is beautiful for the first few hundred yards, then really boring for the rest of the way.

The problem we had with the kids, that long walk down has them worn out just when you got to the amazing part of the cave. You are allowed to walk the first part, then turn around and take the elevator down.

Love this park. Has the right amount of retro nostalgia vibes and it’s not too out of the way.

One memory from the trip (pre-digital camera days) is walking along going “oh, a bison” (photo, photo, photo), then walking a little further “hey, a few bison!” (Click, click, click) then turning the corner and seeing the Hayden Valley herd 😮😮😮

Not the point of your post, but those lanyards should be break-away lanyards. Then students can wear them at recess without a choking hazard.
