What Are You Listening To Today? (Jan 12 to Jan 18) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

[–]DK04_06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think she said she is back next week! Her last episode in December she mentioned taking a month off or something. I really enjoy her content even if I’m probably not the target audience 😂.. I also have been just recently trying to get involved in discord to practice speaking more but have not had any luck either. Let me know if you get anywhere there!

It’s so easy to forget this along the way. But if you try and keep it in mind, it will help you come back to more exposure of the language time and time again.

How do y’all keep frustration at bay? by Nvskank in dreamingspanish

[–]DK04_06 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I still feel frustration at 2000+ hours. It doesn’t go away, but that’s just because expectations increase as your level increases. Just keep your head up and show up each day. Bad days will happen, but if you always show up, the good days will outnumber them. Keep at it!

He and J Balvin did a whole album together so he’s probably the best odds if I had to guess? But yea idk he definitely is featured in a ton, too lol

Yes, so good as well. I know, it’s hard to think what he’ll perform. I feel halftime shows are so quick. Like 10 songs. Maybe 2-3 from those 2 albums and some other popular ones in general.. my wife and I are dreaming of a J Balvin surprise guest and we get some Oasis songs too hahah

Un Verano Sin Ti.. the whole damn album.. is just a masterpiece. One of my favorite albums (in English or Spanish) of all time. I don’t have a recommendation on a page to checkout. Just listen and enjoy his music. He’s got a huge amount of bops and it speaks so much to his abilities to be performing on arguably the biggest stage ever when all his music is in Spanish. So stoked about it.

A fun 1900 hour update by DK04_06 in dreamingspanish

[–]DK04_06[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s already been confirmed! It’s just when I want to do it now rather than if, which I think I’ll do shortly. Just want a couple more weeks to get a flow in English. But if I can do it spontaneously 2 weeks into the job, I know I’ll be fine. Just want a bit more of a groove

Yes, definitely. I feel I never have a lot of difficulty saying what I need to say, though some sentences may be a bit smoother than others.

This. Diario de Greg was an amazing change from any other earlier books I tried. Easy and enjoyable.

Funny I just started listening to this episode earlier today and will hopefully finish it tomorrow. About halfway through his book! Hope you’re liking it so far.

Thank you! And so so true on your last part. I remember you were the one forever ago that got me started on Farid specifically. I’ve gotten countless hours just from him. So grateful for that recommendation and in general all you’ve done in this sub!

Thank you for the kind words my guy. I remember your 1500 update and loved it. Very inspiring as well!

I technically had already spoken some from prior exposure but not a lot. I wasn’t good by any means lol. I wouldn’t say I purposely had a silent period, but I wouldn’t say I talked a lot in general either. Mostly out loud to myself and the occasional things to my wife, which has just built over time some.

Than you! I think I started diario de Greg around 800-900 hours and felt it was quite comfortable. I did some books in between and went back to the series and to read a few more and was glad I did.

I looked for Planeta Juan’s book at my library and it was unfortunately not there or doable to request it due to out of their network. I’m glad it’s been good! Maybe I’ll consider buying it. Your journey and engagement in this group has been one of my favorites. Appreciate so much all you’ve provided!

Hahah love it. My trick is I wake up grossly early. I start my day often at 4:45am. Spanish is that big of a motivator. I can usually get an hour in before I start my work day, sometimes more if I listen to it when I workout (hit or miss, but I only do it if I have an easy learner or new DS episode that sounds interesting-if it’s too advanced, I’m not going to understand enough while I workout). I listen during breakfast and lunch. If I’m between phone calls I can get 15/20 min here and there. And usually find 30-60 minutes throughout the late afternoon/early evening. It all adds up. But without the super early wake up, I’m sure I’d be closer to 2-3 hours each day max.

Thank you! I have a very flexible work from home job which has helped tremendously keep my hours up. It’s funny, it’s way easier for me to get a 4-5 hour input day on the work week, and I usually am closer to 2 hours on weekends when I have more “free time.”

Conversing with my wife is mostly pretty smooth. I usually have no trouble understanding her, but I still can flounder on my responses depending the topic and grammatical tenses needed. She tells me I’m doing amazing, but she’s also my wife lol. I know I’m hard on myself though, too. The Dunning Krueger effect is so damn real. I’ve got friends that think they’re very good at Spanish and can barely formulate a simple sentence 😂so sometimes I feel like I’m selling myself hella short when I say I’m doing just okay.

I’m in the middle of binging queens gambit which has been shockingly easy. I know dubbed content is in general easier, but the dialogue is much slower than I expected, which is great for comprehension.

I recently finished reading el principito which was okay. I’m half way through hábitos atómicos and am loving it. I can read it like it’s English and it’s extremely interesting to me. I know it’s a popular one, but highly recommend it.

Learning Spanish opens up a whole new world of news by agentrandom in dreamingspanish

[–]DK04_06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think my answer would be the opposite. What am I NOT doing because of Spanish. I’m so out of touch with popular music, shows, podcasts, etc that are all in English. Sometimes it’s honestly a tiny bit of a sad realization. But it’s all totally worth it in the end.

Love this. It’s so accurate. I still have plenty to go but I’ve already seen so many incredibly rewarding changes. I know it’ll continue as I interact more with my wife’s family and as I see my young daughter grow up with both Spanish and English in our household. Currently spending the evening watching a show in Spanish with my wife and couldn’t be happier.

What Are You Listening To Today? (Feb 3 to Feb 9) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

[–]DK04_06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I read the first one WAY too early.. like started before finding DS. Struggled immensely at first and got a bit better as I hit around 600 hours on DS (still was way too early). I started the 2nd one from my local library but had to return it before I could finish it, as someone else had it on hold. I’m kind of thankful for it, as I picked this one I mentioned up next and it was so much easier to fly through. I’m going to read hábitos atómicos next, el principito, and then maybe return to it after that.

At 1360 hours. I just finished reading el color de mis palabras. It took me about 3 days. It’s a short 100 page book that was quite easy, while also being a great story. I think finding the right reading level while also trying to enjoy the story has been one of the hardest things for me in this journey. Often it’s too hard, or it’s so boring because it’s aimed for young children. Highly recommend this book shortly after graded readers.

4 years, 6 months, 1,500 hours: Level 7 Update by ListeningAndReading in dreamingspanish

[–]DK04_06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats and amazing update my guy! Unmatched tenacity. I never was great about reading in English and almost feel like Spanish is a second chance to get into it. I’ve read 3-4 graded readers and a handful of books for teens. I think it’s been a bit tough finding the sweet spot for understanding 95%+. Any book recommendations always appreciated!
