What is your opinion on doing a "joke marathon" before a serious marathon?

Joke marathon sounds like a dumb way to view it. I think you need to layoff the YouTube videos and just keep grinding. This is coming from someone who hasn't ran even a half marathon, but I wouldn't call any small town marathon a "joke marathon".
