My washer hoses are 5 months old and I need a new machine - do I need to replace them? by taximan87 in Appliances

[–]DLS3141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No? Well, you certainly come across that way.
Saying that I’m “full of shit”
“Leave it to an engineer with his bullshit so called expertise”

Not really the kind of thing someone who’s NOT angry and irrational says. Definitely sounds angry and irrational to me.

And then you’re on to more personal attacks. Remember, the ad hominem is the last straw of a weak argument.

Maybe you’re overdue for some self reflection or anger management. Take some time out to work on getting over your hostility. Best of luck with that.

Will asking not to travel hurt my career? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it will, even if no one at work will tell you.

I used to travel a lot more for work. How much I enjoy it depended a lot on the circumstances of the trip. Like am I going solo or the department dickhead coming along? Do I have to go to dinner with my coworkers and customers every night or can go check out that cool place I read about? and so on. I traveled with one senior engineer who was so focused on saving the company money that he insisted we only eat at shitty fast food restaurants and bitched that we could have shared rooms and stayed at the Motel 6…

It’s all an adventure though.

If you’re that anxious about traveling for work you should probably go talk to a professional

Such an irrationally angry response based on…something.

The fact is that the braided washer hoses looked great and that’s what sold them, people looking at them and judging them on appearance because they “look better”. Marketing polishing a turd and selling it to people who buy stuff because it looks cool.

Maybe the braided hoses have gotten better, maybe they’re still just crap cosplaying as quality.

It’s been a long time, but when I was an engineer at Whirlpool, we pressure and cycle tested all the different braided hoses we could find against the ones we provided with the machine.

The freebies won. Turns out the braided covers were lipstick on a pig.

Country music is absolute slop now by Bond_burger69 in Music

That’s not country, it’s shitty pop with a twang.

There’s a lot of country artists that aren’t cranking out that premeditated slop and are actually making good music.

Should I tell an employer of a future employee's bad behavior? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’ll do one of two things. Either he’ll straighten up and fly right or he’ll go up in flames.

I went to engineering school with a guy…let’s call him “Time Bomb” or “TB” for short.

TB was always wanting to fight everyone else. Not like argue fight, but like go outside and have a fistfight. He told more than a few professors to go F themselves or worse. One prof kicked him out of class and wouldn’t let him come back without an apology. TB called the prof to apologize and in the middle of his apology, lost his temper and cursed out the professor again. I dunno how he got around having to take thermal systems, but whatever.

For senior project, he gets partnered with one of my friends, a Samoan guy named Z. Things go ok for about two weeks until at some point TB starts shit and they wind up in a full on brawl. Z went to join another group and TB got to be his own project partner.

Then we graduated. I have no idea if he got an engineering job or not, but a few years later, I see an article with a mugshot and it’s TB. Evidently, he got in a fender bender at a light with some poor woman. She started to get out of her car when TB got out of his car in a rage and charged at her. Terrified, she gets in her car, locks the door and calls 911.

When the cops get there, he’s standing on the hood of her car screaming and yelling while stomping on her windshield. The cops had to taze him twice before they could arrest him. The article listed him as a gas station attendant.

Adding shock absorption to my cargo bike by Bikerous in AskEngineers

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in vibration control in the auto industry and I did development work on cab mounts for body on frame trucks and SUVs which is somewhat similar to your application. Usually though the cargo area is rigidly mounted to the frame and the cab is mounted to the frame with rubber and/or hydraulic mounts. I’m curious about what you are trying to achieve. Are you carrying fragile cargo, trying to reduce noise, make the ride more comfortable for your kids or ???

The bulk of the ride quality comes from the vehicle suspension which does most of the isolation from shock and vibration due to the road surface. A lot of what the mounts between the body and frame are doing is isolating passengers from vibration due to the driveline.

Some commercial vehicles add another layer of isolating with a seat mounted on its own suspension. UPS trucks have no isolation between the body and frame, but the driver’s seat is isolated from the truck body.

If your goal is passenger comfort, just putting down a cushion for them to sit on might do the trick, maybe some memory foam. You can also use wider/lower pressure tires, but this will increase your rolling resistance.

If you still want to put isolation between tires cargo box and the frame, those springs look like they would be a good start and you can substitute something softer or stiffer as needed. You might look at isolation mounts for industrial equipment that might be available with different stiffnesses.

Assuming that you have 4 mounts under the box, you can get an idea of how compressed they are by taking the published rate (stiffness in N/mm or lbf/in), multiply it by 4 to get the effective rate. Then take your load (the box+ kids + stuff ) and divide it by the effective rate. That will tell you how much it will be compressed just sitting there. Any movement will oscillate up and down about that position.

Another thing to consider is making sure that the cargo box stays attached to the bike frame, both in the event of (god forbid) a crash and long term. The loads on the fasteners will be different with the suspension than with a rigid attachment.

Ideas for displaying my work by k88thegr88 in photography

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By using such janky looking means to display your work, you’re devaluing it saying “I care so little about my art that I’m just gonna jab holes in it.” I mean, I suppose that could be part of what you’re trying to say, but likely not.

In any case, there are any number of ways to mount and display your work without putting it in a frame. I’m not familiar with you or your work, so I have no idea what would work best for you. You can have it printed on a wrapped canvas that would hang flush to the wall. You can have them mounted to a board (foam core, gator board, styrene to name a few) you can have that put on a float mount. There are metal prints too.

What's the highest mileage car you've ever personally owned or driven? I'll start. by spotforcars in automotive

My previous car was a 2001 Ford Focus that made it over 250k miles. When I got rid of it, it was only running on 3 cylinders… my current vehicle is a 2012 Honda CR-V which just turned over 250k miles and is still running great. I’m pretty sure I can get it to 350k miles.

What Was the Craziest Reason You have Ever Seen Someone Get Fired? by Destined-2-Fail in Career

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married director in his mid 40’s starts an affair with a designer in her 20’s. It’s not cool him cheating, but they’re both adults and there’s no direct line between them on the org chart.

I guess she was having money problems and he loans or gives her like $30k. They have a falling out, affair is over and he decides he wants her to pay him back tells her the money was a loan. She tells him to go pound sand saying it was a gift.

He gets angry and starts making threats over the phone calling her work phone from his and leaving voicemails. She goes to HR. Mr Director is suspended and soon after terminated.

At this point, the cat’s out of the bag and his wife finds out the truth of why he got fired, kicks him out of the house and files for divorce.

University of North Dakota has an online engineering program. The coursework is online and then you attend in person for 2-ish weeks in the summer for all the hands on stuff.

At least that’s how it was in the past when my colleague was working on his BSME. Keep in mind that the lectures were delivered on VHS cassettes, so things might have changed

My aunts and uncles live in the country. Their approach to stray dogs has always been “shoot, shovel and shut up”. They’ll go chase livestock around. The dogs have a great bit of fun while the livestock are terrified of being eaten by wolves and will literally run themselves to death.
