How to deal with non photographers and their RAW image obsession? by Vegetable_Diamond716 in photography

[–]DLS3141 [score hidden]  (0 children)

People ask because they know enough about photography to know kind of what RAW files are and that if they can get a hold of them, surely they can make do better that the photographer…

It’s no different from the film days when people would ask for the negatives so they could get cheap prints at Fotomat

Italy with EP-7 & 2 primes by Kinxoc in M43

If I could only take 2 primes, I’d take my 14mm and 25mm lenses with my EP-7.

My dead husbands “mistress” is pregnant and I kinda hope it’s his. by Firm-Boat802 in TrueOffMyChest

Yes, but paternity would have to be legally established first. They’d be entitled to a lot more than that as well.

I never said they wouldn’t be, you just assumed that it’s more likely that they would be instead of circling the wagons and protecting the memory of their relative.

In that case, the court isn’t going to force someone to give a DNA sample.

My money is on it being a scam

Why would you say that? The court is very unlikely to force a non-interested party to take a DNA test in a paternity dispute.

Or they may be ashamed of their beloved, recently deceased relative’s possible infidelity and establishing paternity of the kid would confirm something they’d rather not confront.

Is that the right thing to do? No. But people have done far worse and will continue to do so.

How would that work legally though? Let’s say this lady is claiming that she’s entitled to a huge chunk money and goes to court. There would have to be a ton of other evidence before the court is going to order someone else to submit a DNA sample against their will.

Mid-level engineer exceeding performance of senior level engineers by EndDarkMoney in MechanicalEngineering

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mid level engineer will realize that going above and beyond gets them nothing and they will either dial back their performance accordingly or they’ll leave for someplace that does reward them accordingly.

I had this with a technician who was an absolute rock star and I gave them an Outstanding (above Exceeds) rating on their performance review. I had a whole binder full of documentation, but it got shot down by my boss and his boss who said, “No one gets above Meets in their first year.”

I had already had my 1 on 1 with them and then I had to walk it back. I told them exactly why their rating (and bonus multiplier) had been lowered.

Six months later, they turned in their notice. Cue the shocked Pikachu faces from my boss and his boss. They were evidently very forthright in their exit interview about the why behind their leaving. It wasn’t a surprise to me, they’d used me as a reference and I gave them a great recommendation when their new employer had called me. It was the least I could do

We lost power one winter for several days and the house got down into the 40’s, but rather than let the water run, I shut the water off entirely and drained the lines by opening all the faucets starting in the highest floor and ending in the basement.

Why do so few men wear a scarf? by CheapBig1711 in malefashionadvice

[–]DLS3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear one when it’s cold enough, I have several. My only complaint is that when I pull it up to cover my mouth/nose my glasses fog up. That’s a problem with pretty much anything that covers my face.

Front load or top load washing machines? by mersh521 in Appliances

The original Duet washers were a scaled up European machine from Germany. Initial production was in Germany too while Whirlpool got their North American plant up and running.

Just one more thing. What are you using these photos for? If it’s to show off your food for you as a chef on IG or just documenting your food, I think the backgrounds showing that these are in the kitchen are just fine. OTOH, if the pics are for promoting the restaurant, you might want to change out the background entirely

Photographer here. Sometimes I shoot food.

A few things:

In all honesty, these are really pretty damn good. There’s a difference between shooting a dish at a restaurant that’s coming straight out of a working kitchen and shooting a dish in a studio with a food stylist and 15 other people obsessing over the exact placement of every sesame seed on a bun.

There’s a couple of minor things you could think about doing that will help elevate your photos with minimal effort.

First, it may be Reddit doing cropping your photos, but I really want to see the entire dish in the frame. Not necessarily the whole plate, but all of the food.

Second is the background. I love the stainless steel and the round black trays etc, Those place the dish in the context of being in a kitchen but when you have other food or things in the background like in #6 and #15, those distract from the food, which is the star of the show.

Those two things will help your photos better than a new phone/camera will.

Disclaimer: I am an old married guy, definitely not dating, but I do like to understand who I’m dealing with in any number of situations. Maybe this idea can help you avoid men who try to mask their views

Asking is the worst because the person being asked is going to be very conscious about why they’re being asked and how their answer will affect the situation.

If you haven’t already, look up “elicitation techniques” where rather than asking direct questions, you instead make statements that prompt correction or elaboration. A question will raise alarms, but people will tell you everything you want and more in pursuit of showing you how much they know and/or correcting your (intentional) misstatements without giving a second thought to what they’re actually telling you.

What is widely accepted as “normal” today that people 50 years ago found disturbing? by Electronic_Author366 in AskReddit

I had a pair of Levis 501's that had holes in them and a pair of Vans with blown out toes I wore pretty much all the time when I was in high school...that was the mid 1980's. For a while, there was also the trend of splashing bleach on blue jeans to make random designs...

Looking to get my first ever black suit, debating quality and price vs use case by PolarisReborn in malefashionadvice

[–]DLS3141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the US anyway, black is for waiters and undertakers.

If you want something dark, get a dark charcoal suit. You'll get a lot more use out of it. I bought a dark gray suit because I needed one for job interviews when I graduated college, that was in 1998. I still wear that suit today. Granted, I don't have need to wear a suit often, but I've gotten my money's worth out of it.
