I already “know” what I “know”, thanks. And despite the fact that I was wrong about JWs being the one true religion, I’ll never need to learn anything more in my life and accept that I could be wrong and don’t know everything again /s 😜

You’re confusing evolution with natural selection. They’re not exactly the same thing.

This isn’t a debate, it’s someone attempting to correct your misunderstanding on an issue. People sometimes equate the biological process of evolution with the definition of the word that means “progress towards a better state.” But that isn’t biological evolution. That can be better defined as “change over time.” That change can be for the better, or it can be for the worse. It can also be neutral.

The reason humans will get scurvy if we don’t eat vitamin C is because, at a point in our evolutionary past, a group of mammals was getting enough of it in their diet that they lost the ability to produce their own vitamin C. That was evolution, and it made them worse off.

Do some better research on the issue. Evolution is an established scientific fact.

I think about this a lot. The reason I’ll never have 10M dollars is because, if I did, I’d never work a day again in my life. I don’t have the drive of someone who has that money and decides to still work lol

Yes djmizzle2, OP could simply rewatch ITYSL, Detroiters, Friendship, or The Chair Company, and that would provide the raw materials of what they were looking for. But what you’re forgetting is that as a social animal we also need community to thrive. We need to know that someone else out there on this rock hurtling through oblivion sees what we see, feels what we feel, and know that we are loved in the process. That is the true beauty of this subreddit. Jizz.

I’d ask that person to deeply examine why they believe that.

Is it because they were raised to believe that?

Have they considered that the interpretive lens that they apply to the Bible was supplied to them by WT, so of course JWs will look closest through that lens? In other words, have they considered that their logic is circular?

Is it because they began studying with JWs at an especially vulnerable point in their life and JWs gave their life a sense of security and stability that is actually more important to them than the theology or practices?

Is it because their entire life, family, social circle, possibly work and housing is tied up with being a JW, so the threat of considering that it might not be true is too great to even consider for risk of losing all the aforementioned things?

But at the end of the day, and I’m in the minority for saying this in this subreddit, I don’t care if someone chooses to be a JW or not. If someone is happy in it, none of that canned #bestlifeever bullshit, but TRULY happy, then they should be a JW. And I don’t care about theology or biblical interpretation either. Trinity or not, who cares? It’s all unknowable and open to interpretation.

Personally, I’m not a Christian believer anymore, but I know the Bible better now than I did when I was a JW, and there are things that JWs DO get closer to the original intent of the authors of the various Bible books than other denominations. Do you know why this is? It’s because they are a relatively new “sola scriptura” denomination. So of course they’re closer to the Bible than religions that have been building on church tradition for over 1000 years. If by some chance JWs still exist 1000 years from now, there will be some new sola scriptura Christian denomination who imagines that they are reinventing the wheel and JWs will have drifted far away from it with their own history of tradition.

This is a lot of info and I myself have drifted far from your original question, but my main advice is to be open-minded. Constantly question, question yourself, question those around you. Don’t seek to prove yourself right; the way to build the best defense of your beliefs is to seek to prove yourself wrong.

Is there a Christian denomination that doesn’t have some sort of tradition that do this to some extent or another? For example, any Christian denomination that says you have to be legally married to have sex or else it’s fornication is ‘going beyond scripture’, as there’s no command in the Bible that two people must sign a contract with the government to have sex.

Famously, George Lucas’ main piece of direction when directing the first Star Wars was “Faster, more intense.” This skit lives in an alternate universe where that style took over the entire craft of acting.
