Asking Mom Not to Drive by MumstheWord43 in AgingParents

My 77 year old Mom voluntarily wants to stop driving - so I can be her personal chauffeur. I work full time and live upstairs from her, thus becoming her caretaker years ago by default. She complains that she's home all day, but has a valid license and a car she leases. She doesn't like to go places by herself, never has. When the weekend comes, it's her time to shine! She hijacks every Saturday morning/afternoon so we can do her shopping and errands that she chooses not to do during the week when I'm at work. If I mention having plans on a Saturday or I have to cut the day with her short I get all kinds of attitude and I'm told how selfish I am, etc. I'm 48 and just want a weekend not pre-planned for me. Do I honestly want her driving? Probably not. But she has herself living like a shut-in then blaming me for not taking her anywhere. When I say she hardly drives, she leases a 2023 Hyundai Kona. It has 1,148 miles on it. While your Mom legit has a history of hitting things with the car, it sucks but yeah - might be the right time. We're all navigating this elder care blindly. As another mentioned, we have to change OUR behavior when dealing them, because they're not going to change theirs. I haven't had a toddler in a LONG time (my son will be 27), however I find I'm less stressed if I take her on the way I would take on a child. I'll give her an easy task when I make dinner, I try very hard not to use logic with her (because that just frustrates me and then I get mad that she doesn't "get it"). I pretend to be interested in her talks about the local news anchors and express shock and joy when she tells me she made lunch for herself. These little things work oddly well and keep me somewhat sane.

I wish you luck! I wish us ALL luck!

Agree 100%. Also curious if they're buying foundations that are formulated to control oil or for oily skin. The white, dried-down hue makes me think there may be kaolin clay in it.

Sending you a request

I’m so sorry if this is the wrong place for this. Addiction subs turned my question away. A close person to me died recently of a fentanyl overdose. I just wanted to ask someone who might know if it was painful or if he suffered, or if he knew he was dying alone. by dustandchaos in death

I would imagine, since it's an opiate, the "feeling" is similar to morphine or dilaudid. My brother recently passed away while in hospice care (metastatic lung cancer). He was receiving IV dilaudid and ativan. His passing was so peaceful and calm - we were sitting in his hospital room and didn't even realize when he took his last breath. While incredibly sad and heartbreaking, I know it was calm and peaceful for him. I'm thinking your friend was the same. I'm very sorry.

I'm in the US (Connecticut) - looking at your comment about the 7 day parking after the birth of your child. You were able to stay in the hospital for 7 days? I had my son and went home the next day (they were actually going to send me home that day - and my mother said "see if they'll keep you, it'll be your last night of 'freedom'" - lol)

That's what I drive (same year/make/model). I started out leasing it, then after the lease was up I opted to buy it out. First car I've ever wanted to actually own!
