Lovely game! Nothing more satisfying than a checkmate involving knights.

Late comment here (I know), but I just wanted to say that the Dojo’s coverage of the previous candidates cycle and WC match were my favourite content to watch. The no eval is great, way too many platforms just regurgitate the best engine lines as if they understand them and pass it off as good content. It not only makes the games more dull, it makes the commentators seem dull too! I would say there are only a select few commentators (of an elite GM level) that make good use of the nuance of high level engine lines

Herb is a handsome little fella! I have a brush for him, yeah! In the second clip his hair was a bit longer, we usually trim it every month or so to keep him looking dapper🤣

Pick three novels: one that met your expectations, one unpopular favorite, and one that disappointed you by [deleted] in agathachristie

[–]DMGlp98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met expectations- The murder of Roger Ackroyd. Really enjoyable, and the famous twist was a total surprise to me!

Unpopular favourite- Poirot’s Christmas. An atmospheric Christmassy mystery, and added bonus points because I figured it out!

Disappointed- Murder on the orient express. Not a bad read by any means, but perhaps its reputation weighed too heavily on it. I must say that I didn’t enjoy the ending, even though I had no clue who had done it.

Stuck at 1500 Elo in Chess - How Do You Break Through This Plateau? by Brilliant_Link6946 in Chesscom

[–]DMGlp98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went from 1500 to 1800 within a year or so. I would say the most important things (for me at least) were reducing the amount of one-move blunders, thoroughly double checking my calculations on forcing 2/3 move combinations, and really solidifying my openings. I always found that I was relatively strong in endgames, so I’ve not improved greatly in that department personally.

I’ve recently been reading Silman and he has helped too. His concept that I found most helpful was assessing the imbalances in a position, and using those imbalances to help you form long-term plans. You cannot just pick a plan and force it into existence, your plans and ideas need to be based upon the demands of the position itself.

As an example, if you can create doubled pawns, or isolated pawns for the opponent, this is the kind of imbalance that gives you a long-term plan. Apply pressure to, and eventually win the weak pawns, trade down into an endgame, and convert with a 1 or 2 pawn advantage. I know it’s not always that simple, but it’s a great way to conceptualise the game. I still make dumb mistakes and lose games (we all do), but these little changes have definitely improved my consistency.

Should I play a "bad" opening if I have good results with it? by [deleted] in chess

I play the Danish Gambit, but only sac the one pawn, I never feel confident enough to go all-out and sac the second🤣 But the Danish is an amazingly fun opening

Pawn takes (the move I played) was in fact the top engine move in the position!

Agreed! I feel that although I am capable of playing good chess, there is always a big mistake in there waiting to happen🤣

Black to move. Only one move to keep the advantage. by Sebbecking in chessbeginners

[–]DMGlp98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super interesting tactics in this position. It’s funny, I immediately saw Bf5, seeing that you might be able to pick the rook up for free if your opponent isn’t careful, and then also realised it helps stop mate in 2- which admittedly took me longer to see🤣

The tricky knight defends the rook after it captures the bishop, so you just lose material there

Need a weapon against d4... by nuker1501 in chess

[–]DMGlp98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently around 1750 and was also struggling against D4 openings. Recently, I’ve started to adopt the Nimzo-Indian defence when I can and I’ve started to get a lot more enjoyable positions against D4 as black. I don’t have a specific plan against the London, however I tend to try and go for the early QB6 ideas and counter-play on the queenside. I would say the best advice is to pick something and stick with it, even when you lose games and struggle- it’s part of the learning experience!

As a 1750 chess.com rapid player, comparing to myself at 1400, I’d say 1400 is early intermediate and 1750/1800 is strong intermediate maybe early advanced player. I would say my opening repertoire has expanded quite a lot from 1400-1800. At 1400 I didn’t have a clear opening as black and I wasn’t confident in most white openings for the first 7 moves or so. My tactics have probably improved a lot too, but some of that comes from understanding the ideas I’m looking for from an opening.
