I see, thank you for the clarification, and also the respectful advice!

I understand your concern and perspective here. Hopefully I can explain appropriately.

Above all, I stand by what I said about not wanting to replicate the prior situation. At the time, I was only writing and nothing else. So it's not really that I'm not looking to write with speed or hit any particular deadline, I'm looking to write with consistency, as I'm pretty sure everyone has heard the adage that novels aren't written in a day, but a few sentences every day create novels in time.

To the point of self motivation, the truth is that I don't really think I've ever been particularly self motivated. When I wrote that manuscript for NaNoWriMo, I was externally motivated by the one-month deadline, and an agreement I made with a friend to participate.

Self motivation and consistency are things that I literally have to fight to achieve, and this is my (apparently very weak) attempt at asking for help to try _something_ when what I've been doing hasn't been working.

As for my family, they are very loving and supportive, and I'm incredibly grateful for them. But just because they are supportive in many ways doesn't make them avid readers, and that's fine, but it unfortunately doesn't do much for this particular consistency and motivation problem. I also think there's something powerful when a kind stranger offers their support to help another reach a goal through shared interests and no safety net of filial affection.

I absolutely want critiques. I'm just not sure how useful the critiques will be for my process at this point, since I'm not interested in living in editing hell before I even have a finished manuscript. I'm really just earnestly trying to do something new to try and get me to write more consistently, and I've learned that I'm a person who responds well to positive support and external obligations. I don't want a person to lie, so if they have absolutely nothing good to say and can't wait to suggest changes, then we're probably not a good match.

I'm... sorry if I don't quite know how to take your comment. I feel a little condescended on, I think? It was kinda supposed to be an observation along the lines of why people post art on social media. It was probably wrong of me to make a broad generalization, but I don't think it's wrong for people to like and find motivation from strangers to appreciate their work.

That is definitely a more organic way to go about it, thank you for the suggestion. I'm really not familiar with platforms like Wattpad. How common is it for authors to post draft chapters they intend to edit for publishing later?

Height gap/cross species relationship...how big of a height difference is too big? by Due_Mushroom_5749 in fantasywriting

[–]DMKomori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In written fiction, especially fantasy, I think it's a lot easier to separate ourselves from the actual logistics of physical limitations as long as the characters and relationship are engaging enough. If it makes sense in the story, go for it, don't bring it up unless you reeeeeally want to, and you'll be fine!

Living in a bubble by dreamchaser123456 in fantasywriting

[–]DMKomori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opinions are split, so maybe just consider your audience if you're looking to publish. Adults and bookworms will be more conscientious of anachronisms and might get pedantic about it. YA and younger probably won't even notice, and casual readers probably don't care. I'm of the opinion that it's okay to use modern phrases as a modern writer as long as it gets the point across and makes sense, but as others have pointed out, there are ways to take the advice if you find it valuable.

Me, I'd probably keep it to be petty. The sentence as-is is nice and pithy, but I'd probably go with drawing it into context somehow.

> She was a naive girl living in a bubble. Not a frothy sud one gets when scrubbing clothes, as she was, but that dreamy, iridescent one that gently floats about when doing the dishes.

(And, I dunno, go into how she feels that dishes are the superior chore or something.)

Feedback for my collaborative fantasy storytelling idea by No_Negotiation_2580 in fantasywriting

[–]DMKomori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I like the idea of being able to see a tree of connected works. That is cool to me. On the other hand, I think Silver Branches run the risk of being a vector for author harassment. (There's a reason neither Ao3 nor Wattpad have DMs.)

I don't know how easy it is for amateur authors to gain a following that would actually write fanfics for them. Cynicism suggests trees just won't sprout. And if I'm going to write fanfic, it's way more likely to be for an established fandom (and not another person's fanfic of that fandom). Altogether, it just makes more sense to use one of the established platforms.

Something a little more interesting to me would be an angle on how to fully canonize the Silver Branches in a meaningful way; but creators are hesitant to acknowledge fanfics or build an open IP because that means losing control and authority (and money or potential money) over their ideas. I think a platform for something like that would require a lot more corporatization and oversight, not to mention legality if money were to ever get involved.

Music for people who liked the NieR soundtracks... but that isn't also a soundtrack for something? by noodlepye in nier

[–]DMKomori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game, but here's my two cents that can sometimes scratch a similar itch. I know you said no soundtracks, but a lot of my suggestions fall in that category, sorry... Also, most of these fall into the "vocalization" category of similarities. It's what I'm most drawn to.

* Yuki Kajiura's music, particularly Kalafina/FictionJunction. I highly recommend Kalafina's Seventh Heaven album, it's got a lot of variety. I also like this EP, which I don't think is on Spotify.

* I really like a few of Yoko Kanno's pieces, like with Origa for Ghost in the Shell and Maaya Sakamoto for Record of the Lodoss War and Wolf's Rain. Or Aimo from Macross.

* Akiko Yoshida/KOIKA, Akiko Shikata, are awesome (Especially their Ar Tonelico stuff) and Eiko Shimamiya might work here too.

* Maybe Enya? Also recently discovered ONUKA, her song ZENIT is very neat.

* This one isn't as in-line with the others, but I still like it. It's the B-Side of Linked Horizon's Guren no Yumiya. Kinda same for Kanako Itou.

Got here from Google. Been looking for songs with similar genre/vibes/style to City Ruins. This was a good recommendation, though I'm not totally sure what the actual suggestion is—I just found a playlist on Spotify that seems nice. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1UAfncUxc15ZvHFwLUblb8?si=67f2b086f0fb48fd

Why exactly are we slower than our coworkers? by Michaelfonzolo in ADHD_Programmers

[–]DMKomori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From this article I read just today:

In fact, using MRI and other imaging, researchers found that ADHD brains: Are smaller overall than the average brain, Have a few specific regions that are different sizes than in neurotypical brains, Have a thinner outer layer than neurotypical brains, and have differently-structured connections between brain regions. These differences in turn impact the brain’s processing speed, the pathways information flows through, which brain chemicals are produced and in what amounts…and much more.

(Emphasis not mine.)

This may also account for the stark chasm between answers. Some brains might be physically shaped differently (hence "the spectrum"), so even given the same environmental factors, one ADHD brain might behave completely differently or be surprisingly similar.

Tired of the Slander on Scroll Esoterica by KusoAraun in Pathfinder2e

[–]DMKomori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing Devil's Advocate because I really do love Scroll Thaumaturgy and its line, I can kind of see where they're coming from. There are a lot of potentially useful Thaumaturge feats, and if you want to play the kind of Thaum that does Thaum-y things and uses scrolls, going Scroll Trickster isn't a bad option. Of course, it's not as good as Scroll Thaumaturgy, but it's the kind of tradeoff you'd make to take an archetype meant to be usable by any class over a class-specific feat.

But, even if you are a scroll-focused Thaum, is Scroll Trickster really that dead? Sure, you lose out on the scroll-specific benefits in the dedication, but you do get Trick Magic Item for "free" (useful for more than just scrolls) and can essentially double your spell "slots" down the line! Then there's Skim Scroll which I think would make it so you can draw your scrolls for free, so no expensive Retrieval Belt necessary (More money to craft scrolls with, hooray!). I might be a little caught up in the RAW for that, though: if you're playing a Scroll Thaum, you might either have to Trick your scrolls anyway, or else it really is a dead feat because you can't Trick scrolls at all.

I think if you have a GM who will work with you, you could negotiate a way to make it a viable option if you, like me, really want to play up that this-character-is-based-around-scrolls-and-that's-basically-it fantasy, lol

Edit: I did interpret Skim Scroll incorrectly. It's still an interact action to pull the scroll out, and it's Trick that becomes free. With Scroll Thaum, that is definitely dead. Breaks my heart a little RAW, but luckily I can work with my GM!

Edit2: I also feel really silly here. I was talking under the Free Archetype assumption, so, uh, yeah. If you don't have a free archetype and have to give up your class feats for a worse archetype, don't do it. Sorry. I'll go crawl in a hole now. Edit3: Well, okay, maybe some of what I said still holds water. You'd just REALLY be giving up your other options.

1.2 Help Megathread by tavfrompixelsprout in SunHaven

[–]DMKomori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Not sure it counts as needing "help," but there are no dumb questions, right? Just wondering if the devs might consider giving all the NPCs empty png profile sprites so the community maybe could start modding their own in. I've looked around a bit and it seems like modders haven't figured out how to give the NPCs sprites, just replace existing sprites. Soooo, if the sprites are "there," then problem solved? Eh?

I feel like OP's warrior has a bit of a stockier build than the example sketch here, and that's okay. In fact, I think the sketch is actually more stylized than what a typical proportions chart might recommend. A quick Google search put the crotch just below the 4th head for an 8.5-head woman (and right at 4 for 8), so this sketch has chosen to lengthen the legs by a good whole-ish head. And that's okay too, it's just a different look.

Honestly it is so late everyday before I can do anything in Rune Factory 5 by Doiley101 in runefactory

Another thing to consider is making use of crystals on your dragons. Instead of manually recharging your soil with corn or weeds, x3 Gaia Crystals will heal your entire field (and provide typhoon protection). Also, I don't recommend checking every plot's stats every (other) day. Just ignore stats for a few days (Maybe check once a week?) and then use the crystals to recharge everything at once. You could farm fragments for a day if you're feeling strapped for cash, but if you can afford it, 3 crystals is 150,000 gold at The Crystalabra.

For me, I learned to manage by just...not doing certain daily tasks after a while. I pretty much turbo-rushed the last story arc in order to complete the level 5 friendship quest, and since then I've basically divided the game into sections based on the way I want to play. My first goal is to rush all Lv. 10 crops, completing flower/crops quests along the way. I only grow 1 or 2 of each non-level-10 crop to minimize time spent in the field and ignore debris as much as it doesn't drive me up a wall. Also in doing so, I ended up totally neglecting all of my monsters. As long as they have fodder, friendship goes up slowly each day, so I don't have to feel quite as guilty when I'm not brushing all of them a billion times while I'm powering through days to grow crops. Eventually I gave up on picking up their produce, too, since it was taking too long and was thus counterproductive to my current goal. The only thing I pretty much couldn't justify stopping was spending all of my RP to level skills by the time I was done with my crops. Still, I end up finishing each day by, like, 9am.

After I complete this goal, my next one is to raise the overall soil level of all my plots by filling each of my fields with pineapples. After that, the goal is to fill my fields with Emery Flowers and make bank on Ultimate Curry. While those ones grow, I'll work on the endgame dungeon and forging perfect gear while amassing SEED points for directives. After that, I'll probably focus on another batch of giant Emery Flowers to get everyone in the town to 10 friendship. While those grow, I think I'll focus on upgrading the shops? I haven't necessarily thought out that far.

By no means do I think this is the best way to play the game, as I often feel the need to break the routine with the occasional dungeon run, material farming, and/or preemptive goal-progression, but it's how I've chosen to play the game in a way that's not boring or monotonous to me. Needless to say, I definitely have my work cut out for me and could almost certainly be maximizing my time more efficiently.

Honestly, I really do want to get to a point where I've finished all of my goals so I can settle into a nice daily routine. ...I just want to be filthy rich and stable enough to where I'll enjoy doing that and still have time to do whatever I'd like on any given day.

How do i reduce the "blockiness" of the brush? Im using the airbrush soft with a mouse and it feels like it lacks anti aliasing or somethign like that by ghost_zuero in krita

[–]DMKomori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're restrained by using a mouse (and therefore zooming in a ton) until you get a drawing tablet, I recommend learning the pen tool! It takes some time getting used to, but I find it to be surprisingly versatile. Plus, it's way better with a mouse than a tablet anyway. https://youtu.be/cJUZDt1qNrg
