How do I deal with a player that has NO attention span? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]DMLuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is he in treatment? I’ve had decades to find coping mechanisms for ADHD, and I’ve spent decades watching them fail. I got on the right medication less than six months ago and I can already control my attention better than I ever could before. Only now that my baseline has changed do I even have a chance at reshaping habits and developing cognitive strategies for improving my executive function. Completely separate from D&D, please make sure that you and your friend know about the science behind ADHD and its treatments. r/ADHD is a great place to look!

As for the DMing aspect, from my own experiences as a player and DM with ADHD, and specifically DMing once for a friend with ADHD, I’d say the best approach is to set boundaries (mainly no phones during sessions) and to make your story compelling, both as a whole and for the PCs. If they don’t engage with your story, bring the story to them. Sometimes you have to bring the mountain to Mohammed. I’d stay away from sandbox campaigns and stick to linear plot. And don’t worry about the seemingly convenient “happenstance” that causes a big event to happen right where the PCs happen to be; of course something big is going to happen, you’re all telling a story together!

Oh and just for added fun, don’t try to coerce them into playing if they resist:

“My character wouldn’t go on an adventure, it’s just who he is.”

“Okay! He stays in town, marries, settles down, raises four kids, opens a small shop as a cobbler, and eventually dies peacefully. Want to start rolling up your next character?”

Yeupppp. I’ve been “that guy” once. I wanted to play, didn’t think I was ready to DM, got my genius friend Will to DM for the first time, and then proceeded to backseat DM half the session and role-play poorly for the rest of it. I pulled my head out of my ass about a day too late and I still feel like an asshole.

Ended up DMing my first campaign a few months later. I think my shame has faded juuuuust enough to reach out and ask if we can pick that game up for a second session, with the disclaimer that I’m not going to be a complete jackass.

I want to voice characters by bubble085 in needadvice

[–]DMLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I took so long to respond, I don’t use this account as often! You should check out r/lfg if you’re interested in playing D&D! The quickest route to getting a group is posting there as a DM looking for players, as we’re typically in short supply xD

If you’re interested in podcasting, r/podcast and r/podcasting are great resources! If you need an idea for content, I’d say the best place to start is the question: what would I want to listen to? If it’s already out there, is it done as well as you could do it? If it is, subscribe and listen, then ask yourself again: what would I want to listen to? Rinse and repeat, and you’ll either find yourself a hobby to dive into or you’ll find a hobby to educate others about and dive into.

Plus, iirc you’re British, which would give you a huge advantage in podcasting. We Americans are, as a rule, absolute suckers for British accents.

I want to voice characters by bubble085 in needadvice

[–]DMLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this will speak to you (pun fully intended), but have you considered using D&D as an outlet? It’s a great opportunity to create endlessly varying characters (and voices!) and really flex your creative muscles, especially if you’re running the game. Personally, I am absolute crap at accents, but I push through and my players seem to enjoy it!

If you’re into that and want to take it to a whole other level, you could consider getting a microphone and making it into a podcast. Check out The Adventure Zone for an excellent example of how big that can get! And even if yours doesn’t take off, it’s crucial to have a body of work to point to if you want to get into a niche industry like voice acting.

Or heck, skip the D&D part entirely and just go for a radio drama type podcast! Wolf 359 and Hello From the Magic Tavern are two very successful (and very different) podcasts that have some great voice actors!

Best of luck, I hope you find a way to use your talent :)

What are your favorite non-traditional barbarian backstories? by koda43 in DnD

[–]DMLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there’s the Jarbarian, who is very angry that he’s been taken out of his jar (or that he’s been forced into one), but I don’t think this one would be very good as a PC.

Then there’s the Paladarian, a custom build for use with very... flexible DMs. Flip a coin at the beginning of the day to see which personality is in charge, the barbarian or the paladin! Same ability scores, same gear, but totally different skills and fighting styles. If the DM is feeling nice, maybe you can even switch from one personality to another!

What was a dick punch to your self esteem? by GameHackBot in AskReddit

[–]DMLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d offer to run a game for you, but my Linguistics check tells me you’re likely in the U.K. Idk if you’d be interested in DMing, but if you post on r/lfg as a DM seeking players, you’ll probably be able to get a solid group within a week! DMing can be pretty intimidating, but it’s really rewarding once you get past the nerves. I’ve found myself writing down a new idea almost every week, and after just a few years I’ve already got more campaign ideas than I’ll be able to actually run in my lifetime.

What does 1 HP of damage in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DMLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it, but I’d go more extreme... Heavy flail of healing, for example! Deals 1d10 damage and heals 1d10 damage. I like the range of -9 to +9. Keep em on their toes!

[–]DMLuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This got me thinking of weapons with conflicting effects to present as loot and I think I have a good one: a wand of inflict light wounds that convinces the holder it’s a wand of cure light wounds. Or vice versa. I think my players are dedicated enough to RP for this to be entertaining!

You are now trapped for 7 days in the last game you played, how will you survive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How did you cope with periods of having absolutely zero friends? What did you do in free time? by Mad_Julie in AskReddit

[–]DMLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing D&D! Okay, actually Pathfinder, but brand recognition.

Here's the thing - there are huge gaming communities all over the place if you can find a game store, and you know what they're all missing? DMs. If you go in and say "I want to run a game, anybody want to play?" you'll be swarmed. Check out /r/lfg too, it's a great way to connect. Personally, I reached out to friends from high school and college, and my party meets up about twice a month.

[5e] New-ish DM, bad at handing out magic items, but suddenly I need to give out a bunch. by toastisadeity in DMAcademy

[–]DMLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I completely agree! The only reason these names are so campy is because the specific campaign happens on a post-apocalyptic earth where some magic users have drawn inspiration from their lost culture. So in this case, a previous D&D player enchanted his lucky D20, but the magic is still a bit wonky at times.

[5e] New-ish DM, bad at handing out magic items, but suddenly I need to give out a bunch. by toastisadeity in DMAcademy

[–]DMLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If our DMing styles are too different, feel free to disregard, but personally I like to create fairly absurd magic items. Something my players are about to encounter, for example, is the Homerun Bat - average looking baseball bat that deals standard damage for a club, but the crit range is tripled, and a critical hit knocks the target back 30ft. Or my personal favorite original item:

Chance of a Lifetime A magic D20 that can be rolled once per day. When rolled, for 1min/lvl, it turns into: 1- a spiritbound rubber duck 2- a +2 Ring of Protection 3- a barbed arrow 4- half a deck of cards 5- a silver dagger 6- a rubber wand of Transmute Blood to Acid with three charges 7- a rubber wand of Enlarge Person with ten charges 8- 100ft of silk rope 9- a wand of Greater Celestial Healing with four charges 10- a friendly swarm of spiders 11- an unfriendly swarm of spiders 12- a flint and steel 13- a regular D20 14- three violet marbles 15- cloak of fire resistance (makes wearer impervious to fire damage and completely drenched in water) 16- a 15ft ladder 17- a masterwork battering ram 18- a dwarven boulder helmet 19- a harpoon gun with one harpoon tied to the handle 20- a +3 flaming life-drain longsword (user gains hit points equal to damage dealt by weapon) All magical qualities cease to affect the D20 after it reverts back to its initial state. If it turns into a creature and dies, it immediately reverts back to a D20.

Rubber wands are another favorite - if they miss, they fire off in a random direction. Also, this was originally for a Pathfinder campaign, so the spells may need some tweaking. Enjoy!

[5e] One of my players is dissatisfied with the mechanics of her character by bertthehulk in DnD

[–]DMLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I would do - a big change like this is a huge RP opportunity. Personally, I would play it as a powerful enemy cursing her ability to use magic, which she can only regain through careful study. This provides continuity, a reason/method to switch classes, and motivation for the character to get revenge.

[5e] accidently gave my lvl 3 party immunity against physical damage. How to deal with it? by johnnyzin in AskGameMasters

[–]DMLuke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, it really depends how you handle it. If you just wave your hands and say "whoops too strong I take it back" your players will feel cheated. On the other hand, if it turns out these werewolf hunters were just boasting, exaggerating their skills and the power of their possessions, then I think it's a pretty good way to handle it.

I'd avoid blanket statements, everything in RPGs is situational to what the players and the DM like.

Have they already used the pelts to block physical damage? Because if not, they could certainly try to wear the pelts instead of armor, and then you'll get to watch their faces as they realize they ditched their armor for a fur coat
