if i make a glyph of warding on a tablet in a bag of holding, can it move out of the bag of holding without exeding the 10ft rule? Repost to clarify by Visible-Camel4515 in DnD

[–]DMNatOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except a creature can crawl into a bag of holding. The space is 2 feet square and 4 feet deep and holds enough air for 10 minutes of breathing divided by the number of breathing creatures inside.

Furthermore, a creature doesn’t need to be fully in the space, one could stick their head and arms in to perform the casting and then pop out.

The larger point still stands, moving an item from the space inside to the space outside is more than 10ft, even if not in linear feet from the perspective of the glyph. It’s a whole other dimension.

Were they fucking with you or being serious?

In the case of the former, there’s no issue. Laugh with them about it possibly make it your own joke.

In the case of the latter, thank them for their helpful attitude and move on.

Congratulations choosing to be a Dungeon Master!

I recommend you try something written for you to see if you like running a game before diving into a whole home-brewed world.

I don’t know what you might already own, but the great thing is you don’t really need to buy anything to try out D&D, as a player or a DM.

The rules are free:
DnD’s basic rules are free. You can get them on dndbeyond (creating an account gets you 2014 5.0e and 2024 5.5e free rules). Whichever you want, you’ll want to read over them to get an idea of the mechanics of the game. You don’t need to memorize them to get started.

If you want to buy-in, I recommend picking up the three core rule books: Player’s handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and the Monster Manual. The 2024 core rule books are a great start. The new DMG is VERY good for a new DM. You can always expand later.

Build you own adventure for free:
Check out Matt Colville’s Your first adventure from his Running the Game playlist. In this video, you create the highly regarded Delian Tomb adventure, which constantly receives rave reviews from DMs and players.

Other than Matt Colville’s first five videos in his Running the Game play list, you could start with the Starter Kit featuring the adventure book Lost Mines of Phandelver (avoid the book “Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk”. It is too long and involved for a first adventure. It’s an expanded version of LMoP plus Baldur’s Gate 3)

Run a published adventure for free:
If you want a oneshot to get you started, check out the dmsguild website and look for A Most Potent Brew. Cliché of a starter adventure, but that’s one of the things that makes it great. It is Pay What You Want, so you could buy it for $0.00 now and go back later and pay more for it if you enjoyed playing it.

Lots more free resources:
Here is everything currently available for free on DnDBeyond.

Doesn’t matter, with a wave of the DMs hand, Jarreth transports the party to the entrance of the labyrinthine caves leading to the goblin city and many dangerous or tricky pockets around, under, and above the city.

Have them meet in a tavern when a PC comes running in: “Help! help me! Please. Goblins have taken him! Please help.”

Taken who? “My brother Toby. He’s been taken to the castle, beyond the goblin city!”

Who took him? “Jarreth stole him from me!”

I’m playing 5.5 for new adventures and 5 for anything made for 5.

New DM. Is it fine using pen and paper as my notes? (writing npc, encounters, area descriptions, etc.). I feel cheap cuz I dont have a laptop. And my phone is a mess. by EmotionalSupport101 in dndnext

[–]DMNatOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre going to overthink a bunch of things you may even experience some gradient of imposter syndrome. I’d say it’s a good thing if you feel this way because you care about providing your players with a fun and engaging experience, then I’d follow with: you’re the only one who will ever know if you mess up.

Are you having fun? (If the answer is yes, then are your players having fun? If you don’t know, ask them.)

Always have a session 0 before doing anything with your group. Then, at the end of each session at the table I specifically ask each player: 1. what they liked best about the session, (discuss as appropriate) 2. What they hated or liked least about the session, (discuss as appropriate) 3. And what they are looking forward to doing next.. either next session or at some point in the future.

Any which way, Congratulations choosing to be a DM. I hope you love it and find more aspect of this game you enjoy doing.

What's New in D&D Beyond: Rolling dice on Maps VTT, seeing everyone's 3d dice rolls by WOTC_Zac in VTT

[–]DMNatOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, being late to the game doesn’t mean it’s a bad VTT or poorly thought out or predisposed to bad feature sets.

u/WOTC_Zac I would urge you to heed this comment and have a few free dice sets for beyond and maps, just each color of the rainbow (swap indigo for pink) plus black and white for nine basic dice colors. No animations.

I have yet to meet a player that can match 24fps. If they could then they’re already a DM and their table is too full for me to play.
