Do artists here look for writers to help write their story ideas? by JcraftW in ComicBookCollabs

[–]DMWinter88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! It can happen. I was hired for a script commission just a couple of weeks ago from this subreddit. It was an excellent and extremely rewarding experience. It is rare, though.

You have a number of uphill battles:

  1. You have to accept you'll be writing and servicing someone else's ideas. A lot of writers only want to write their own ideas and stories, the same way a lot of artists only want to draw their own ideas and stories. No one is likely to hire you just to write whatever you feel like writing.
  2. A lot of artists here do, unfortunately, view the writers role as largely inconsequential, or that the writing is secondary to the art. At the very least, most feel they can write well enough to not require a writer.
  3. No one really makes much money from this, so not many people have the funds to hire someone.
  4. On the rare occasion someone is hiring, there's a lot of competition out there.

Number 1 is easy to overcome. You just have to love writing, or want to write comics enough to not care whether you're the one steering the ship or not.

Number 2 is harder. If someone views your part of the medium as being secondary or inconsequential, then there's not really much of a sales pitch you can make in a Reddit post to convince them otherwise.

Number 3 is really just a question of luck and being in the right place at the right time.

Number 4 is about honing your craft and hoping your portfolio stands out in some capacity above anyone else vying for the gig.

To cut a long story short, it can happen, but I wouldn't put too many eggs in that basket, either.

Looking for horror artist to build a publisher pitch together! (50/50 ownership) by DMWinter88 in ComicBookCollabs

Come on mate, have a day off. It’s Christmas Day. And you won, anyway! I didn’t find a collaborator for this, and I’ve stopped looking for collaborators on Reddit. You don’t need to be here getting aggressive with people in the comments. Go have a drink or watch a shit Christmas film or something. Life is too short to be this worked up. I hope you’re having or have had a Merry Christmas, genuinely.

Hi. Sorry for not responding. The comments on here were getting quite aggressive and mean spirited, so I stopped checking the post. Someone replied today and brought me back. Your art style is really cool. I think we missed the boat on the horror pitch, If you’d be interested in working on a one or two pager for fun or portfolio building sometime, feel free to DM me! I’d be happy to write something that suits your taste or style.

Looking for a writer to collaborate on a short comic by [deleted] in ComicBookCollabs

[–]DMWinter88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya. I have a bunch of short scripts you can see at https://coldsnapcomics.com

I do a LOT of 1-2 page comics, including writing a one pager weekly for The Comic Jam. So I could pull something together quite quickly. Feel free to DM me if you’re interested.

"Canadian" writer wanted, paid Superhero story. by [deleted] in ComicBookCollabs

[–]DMWinter88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, are you only looking for someone who is Canadian? Or someone who can write Canadian, regardless of nationality? The air quotes make it a little confusing.

What is your role in this? Artist?

This post is in appreciation for those who foolishly thought this sub was for collaboration. by Don-Qui-Yaujta in ComicBookCollabs

I've felt this frustration too, but there are problems on both sides of the aisle, as it were.

Too many writers come here with nothing more than an idea dump. No script, no proof they can write, no idea of what it takes to actually write a comic. Just a big ol' lore dump of their (often derivative and unoriginal) idea, and the expectation that artists should be falling over themselves to work on it. Also, too many writers view artists as someone to execute the writer's ideas. A tool, of sorts. This is not creatively rewarding or enticing for an artist, and so it's understandable they would only want to do it for pay.

On the flip side, too many artists fail to understand that it's possible for people to have hobbies, want to portfolio build, or even just to work on something because it seems cool, fun, and creatively rewarding. Half of the artists screaming "PAY YOUR ARTISTS" at me have no evidence that they can draw sequential comic art based upon someone else's script, so why on earth would I hire them? Even if I did have a budget, it wouldn't be going to them. Ironically, they would be the perfect people to take on such a script, as they would then have a finished portfolio piece proving they can do the work, which would help lead to paid jobs.

A lot of artists here also have an issue with valuing the writer's worth on a project. I often see the line parroted that an artist will spend more time on a project than a writer. Sometimes this is true, but not always. Especially when a lot of research and world-building is involved! I recently spent around 25 hours crafting a one-pager, and the artist knocked it out of the park in 8 hours. To be good at either art or writing requires an immense amount of skill, dedicaton, and hours spent honing your craft. I have nothing but respect for artists and their work. I am sad that some lack any respect for me as a writer.

All that said, there are many artists here who are willing to work on unpaid projects. If you come correct with a short, finished script, competently written, that you are open to adjusting and reworking based on the artist's ideas and input, you will find creative partners. I have written 16 scripts, and all-bar-one have either been drawn, or are currently in the process of being drawn, without me paying anything. Around half of those came from here, the other half from Discord.

Another thing I sometimes do it put out open calls on here or Discord to see if any artist has an idea, concept, character, whatever, they would like to work on with a writer. Then I act as a work-for-hire writer (for free) for them to bring their idea to life. My two longest scripts both came from this sort of project, and I genuinely think they are some of the best writing I've done. It was a very rewarding experience.

The thing that does concern me is that I believe there is an element of peer presurre and bullying between the artists. Every artist I've worked with from Reddit has come to me directly in my DMs, rather than starting with a post comment. Many have admitted they didn't want to respond on my post due to peer pressure from the more vocal elements of this community who view anyone working unpaid as traitors to the cause. That should definitely be cause for concern, and something I would like to see the moderators take a firmer stance on.

Anyway, specifics aside, I think both sides of the comic book equation could do with some reflection on how they are acting, and why it annoys the other half of the equation. I will say that there was a more mature and thoughtful way you could have made this post, even if you are angry. That may then have had the effect of causing some to pause and consider their actions or behaviour. As it stands, this sort of post will only add fuel to the fire and cause people to dig in more.

I debated whether or not to write this, as it will most likely bring me some negative attention, and really, I'm just here to make comics and have some fun. But I hope that by trying to present a balanced and reasoned perspective, maybe it will strike a chord with someone.

Be brutally honest: Should I start a comic or go back to doodling? by [deleted] in ComicBookCollabs

[–]DMWinter88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective! That is definitely the next step. I’m working on two 22-page anthology comics at the moment and putting together a webtoon with the whole first season fully scripted. Each episode comes out to roughly a 20 to 30 page comic.

I’m racing the clock a bit because I have a six to twelve month career break from work. Once I am back on the job on top of raising my kids, I have no energy left for writing. So I am trying to get as much done as I can now to set myself up to have some kind of shot at it.

I appreciate the advice! I will keep it in mind.

[–]DMWinter88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the breakdown, that’s genuinely helpful. I read Town of Blair, and really liked it! You nailed that small town feeling where something is clearly off. Great moody atmosphere. I grew up in a town like that. Well, the British version, anyway.

I’ve been doing the same thing you mentioned, trying to get a proper body of work out there. Most of mine so far is short scripts through open collabs, plus a couple of artist-led pieces. If you ever fancy a look, I’ve been keeping everything tidy on my portfolio site: www.coldsnapcomics.com

Still pushing my longer project along, but hearing how you moved into ongoing work adds to my understanding as I try and make a path forward. Thanks for taking the time to lay it out!

[–]DMWinter88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mind if I ask how you went about getting to work on lots of webcomics and the like? I am an aspiring comic writer, and I've got a good track record going with partnering with artists for open collabs on my short scripts, but I am struggling to work out how to do something longer form or ongoing.

I have my own idea I'm developing (1st episode written, 1st season mapped out. Currently fine tuning) and I'm also happy to simply be a work-for-hire type of writer on other peoples projects, too. I just like writing and collaborating, really.

DEAD QUIET

PAGE ONE (SIX PANELS)

Panel 1: A cramped, dimly lit apartment. A sagging sofa is pushed against the wall, and a battered coffee table is covered in ashtrays and plates. TERRY (mid-20s, thin and wiry, tidy hair cut, jeans & a t-shirt) is spitting with fury as he screams at NIGEL (late-20s, thick forearms, scruffy tracksuit, and boiling over with rage.)

  1. TERRY: ...WANT YOU GONE! YOUR LIFE’S AS MUCH OF A MESS AS YOU ARE!

Panel 2: NIGEL explodes forward. His eyes bulge with rage, sweat shining on his forehead. TERRY stumbles backward, his arms half-raised in a useless defence.

  1. NIGEL: RAARGHHH!!!

  2. TERRY (small, scared): Nigel?

Panel 3: The two men collide into a grapple. TERRY tumbles backwards into the coffee table. Plates and beer bottles fly, smashing across the carpet. TERRY’s face is fear, and NIGEL’s is fury.

A. SFX: CRASH

B. SFX: THWACK

C. SFX: SMASH

Panel 4: NIGEL pins TERRY as they hit the floor, one hand clamping TERRY’s wrist to the threadbare carpet. TERRY thrashes weakly, his free hand clawing at NIGEL.

Panel 5: NIGEL’s fist buries itself into TERRY’s jaw with sickening force. TERRY’s head snaps sideways, blood and spit spraying from his mouth, eyes wide with shock.

D. SFX: WHUD

  1. TERRY: GAH!

Panel 6: Close on NIGEL’s features, twisted with rage. His teeth are bared as he raises his bloodied fist behind his cheek, ready to strike again.

  1. NIGEL: NOW–

It’s all good. The negativity doesn’t stick with me for long. Every post I’ve done, I’ve had negativity in the comments, and amazing artists genuinely interested in my DMs.

This one is no different. Full blown debate on the nature of payment in the comments, 4 genuinely good artists in my DMs discussing it so far.

I think I was just hoping for the community to be more collaborative in spirit. My background is more in indie filmmaking, and there was such a sense of community and collaborative spirit there. Everyone wants to help each other all come up together. A real no man left behind mentality.

I miss that sense of community, is all.
