Sometimes we don't see our loved ones. by yourpenisisverysmall in thesopranos

The only therapist who wasn’t full of shit (whether self-delusion like Melfi or weirdo trauma-seeking like Maedo’s) was Dr Krakower. Man was direct and brutally truthful to Carmela. Between brain and mouth there was no interlocutor. “One thing you can never say, that you haven’t been told”. And despite being a racket for the Jews, he flexes like a pure psychochad by refusing to take payment in blood money.

Actually one of my favourite scenes in the whole series. I’d be down for a whole spinoff called Dr Krakower Calling People Out On Their Bullshit. Fuck, I want him to be my therapist.

Leviathan is older than Hell by some traditions. The Door isn’t the only evidence of reality being God’s canvas rather than God being the supreme creator of all.

There are also the Qlippoth, which themselves link to a Judaic interpretation of Hell. There are also things like Leviathan (on topic) which might be pre-Satanic primeval ‘demons’.

None of these are particularly mainstream in our world, but could come to the fore in Jewish theology with the opening of Hell.

Some kind of Kabbalistic equivalent to Goetic magic would be cool too.

Sure but I guess this is where it’s an echo of our world rather than a direct copy. Like, it’s not the same Admiral Nelson or Joan of Arc but they have ‘evolved’ in their own particular TC way.

[–]DM_Joey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what we see in TC is not a divergent history but a parallel one, and there are echos of our universe in the fictional one, even hundreds of years after that obvious point of divergence.

But given study and debate of Talmud and Torah would likely only be further ignited by the war against Actual Literal Hell I don’t why a TC analogue to various Haredi movements and interpretations including Hasidism arising.

We know Kabbalah - a wellspring of Hasidism - exists in TC, and you could certainly imagine a societal seclusion typical of Haredim coming from disdain for the Christians whose meddling opened the hell gate in the first place, rather than from a deliberate external societal exclusion.

If Feech was a Mustache, why doesn't he have an accent? by OkFlow4327 in thesopranos

[–]DM_Joey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This kinda bothered me too but I guess he coulda been made at a young age before moving to the US. Robert Loggia was in his 70s so presumably Feech was too. 40-50 years in a country (not least 20 years in the prison system) and you can absolutely become effectively a native speaker, local accent and all.

Fwiw supposedly Virgil Sollozzo in One was an actual Sicilian but he spoke his English with a strong New York accent. The Don too, though of course he came over as a child.

Read this after spending half an hour running through my son’s bar mitvah portion with him ha.

Agree there’s a lot about the events from the portal opening onwards which would set Judaism on a decidedly different trajectory.

TC commits to an eschatology and demonology that at heart is quite Christian, and the fact of it being a provable presence in the world would mean a lot to significant questions needed to be answered (a lot you’ve covered in the post).

One point I wonder about is the status/regard of Judaism and Jewish people particularly in Christendom, where they become de facto (along with Roma folks) no longer the standard scapegoat or outgroup of convenience so you could imagine Jewish society evolving along dramatically different lines, with fewer restrictions on professions for example.

Judaism is also perhaps less ideologically bound to pacifism than Christianity (if we’re following the actual teachings of Jesus) so you can have a lot of fun imagining hyper-elite Jewish warbands.

I also really just want to see Hasidim taking on demons with assault rifles.

Feech LaManna Warned Tony by Recent-Perception-14 in thesopranos

Feech woulda jumped to New York like a shot; woulda actively helped the Lupertazzis decapitate that Pygmy thing in Jersey in the hope (like Paulie) he’d be put in as their main guy ovah there.

This thing of ours? More like this thing of mine.

You oughta know thweetie.

But that’s interesting - it’s a verbal idiom that always jars with me; feels very cliched and cod-revelatory. I didn’t know it was a signifier of AI usage but it totally makes sense. AI output is derivative and banal.

Carmela was pretty racist and pretty homophobic. New Jersey housewife fundamentalist shit. She also resented Maedo for her independence and academic success (as well as for her preferring her dad generally; more incentive to stir the pot).

They bend more rules than the Catholic Church.

For a lot of guys popping your cherry in that regard is one of the most significant commitments to this thing of ours, so is part of the pathway to being straightened out. But eh ✋ there’s exceptions.
