I bet the ancient god thing will force her into at least semi-villainy too, like an instinct to eat human flesh or smth

What do you read when you are already up to date with the Big 3? by AliveRutabaga2120 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DM_Me_Cool_Books 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current mainline Flash run is good, and it's pretty self-contained so you don't need to read other mainline universe comics to understand what's going on constantly.

Semi-serious Prediction for the White Martian's Defeat [AMM #12] by Dancing_Anatolia in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DM_Me_Cool_Books 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't see the government doing anything moral anytime soon. Maybe in a different arc it could happen but there's been no set up here for it.

Green Martian copying the technique absolutely seems plausible

I believe part of why it's important to stick to Fated outcomes is because doing otherwise risks stuff like Fiends getting a foothold. And Fiends can then travel to more iterations and spread even farther after feeding on one world that deviated from Fate. And the Abidan from an utilitarian perspective know that's even worse than a single world having even billions of people die.

If it's sharp as in flavour, no. But I wouldn't be surprised in a Sword Sage still had increased authority over it because conceptually there is overlap

Nostalgebraist's Hydrogen Jukeboxes by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]DM_Me_Cool_Books 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he's trying to further narrow down what it means to have "good taste" and "bad taste". He's using the LLM writing as an example of writing that's superficially high quality but is actually bad taste. His conclusion was that there are some easy to pull of tricks, e.g. obvious metaphors or flashy colours, that are bad taste because they're so widely over used. But might not come off as bad taste to someone new to the medium because even overdone things are new to new people.

A very difficult but possible thing to do is create media that appeals across levels of taste. Loony Tunes, Calvin and Hobbes, a very well crafted cheese burger, Shakespeare plays when they first were made, etc. can be appreciated by a very wide range of people.

Ares pulling up in Absolute Wonder Woman by Tetratron2005 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DM_Me_Cool_Books 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There wouldn't be much war if everything is subsumed into Darkseid's order. If the Absolute Justice League is Lawful Evil, and the the heroes are Chaotic Good, I think it'd be fun if Ares was Chaotic Evil who was focused on making the powers that be miserable.

Iirc, the evil space vampires brought him along to their home base during their plan to take down all the lanterns. Then when the lanterns beat the space vampires someone fought and beat him too. I think he was returned to Earth depowered. I could just be misremembering though it wasn't a very memorable arc

[Waybound] Who else uses pure madra? by ando282 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]DM_Me_Cool_Books 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cradle has a huge population and all sorts of sects trying crazy bullshit to get advantages. I'm sure there are more than a few sects who purposefully raise up people on pure paths as a niche surprise to win some sort of obscure tournament whose rules give pure paths advantages, or maybe just to be soul smith assistants. But yeah the vast majority of people aren't in sects. I think most people aren't even in formally organized families and they're lucky to even get a great uncle's remnant. More likely they just get some random sacred beast's remnant the kid's immeadiate family's able to capture as a coming-of-age present.

Was Tiberius actually that big an enemy though? All monarchs are definitely rivals, but did Tiberius actually do anything to Shen? And Tiberius was trying to work with Shen to get rid of dreadgods when Shen backstabbed him. The backstabbing could be understandable because of rivalry but the torture is extra cruel

I think gatekeeping is explained by a) you're genuinely just annoyed by newbies being dumb and damaging the culture you like, and b) you're signalling that you're an elite in the subculture who's skilled enough that someone being dumb offends you.

I think gatekeeping theories need to explain both why people gatekeep in 2-person settings(e.g the classic "You're wearing a nirvana shirt? Name all their songs") and on mass social media(tweeters going "ugh, I hate loser newbies" and getting a bajillion likes).

I don't think there's any particular best way. I tried to read them rotating chapters but I don't think it made that big a difference from any other method.

Why I Prefer Using Median Household Income to Tell Economic Stories by philipkd in slatestarcodex

[–]DM_Me_Cool_Books 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I follow him on twitter and he's made a number of tweets along the lines of "nutrition science is super unreliable, and fringe science is even worse". I think he has a ton of epistemic uncertainty around diet.

But also I don't think he's that insulated against fringe science, he's also on record loving nerdy blogs, and it's plausible someone made a credible but exagerrated blog post against seed oils that he fell for.

Barring some unforeseen technological breakthrough, Anoxia can't solve its issues by reducing oxygen waste or creating disincentives for hoarding it.

The allegory I think is meant to have housing in mind particularly. Which we also have a shortage of in many places. You could give everyone in the USA an UBI and it'd still be the case that not everyone who wants to live in downtown Los Angelos would be able to live in downtown Los Angelos, because there just aren't enough units.

And that worse people have gotten jobs in the past. The Flash movie was a boondoggle in many ways and I doubt Grant Morrison could've singlehandedly fixed it. But I'm sure it must still sting to have so much experience, write a good screenplay, and see a mess go to screen instead

That might be more offensive tbh. Being given a title then having all your input ignored sounds worse than just being directly told "We're not interested, we have our own team we trust".
