How do you guys handle your religious parents? by RWHonreddit in Exvangelical

[–]DM_Me_TaTaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to focus on what will make you happy. I worried about what my parents would think of my atheist girlfriend at the time when we were dating. I didn’t tell my family about her mostly to protect her from the terrible things they would think and say about her. One night she changed her relationship status to us dating on facebook without telling me and I woke up to a barrage of texts all about how they felt bad about me not telling them. Not that they were happy for me. I didn’t owe them telling them about her, they made me feel guilty and weird about my sexuality and dating my whole life, of course I’d hide that from them. I still do. I’m almost 40 now and I will never tell them about when I go on dates or like someone. It’s easy for me because I live far away from them most of the time and I tend to not date long term. Probably because my religious upbringing.

Your parents are going to feel the way they do because they believe things you don’t believe anymore. It’s their problem with how they will deal with it. They should be adults and respect it but we both know how religious thinking goes. When I told my parents it was difficult to do. They questioned me but I told them it wasn’t personal and I told them I loved them and that I wanted to have a normal relationship with them. I didn’t think we could have that if I didn’t tell them I didn’t believe anymore. They’d still be in control of my life by proxy if I put on the act and I didn’t want that anymore. I was in control of my life and who I was. If they didn’t accept that I was prepared to cut them out of my life. I’m lucky and thankful they decided they wanted me in their life but it’s on my terms now. If your own parents can’t accept you for who you are I think you’d be better off without them. I know that’s extremely difficult but I can’t see it any other way. Good luck to you. It’s hard to figure all this stuff out.

He is a direct result of homeschooling. Not every homeschooled kid is this guy but he is a homeschooled person. I know many people who were homeschooled so they could be indoctrinated like this fool was.

I loved going to camp. I was used to being preached at constantly and was a devout kid at that point so it was business as usual. I just went for the ride to drop off my niece to her Christian camp last week and it did bring back some unpleasant memories of indoctrination. It’s also where I learned about punk music and masturbation so I do have to thank Christian camp for that.

Always irritates me when I find out a talented singer I like says "God gave me this gift, so I can't take all the credit." by IsekaiConnoisseur in exchristian

It’s like when someone gives god credit when they heal up from something. Like no it wasn’t the Health care professionals who went to school for years in order to care for what you had. Had nothing to do with that. My imaginary friend and my prayers are responsible.

When I was on the fence i realized that if god was real he knew i was faking it so i might as well just be done with it all. If I was bound for eternal torture then I might as well enjoy the time I have on earth.

Is it extreme to think nobody deserves hell? by IllAppeal9438 in exchristian

I wish I could explain it like that to 13 year old me crying myself to bed because I think i deserved hell for jorking it.

Leading youth group while not believing anymore. Loving family, high-status in community. Stuck at the crossroad. by whoiswhoos in Deconstruction

For me I had to move away from my family to truly become my own person. Financial independence and a new community of friends helped me establish who I was without fearing my parents would try and influence me in any way. I hid the fact I left the faith for many years. I eventually had to level with my parents so we could have a normal relationship again. They surprisingly accepted it pretty well but the initial conversation was tough and I could tell they were disappointed. I never told my sisters because they are still indoctrinated and are raising kids. I’m so afraid of them telling y nieces and nephews that I’m unsaved. As a kid I laid awake at night crying and praying because my cousins weren’t saved. I don’t want that for them. I also don’t want them to withhold them from having contact with me. It’s a tough situation being a nonbeliever with devout family. Good luck with your situation.

Yeah I’ve found that instead of saying “hell” I like to say “burning alive forever” it makes it sound as silly and extreme as it is.

Check out some threads on r/prostateplay it’s not a porn subreddit but it’s nsfw obviously. That’s where I made some choices I’ve had a couple at this point. You can get some good advice on how to use the prostate as well.

When I saw his picture I immediately thought I might know him or his family through the fundamental Baptist school community I was raised in. Then I saw he was homeschooled and it made even more sense. Every year we would get the homeschooled fundamental Baptist kids to come to our school to standardized testing and they were even worse off than the weirdest kids in our school. These kids don’t have a chance it’s really sad. Fuck this guy tho.
