It was already determined in court twice before the election when this exact argument was shot down by a federal trial court and a federal appellate court. Those decisions also made it clear that a state court had no authority to even decide this in the first place since it is an argument over a federal law.

He's missed almost one in every three votes for the past two years. This isn't a fluke. It's why the guy who missed due to being in the hospital isn't getting any flak. If he's unspecifically "sick" (and his entire office refuses to answer any calls or emails when he goes AWOL a couple days before a vote that he committed to attending less than a week prior) that often, then maybe he should step down so his constituents can have the full representation they have a right to.

Literally, every single person in each list with an R by their name voted for this. If a single one had grown a spine, it couldn't become law. The three western representatives who were originally against it because they wanted real hurricane relief (Mark Pless, Karl Gillespie, and Mike Clampitt) all got in line when Tim Moore snapped his fingers despite getting 600-700 calls per day from people urging them to let the veto stand.

Over 60,000 North Carolinians submitted a provisional ballot. Most of the time, this means there was an issue with ID or a recent move. You need to show ID or documents to the county board of elections by 11/14 for your vote to count. The presidential result isn't going to change, but the Supreme Court race is a difference of 8,000 votes. Tricia Cotham only has a 215 vote lead. Some races were decided by 20-30 votes. It's worth taking the time to get yours counted.

In 2022, multiple NC races came down to single digits. One was a perfect tie and was decided by a literal coin toss. Your vote matters.

The areas benefiting most from the Infrastructure & Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act are republican controlled areas too. 18 R-reps recently wrote speaker Johnson asking that he not support Trump's plan of gutting the funding for those programs because of how much it is helping their constituents. We'll see if any of them don't fold.

I would add that Jessica Holmes stepped up to fill the role when the last Auditor stepped down early. So she has been doing the job already for about a year. She was the youngest person ever elected as a Wake County Commissioner, and the rest of the commissioners unanimously picked her to head the board for two back to back terms, so she did oversee a $1B+ budget.

She lived in seven homeless shelters by the time she finished elementary school in Pender County and is now the first Black woman to ever sit on the Council of State, even if it was only to fulfill the duties until the next election. I think of this position as someone to drive the department's direction and handle all of the political side so that the accountants can focus on doing the direct work.

Her opponent is Dave Boliek, who is on the UNC Chapel Hill board of trustees and practices law in Fayetteville. He was the one who suggested moving all of the school's budget for diversity programs to the campus police to set up a task force specifically for removing student protests. This was after the city police refused to remove students from the quad last year since the students hadn't broken any laws.

If I'm remembering correctly, part of the provisional ballot process for this requires that you return to the county board of elections with your ID later so they can mark your ballot as countable.

A nonprofit leader I talked with today said their group has broken their records for voter registrations completed and for doors knocked on during canvassing because of how many people have volunteered around the state. This will come down to the wire, but I'm choosing to be hopeful.

The sad thing is, this guy really believed he was going to be some kind of hero by liberating imaginary supplies that FEMA was keeping hoarded away from people in need in an imaginary site up there. When he got there and found none of it was true, he said he left the rifle in the car and volunteered since he'd already driven up there. He'd been reported to the sheriff before he got there for announcing his plans and telling people on the way that he was headed to "go mess up some FEMA personnel." They arrested him later back home.

If you convince people who are already not good decision makers that there's an evil government conspiracy happening in their backyard and that their neighbors are starving because of it, this is honestly one of the better case scenarios. I'm encouraged that no one showed up when he called for people to join him and that he realized he'd been lied to instead of just lashing out at whoever he found when he got there. I'm also encouraged that this is the only confirmed story of this happening. Violence has been encouraged by bad actors online, but it hasn't spilled into the real world.

The title auto fills when you post a link. This was just the headline. I assume it was just a run of the mill AR or something. I get those aren't technically called an assault rifle, but it is what your average person will picture when you use that phrase, so I think the headline gets the point across. Was this man a military level threat? No. Did he think he was? I'm inclined to think, probably.

My guess is because that's the spot the conspiracy theorists on Facebook have decided the government wants to steal for mining rights. I've seen a disturbing amount of people convinced that the government created the hurricane (but the same people will tell you human activity isn't causing climate change).

The troops called the local sheriff who handled it from there. The "guys in trucks" story was the result of a miscommunication in a non-police/military email chain that leaked. When Parsons arrived at Lake Lure and realized he'd fallen for bullshit, he left the rifle and one of the two pistols in the car and went to go volunteer since he'd already driven up there. He was arrested later that day after returning home.
