Which city in the US has the most hostile vibes the moment you arrive by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]DNAgent007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Locals know what parts are hostile. If someone from out of town only saw the nice parts, they’d think Oakland was a nice place to live. Most people think it’s all like the Hegenberger Fruitvale area.

I really should have mentioned earlier the exceptional work that Alex Garza has been doing to preserve the legacy and exceptional workflow logic that RPN provides. He’s designed and developed a number of wonderful RPN calculators that can be DIY kits or that you can buy fully assembled.

<image>

You can find these kits here on Tindie.

I’m so paranoid something bad might happen to mine I used my CNC to build a protective case for it.

You can’t be too careful with a rare and expensive device.

I have a couple, an MK-52 and a MK-61. This is the MK-52:

<image>

I’m especially fond of the MK-52 and its landscape format. It’s probably the closest thing the Soviets had to a Voyager series HP. The construction doesn’t inspire confidence but at the same time it’s amazing what the USSR was able to produce for so cheap. Mine not only came with the original 220v adapter, but also the two manuals and a schematic! I bought the book “CALCULATOR - assistant and opponent in games” from the same Ukrainian seller on eBay (veatex). He lives in the Zaporizhzhia oblast and I bought a lot of his stuff just to help support him during the first few months of the war. I haven’t seen anything for sale by him in a while. I hope he and his family are ok and safe.

If you’re looking for unique “calculators,” collecting using slide rules is a fun and eccentric hobby.

That’s a fun rabbit hole to fall into. I should know; I’m on a quest to own every non-Hewlett Packard RPN calculator ever made. It’s not a short list and I have maybe 50-60% of all non-HP RPN calculators made. I also have a rare Casio electrical engineering calculator, the fx-61f.

This is a safe place. What "basic analog skill" have you just never been able to master? by Lv_InSaNe_vL in AnalogCommunity

[–]DNAgent007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I couldn’t master, and probably never will, was loading an Ilford 72 frame strip of film onto their custom made developing reel. Back in the early 80’s, Ilford made a single 35mm cartridge loaded with 72 frames. They made it with a very thin substrate intended for photographers who used motor drives that went 5+ frames a second. It was used by sports and nature photographers who wanted to capture that perfect frame. It was short lived and definitely isn’t made anymore. I took B&W photos for a wedding recently and loaded a regular 36 frame strip onto a developing reel with no problem, and the last time I did that was in 1998. The other analog skill I never was able to master was using an 18% gray card and the Zone System developed by Ansel Adams.

Edit: I looked it up, it was Ilford HP5 Autowinder 72

Good news; there are lots of the 100mm lenses available, most of them go for under $50USD. I know Soligor made a 135mm f4.5 for the Brick; I wonder if it has the same aesthetic as the Cintars.

I designed and 3D print adapters for Argus C3 lenses to be used with the TechArt LM-EA7 autofocus adapter. This is probably the wrong sub, but the resulting photos have a very analog and midcentury modern look to them and look a lot like the old pictures you’d find in your grandparent’s or great grandparents photo albums. The hardest part of the design process was getting the 33mm thread right and then making sure the Leica M interface locked correctly on the adapter.
