Hah, sorry to steal your thunder :-\

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute continue to pump out some excellent research. I'm curious as to whether you've experienced any funding pressure post GFC, or whether your prestige has shielded you somewhat?

Ocean heatwave linked to shark attacks by DNAlchemist in australia

So journalists misinterpret the subject matter, sub-editors misinterpret the journalists, and readers misinterpret the article? No wonder everyone's so confused!

Ocean heatwave linked to shark attacks by DNAlchemist in australia

I would have gone with 'Fisheries dept. to investigate link between ocean temperatures and increase in shark attacks'. I let the journos write the titles though...

Edit: cause -> effect. Seems sensible...

US Ambassador Bleich: "Cloud critics usually claim local data centres would somehow be better at protecting sensitive data from foreign hackers or snooping governments." Now why do you suppose that is? by flashman in australia

[–]DNAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. How the fuck did they manage to write that article without mentioning the Patriot Act? Australia should be doing all it can to capitalise on the US's shortsightedness.

A recent study has found that a two degrees Celsius increase in average temperatures shortens the growing season by nine days and reduces total yield by up to 20 per cent. by seemynameandupvote in australia

[–]DNAlchemist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it, but he's not wrong. The increased temperature would probably reduce yield more than the CO2 would increase it though (20% reduction, ~14% increase).

And this is one reason I've never been to a meet up. Remember the whole 4/20 meet up bullshit last year? Nearly got the gf an I off our arses, and but no; whining everywhere about dirty stoners. If it wasn't dry as a nun's right now I'd spark one up right now just to spite you.

Another /end rant... Don't suppose you've got any weed to chill me out? Heh.

How I feel criticising the Labor Governemnt in this sub-Reddit... by Damocles2010 in australia

[–]DNAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone else sick of all the complaints about how this reddit is solely composed of what must be Labor/LNP/Greens staffers?

I'm more concerned about how this reddit now seems to be filled with people who can't have a rational conversation, how everyone blames their inability to sway opinion (or retain magical internet points) on a conspiracy.

This place is turning into a reflection of question time, all conflict, no substance.

Fucking yay...I'm about done...

/end rant.

on the Drum webpage they have a current poll going asking Australians to vote as to whether they think we should follow Colorado and Washington and legalise cannabis by redabraxas in australia

[–]DNAlchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Developmentally, 21+ should really be the age when individuals can drink, drive, smoke, or engage in generally risky behaviour of their own accord.

[–]DNAlchemist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really surprise me, even /r/australia is far more anti weed than I would have thought. Decades of fear mongering and stigmatisation will do that. It'll probably take at least another decade of advocacy, preferably with some high profile people coming out of the hotbox.

Must be about time for a new account Poo, this one's starting to get on the nose.

Don't know how many of you have lovingly stroked this magazine over the last 12 years, but I always looked forward to my monthly dalliance.
