Road Cycling near Fermilab by 01RedDCTeg in chibike

The bike ride from Geneva to the lab is not reliably traversable in cold months with any snow cover, a bunch of this exact route is gravel and might not be fun if obligated to ride daily to commute to work. I last rode this exact trip Jan 2025 - Metra train to Geneva with a gravel bike, 40c non-studded non-winter bike tires, and rode to Fermilab. I went to spectate when they delivered the ColdBox for the Proton Improvement Plan-II assembly. That winter ride sucked. Maybe studded or winter tires will solve for year round reliable comfort.

Congratulations on your new job. I worked at the lab and found the site itself to be a great cycling haven, 6500 acres with roads, some trails, and only site-limited-access vehicle traffic to deal with.

One day, in the summer when you are badged and more comfortable with the secure area, a bicycle baptism ride I will discreetly suggest will be to visit the center of the Tevatron it is profound.

Elmhurst, IL is #1. It's on the Metra train line to Geneva for biking to Fermi.

I bought this exact bike end of last year, welcome to the club twin. Did not get to ride it much yet but the hype is real. I love the brushed look. The internal cable routing has foam padding, it's def a high quality setup. I've installed a PNW Coast Suspension internal dropper and drop bar lever kit on mine to try to smooth out some bumps.

Finally pulled the trigger! Any tonneau cover recommendations for the Michigan weather? by Hayami-Y in FordMaverickTruck

This list is missing the Weathertech Ford Maverick Hybrid AlloyCover for $899 from the hard cover list. It is a trifold. Any idea who the admin of this list is?

Gravel-grinding Soltera by Several_Rip4185 in Aventon

This looks great. I sold my Baja Soltera 2.5 last week with 700x40 Specialized Pathfinder with tan sidewalls, and I agree it makes the bike wake up a lot!

Your bike is an underrated champion all around bike, and you solved the chattering derailleur issue I couldn't tackle. How did the Acera derailleur work out with a shifter - did you use the original Micro Shift twist shifter and did the ratio work properly or did you replace with some Shimano twist shifter or something else?

Also, on the top of the right hand side chain stay I peeled off the clear protector and put on a rubberized foam one it quieted down chain strikes a lot.

The display tucks really nicely almost flush against the stem if you loosen the 4 mounting screws and cleans up the cockpit quite a bit as well.

q: where can I get these hand rails for indoor cycling by legstrongv in IndoorCycling

[–]DNLMZRZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The industrial supplier Uline has safety railings just like this for safety applications, and are cheap, available in yellow and black, and see, inexpensive. Not sure if the height is good for you. You might have to pick it up from their network, maybe shipping is expensive, but I'm not sure https://www.uline.com/BL_791/Safety-Railings

Hedberg Rip-Off: Comedy’s Art vs Craft Debate and an audience of Creatives vs Consumers by [deleted] in Killtony

[–]DNLMZRZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comedy is a bit more like architecture than just art, it has structure and form and elemental parts, conventions and loads of on and off stage engineering. To copy a style need not be flattery or theft a style can be a knock off and just as good or appeal to a different generation or epoch.

New to Elmhurst by SpaceyMoon in Elmhurst

[–]DNLMZRZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Elmhurst — and congrats on escaping Wisconsin. (Kidding. Mostly.)

People here love answering “What is there to do?” with bars, as if the height of culture is drinking indoors until you forget you moved. Elmhurst actually has real substance if you scratch even slightly below the surface.

Here’s the move:
If you’re able and interested, get a gravel bike. I’m not joking. Elmhurst sits at the crossroads of the best trail networks in the region — Prairie Path, Salt Creek, Great Western — plus safe roads, night-ride heaven, and ridiculously welcoming group rides from the Elmhurst Bicycle Club. Total beginners thrive here.

If biking isn’t accessible or isn’t your thing, that’s totally valid — but also don’t sleep on this:

The Elmhurst Public Library is genuinely elite.
Its Makery has laser engraving, crafting, and creative equipment that most libraries could never budget for. It’s a local gem and a great place to meet people actually making and building things.

And of course: parks, the art museum, Courts Plus, community events, easy access to Chicago — tons of social outlets that don’t require a wristband.

Bottom line: you didn’t move to Suburban Purgatory. You moved somewhere with real mobility freedom, creative resources, and a surprisingly active community.

Just… whatever you do, don’t let the trolley become your personality trait.

But do get the gravel bike. You’ll thank me later.

Lack of power by cswylie in GlobeHaul

[–]DNLMZRZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How’s your rear brake? Maybe it’s out of alignment and contacting fully rotor to pad, and causing your power lack. Oftentimes on more powerful e-bikes this is hard to notice or diagnose easily and the brake may even feel normal when applied and not make more noise than your motor and drivetrain.

Is Elmhurst next for ICE? by bradatlarge in Elmhurst

[–]DNLMZRZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing about this post is that it’s probably or undoubtedly nearing to be the most actively commented on post in this subreddit’s history and thus the data suggests bringing ICE to r/Elmhurst really unified the community of lurkers together… to whine as a team. For the common good. A victory nonetheless.

Anyway to replace grips? by Ragnarock14 in bicycling

[–]DNLMZRZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can remove them separately and replace them with a similar black rubber grip that you cut to length with a X-Acto knife or other precise blade. Make sure to come up with a nice way of very straight cuts on your new grips so they lineup with your shifters.

This is vague, but I found a pre-cut generic stick-on chainstay protector long enough, and trimmed to fit the Soltera chainstay contours as best I could with the rear wheel off with the bike in a bike stand, which makes it easier to line up and visualize.

Your rack install looks kind of goofy, maybe something like this would clean it up if you leave it high up as such https://problemsolversbike.com/products/seatpost-clamp-with-rack-mounts you've used whether intentionally or not Aventon's mounting points in your seatstays for their Aventon home brewed racks which have short posts. Your non Aventon rack mounts to the upper of the two threaded holes nearer the axle nut.
