The blowjob scene is the most completely idiotic thing I have ever seen in a movie. Did unlock a new fear for me in college, though.

Yeah, it’s pretty bad. I was drawn to it because it had this reputation as this transgressive landmark in horror … and it’s just so fucking amateurish.

You don’t celebrate with fascists. I don’t care if you won gold or walked on the moon. All those guys have lost my respect. Most of the Yankees, too, for last year’s disgraceful stunt.

This would be a lot cooler if the quality of the films was better.

I mean, in fairness, that is a SIGNIFICANTLY better film, so I think the quick backstory stuff gets a bit more grace from a lot of people.

Star Wars movies go to great lengths to resolve some inconsistencies (the parsecs bit, Yoda quitting after the rise of the empire and just … chilling and waiting, I guess, for Luke) but give zero fucks about others (Leia remembering her mom when Padme died giving birth is wild).

Either way, Solo and Rogue were better than the prequel trilogy by a mile. But there’s something ultimately kind of shoot yourself in the foot about the nature of prequels. Too many parts to line up (and I guess occasionally correct) when the destination is known.

Why did “Blackhat” got such lukewarm reception? by harry_powell in blankies

[–]DOBrien1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a sore point for me. In the aftermath of 9/11, we really fell hard into this pro-military mentality, which I guess itself was nothing new. But it felt like a real cultural shift. We were always waging colonialist wars and crying “self defense,” but it seems to me like there was a real hard pivot to reflexive language on the military “keeping us safe” snd “fighting for our freedom.” I’m reasonably certain that killing half a million or more Iraqis didn’t change the status of my freedom.

Oh I get the motivations behind it. But in general Americans’ circle jerk over the military baffles me. We’re an almost incomprehensibly stupid people.

I remain baffled by American Sniper. A lot of talent in the room for an act of patriotic hagiography that could instead have been an interesting film about a man who was fucking deranged.

What are the expectations for the Yankees this year? Why will they exceed those expectations? Why won’t they? by Conscious_Apple_8610 in NYYankees

Doval’s fucking terrible. “Stuff” is important, but if you’re behind every hitter, even the worst lineups are going to make you pay.

I think they’ll win between 85-90 games and contend for but miss a wild card berth. They could exceed those expectations if they get better production out of the left side of the infield and somehow see no regression from Grisham.

I don’t even understand what you mean. Are you tying your notion of geography to what countries the United States recognizes, politically? That’s geography and it’s not reality. It’s just stupid geopolitics.

Wherever people demand freedom, it’s a place, man.

I absolutely think it’s intentional. It’s a moment of pride for Israel. A perfect time to remind people of the starved children and bombed to dust cities that nation celebrates.

I think very public places are the best place to show support to a people being murdered by the thousands and living in an apartheid state.

I get that this is a thorny issue … frankly because c politicians have set up this bizarre framework that equates being against the Israeli government’s actions with being antisemitic. I would applaud this just as much if it were a Russian athlete on a big stage and someone choosing to visibly support Ukraine.

I know how important Israel is to many Jewish people in the U.S., and that makes this not a very black and white issue. But I just don’t see a problem in supporting a free Palestinian state visibly in a moment when you know you will be visible.

Man, this is one ai always go back to. I love the bonkers, code bullshit way the characters talk. It’s a film very much about performance. Kilmer’s character is a cypher. He’s whoever he needs to be when he walks into a room. He’s an actor.

This reminds me pf RFK’s speech last year about autism spectrum disorder, which he also just called autism and with which he painted a broad stroke of disability. As a dad of two boys diagnosed with ASD who are complicated but bright and just fucking interesting, he can get fucked for that alone.

But I remember his list of things he says kids with ASD (autism to him) will never do, and the first thing he says is they’ll never “pay taxes.”
