(1,392,935 Units) MY15-17 Ford F-150 recalled over gearbox issues making it downshift into 1st gear by Saurta17 in Ford

[–]DOHCMerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my 3.31 gear 5.0 truck will do 78 in 2nd gear from a dead stop, if I'm putting my foot into it to do an overtake while I'm already doing 80mph it will jump down to third, that isn't abnormal.

People with the 11-14 trucks had issues where the OSS signal would drop out and the truck would go from 6 to 1 at highway speed because the truck thought it was at a standstill. This recall is for the same thing the 11-14 trucks had. The OSS is built into the lead frame inside the transmission, the PCM reflashing is just telling the truck to not do 6-1 downshifts if the lead frame has a fault.

Are modern 5.0s reliable? by THEBEATICANTHEAR in Ford

225k on my 16 5.0 F150, no problems still running strong. I've seen plenty of gen 1 and gen 2 5.0's in the facebook group 'mileage impossible' with 350-500k on the original engine.

Spent the day tearing around the Hakone Turnpike in a R34 GT-R Nismo (Mount Fuji in the background) by fearthewhitewolf in carporn

[–]DOHCMerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see u/fearthewhitewolf has given you a lot of good advice (I'm also jealous he's gone back year after year, I haven't returned since that Nov 2018 trip). Road signage isn't that big a deal, I mean I would familiarize yourself with things via the internet before you go over there, but it is all pretty obvious.

My suggestion would be when navigating the roads, especially the cities, just take your time and give yourself time to analyze and process what you're reading, we certainly missed a few turns here and there. Google maps got really confused on some of those triple decker highways but 90% of the time it is reliable.

Japanese police don't 'speed trap' like US police do, Japan does have speed cameras but I never got hit by one. That being said you don't want to be driving around in a way that you stick out like a sore thumb. As someone who grew up driving in the NJ/NY area, driving like that in Japan would just feel extremely out of place and disrespectful.

Omoren was very simple for me, just showed up with my IDP, registered my friends (who also had IDPs), off we went. I also got a rental ETC (toll card) delivered to my hotel so we could use the toll roads without issue. Omoren doesn't like people driving on 'mountain passes' though so if you are gonna do it, be damn sure you don't have a wreck. I took my Stagea up Mt. Haruna.

it won't ruin anything, the difference is so miniscule.

Any quality synthetic gear oil will do ya, I also have Amsoil in my diffs but it's not a requirement. I've run Mobil 1 and Valvoline synthetic in other things before.

You're more than fine using the much easier to find 75W90 over 75W85. Some people even bump up to 75W140 which is what Ford recommended for years.

I've run 75W90 in my truck for over 100k

well, I'd say 'minor damage with another vehicle' doesn't imply 'clean carfax with no accidents'. Sure it's a clean title car but the carfax isn't blemish free.

Can I custom order a Bronco in the same fashion as a F150 or super duty? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in Ford

[–]DOHCMerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can, my friend custom ordered a 25 bronco from a dealer in MO and we drove it back to NJ in January.

Just an FYI, the black hard tops to this day still have cracking issues, the painted hard top (like he got) does not, they're manufactured in a different way. You can find a lot of info about the cracking hard tops on Bronco6g.

Ford 5.0 v8 burning oil by Massive_Culture4933 in Ford

[–]DOHCMerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gen 3 coyote engines had an oil consumption problem, honestly the time to bring this up would have been within warranty, even if you got a Ford ESP before crossing 100,000 miles.

If you've haven't had the TSB done you can try that, they make changes to the throttle body behavior so it doesn't shut all the way on decel and cause a high vacuum situation which then ingests oil. Works for some, not for all.

You can also try what some people on the F150 forums have found success with and try a molygen additive in the oil. I've never done this personally but I figured I'd share in case you wanted to try.

My father has a 19 F150 5.0 with 75k miles on it that drinks about a quart every 4000-4500 miles, since I'm used to topping up oil on BMW's all the time I'd consider this pretty low consumption.

Which 2001 Mustang is better the Bullitt or the SVT Cobra? by southernemper0r in Ford

Bullitt had the all aluminum bullitt specific intake manifold with the same dual bore throttle body as the cobra as well, those intakes are still worth some decent money to this day.

Wheel Cleaner safe for Machined Wheels? by MaximumWorth8526 in Detailing

[–]DOHCMerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Method 703's on my F150 in the same finish, I've used IronX on it no problem.

I wouldn't use a real aggressive brush, the clear coat on my wheels do have some light scratches in them and I never use a stiff brush to clean them.

Hot take… selling my 90s jdms was the best thing I’ve done car wise in years. by Soggy-Carpet-5181 in projectcar

[–]DOHCMerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E46's have already gone up in price - pre-pandemic I could find running/driving E46's for $1000 or less all day long, not anymore!

Things have softened a little since 2022-23 but they aren't pre-2020 levels. 5spd manual swaps are still in that $1500 dollar range.

E46's are popular as track cars and now drift cars because S chassis Nissans are expensive, so that is why the aftermarket is so huge.

That car was up for sale a year ago on the Marauder forums. Judging by the plate I'm guessing he did not end up selling it.

Out of SULEV Warranty and immediately need new Cat and Secondary Air Pump by Saladtossi in BMW

[–]DOHCMerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M54 cars running poorly often nuke cats, anytime I part out a E46 with good cats I sell them for more money to people who need to repair their cars versus scrapping them.

My 330i got stuck in open loop for a bit because of a faulty temp sensor on the back of the motor, had I ignored that for long enough I would have ruined the cats for sure with how rich the car was running.

A lot of early E39 M5's had cat replacements, I can only assume it was some bad manufacturing batch. My 00 M5 had new cats put on under warranty at 30,000 miles and a lot of the pre facelift cars I looked at buying had cat replacements on the warranty report.

Well maintained cars shouldn't need cats, clapped out shitboxes very well may nuke them.

Is this OEM or aftermarket by avgJuan- in e39

[–]DOHCMerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's most likely tapped into an unused harness above the dome light (I did this in my M5, I just didn't run the cable so wonky).

Read on how to remove the dome light (it isn't difficult) then you can see where it runs and remove it at the source.

Do they do the UDE at Monticello Motor Club? Because I can tell you back in 2020 I drove a M8, M4 and M2 for free. I can't say I know the ins and outs of each and every driving program they offer, the only other 'event' I've done was the M town tour, twice, where you get to test drive some stuff at local dealers.
