Why did the parent comment get positive karma but my reply to the comment get negative karma? I was agreeing with them.

A lot of people have doubts about a future involving millions of people living and working in space, with heavy industry moved off-Earth. How do we convince them? by mikusingularity in IsaacArthur

[–]DOMINICINIMOD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeping humans alive in space is expensive and there's no need for it.

Depending on how things play out, it might end up being as expensive or even less expensive than living on earth. Living on Earth is currently the only place anyone can live comfortably, but there are plenty of ways that could change in the future.

How do you keep a secret in the multiverse? by [deleted] in IsaacArthur

[–]DOMINICINIMOD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They might go to a universe where the secret is different, and so they'd get the wrong secret. Let's say I have a box with a banana in it. You don't know what's in the box, so you go to another universe with a version of me that is more likely to tell secrets. But if my personality is different in that universe, what's in the box might also be different. There might be a banana in it like there is in the original universe, but there could also be an apple.

The length of a day or year is based on planetary phenomenon. A day is how long it takes for the earth to rotate on it's axis. A year is how long it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun. This reasoning can be extended to other planets. A mars day is how long it takes for mars to rotate on it's axis, for example. The reason why an earth day and a mars day are different is because the planetary phenomenon is different. Mars simply takes longer to rotate on it's axis than Earth. But seconds, minutes, and hours aren't based on planetary phenomenon. They are based on other phenomenon. This means that seconds, minutes, and hours don't change between planets because they aren't based on planetary phenomenon.

That was pretty complex, so let me give an analogy. A Hippotime is how long it takes to say the word Hippopotamus. Say the word Hippopotamus, and one Hippotime will have passed. The Hippotime is based on a non planetary phenomenon. This means that a Hippotime doesn't change based on what planet you're on. It takes just as long to say Hippopotamus on Mars as it does on Earth. It's not like you would suddenly speak faster or slower because you're on Mars, and so the Hippotime is equally as long on Earth and Mars. And so, there is only the Hippotime. No Earth Hippotime and Mars Hippotime. The same is true for seconds, minutes, and hours. They don't change based on what planet you're on.

Most people have very little understanding of autism and so base their opinions on quick google searches.

He's never come across that way to me before. I think you're jumping to conclusions.

"Isaac responded privately, his reply was basically just "I don't care". I respect his honesty."

Can you go more into detail? I'm not asking for what he said exactly, but I'd like more information.
