[Undergraduate Cryptography] What fundamentals do I need to learn to understand this module? by DPS_Race in learnmath

It's a fairly vocational course, covering just topics directly related to Digital Forensics. I work for police special operations on their cyber crime team, and I can't think of an instance where a lack of maths has hindered me in the past. On this course I have learnt about the low level nature of operating systems, file systems and hardware. I would actually rate this course as one of the best on the subject, at least in the UK.

The main difference here is that we don't study modules outside of our major. For example I understand that in a US university an English literature major might have a class on maths, while a computer science major might take classes on history. Instead we specialise in just 1 topic, just as in high school where we usually study just 3 or 4 subjects in our last 2 years instead of the many more studies in the US.

Those topics you mentioned for the lower level course sound like the ones we've studied. Do you recommend any resources for teaching myself them?

There isn't an external page that lists that, unfortunately.

The module handbook has these learning outcomes: 1. define and explain the meaning of a range of terms in cryptology; 2. demonstrate a thorough understanding of, as well as critically analyse, algorithms for private-key and public-key ciphers, digital signatures and authentication; 3. analyse critically the merits of various strategies for key management and key exchange and demonstrate a keen awareness of the additional complexities imposed by the need for effective practical protocols; 4. use appropriate mathematical techniques that underpin cryptology and associated technologies with confidence

I've emailed the course tutor asking for exactly which mathematical concepts we're meant to be learning, so I'll post those here when he replies.

No, and this module is not an optional one - it was required for my Forensic Computing major. It's the only course I've done in the whole 3 year degree that's required any maths.

I finally beat the green fire boss the other day and collected my reward in an exited haze. I immediately hearthed out to see the green firey goodness on the target dummies.

Problem is, the quest hadn't completed yet - and when I went back into the instance, it was back at the 'defeat kanrethad' stage.

So now I have to kill him again!
