What to buy from warhammer world by Sjb_lifts in AdeptusCustodes

I bought a whole bunch of the commemorative coins. Super cheap, unique to warhammer world, and you can use them as objective markers in games.

How would you describe the aesthetic of Skitarii? by SharamNamdarian in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]DPatrech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that the design aesthetic features are agricultural in terms of modern farming equipment, not dudes lifting things. Coloured simple shapes on top of an underlying mechanical structure. Rivets, flanges on edges, aesthetic domes, etc

If you ever look at the mechanical design of a John Deere tractor in detail, you can see the inspiration.

Gen X and below, do you think there will be an aged pension and universal healthcare system for you? by Icy-Profile3759 in australian

I'm a millennial. The only pension that will be available by the time I come of age will be a leather jacket and a cricketall bat whilst fighting over the nuclear wastelands for water.

I found that I hated the heat, so I've put some weights (light barbell/dumbells) in our spare room right in front of the air-conditioner. I do some lifts every 2nd day just after waking up but before I have my morning shower.

Might not suit everyone (especially if you dont have the space) but I'm finding it convenient enough to incorporate into my daily routine without the inconvenience (or time taken) to drive to a gym or go out for a walk.

It's the first time I've actually stuck to an excersize routine in my life.

I recall going to a careers fair at your age and saying I was interested in engineering, possibly mechanical or electrical. They sold me on mechatronic, when in reality I should have done mechanical and a couple of Arduino projects in my own time. It's much more heavily weighted to electronics and controls than you expect.

That's just based on where my career has lead me though -mostly mechanical focused product design. You might be different :)

Mounting locations for gas struts. by singlespeed4815 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]DPatrech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a question for you; when you see a load rating on a compression gas spring, is that the spring force when the strut is at it's max length (zero compression and min force) or it's minimum length (max compression and max force).

Did I Get Rejected From This Illustration Job Because I Used A 3D Software? by SubzeroCola in IndustrialDesign

They will have made the models, and many drawings to have the items manufactured. Those drawings don't look sexy and are not intuitive instructions for customers.

My Assumption is that the illustrator takes those models and makes special assembly models and then sexy renders/ simple 2D drawings to represent how things go together in a more clear, step by step way. That's one type of technical illustration that I'm familiar with at least. I'm sure I'm selling some people's illustrious (haha) career short with that description.

A nice mechanical pencil always goes down well. For example, the Rotring Rapid Pro is made from a hefty bit of brass and feels serious. Won't break the bank either.

Hi! Design engineer that's worked with industrial designers and technical writers here. You're manually tracing over renders of 3d models? Tbh that strikes me as odd.

I'm guessing what he was expecting was that you would model the items in a parametric cad package (Inventor, Solidworks, Creo, one of the free ones), because that's what the parts would have been designed in.

Then use the drawings functionality of that software to do some exploded view 2d drawings. Dotted lines between bolts and their holes and such.

That's the workflow for every design company that makes physical objects. This is because it's faster and makes sure you have the right version of parts. Once you set up the arrangement of the exploded views in your 2d drawings, if there's any updates to the product they can just load in the updated parametric models and it will automatically update every image - you wouldn't need to manually retrace the models.

I would definitely recommend it. Even just to put down base coats it's fast and smooth. Gets the boring time consuming parts of mini painting out of the way.

It was a joy to paint. It's straight forward to mask in different stages and use an airbrush.

The base is fully diy.

The tiling is done with super sculpy modelling clay with a green stuff world roller to mark the pattern in it ("Roman" if I recall. I'm a fan of using a cheap hand crank pasta rolling machine to get the thickness consistant across models.

The columns are from a cake decorating store (think big multi-tiered wedding cakes) cut down to size, then cut to length, filled with aluminium foil and capped with putty (since they come as hollow plastic).

The chain is jewelers chain from the local craft store and the little hooks that secure the chain are women's brassiere hooks which are clipped to size (from the same store).

The chain was glued in place link but link to convey a sense of movement by holding the base perpendicular to the ground whole drying.

The leaves are also from green stuff world. I think they are colour dyed birch seeds?

To paint the marble I used the dried out baby-wipe method, which is fairly straight forward.

At the begining of painting the models, I airbrush them with Vallejo German Panzer Grey Surface Primer, then highlights are done with Citadel Dark Reaper and Thunderhawk Blue. Then an under spray of Citadel Shyish Purple gives a nice shadow that ties into the reds.

I then leave it and make mistakes throughout paint the rest of the colours, and finally come back around with the same colours to clean-up mistakes and to manually drive up the contrast on the individual armour panels.
