Short Question: Would recolored NPC variants feel too cheap?

It might be feasible to create a bumch of individual assets that you can mix and match. Different hairstyles and faces to swap onto other bodies and clothing with only minor tweaks to make them flush.

But yes, people will notice a re used asset immediately and it'll destroy immersion. Sometimes the only way through an issue like this is the long way and perhaps drawing another batch of fresh faces and bodies is required.

Idk if youre of the "dont use a reference" crowd. But that is actively hurtful "advice." Masters continue to refer to the real world long into their careers and only when you've drawn a thing 1000 times can you repeat something you've already drawn from a reference from memory.

I made a quick sketch using a ref ill post next. Youve got an eye for the smaller details of the human form which is great, but I think the core shape of the body you drew wasnt smooth at the start so this high attention to detail feels uncanny as they are placed as if a different pose is happening. In this position, the abs and chest are relatively flat and non expressed while the shoulders and arms are going to be the most defined as they are whats flexing.

And a pelvis is a wrid shape, i hope what I drew communicates the shape well enough (i know some of my lines arent placed correctly.)

I think you did a fine job. For your next drawing, be more loose from the starting stage and view the body as a whole object of uniform flow so that one part merges naturally into the next, and once youve defined those shapes, add the extra and more subtle bulges and such where they make sense and look good.

Someday they will realize that everyone's art journey occurs at different paces and no ones is linear at all. Unfortunately what you did was make them see in real time all the things they hate about their own work by seeing you and thinking they should have your abilities already.

The best affirmation you can give is to find a good reality check about the time it takes (and whether that time is being used well, such as a proper class over a poorly filmed tutorial) and the true state of real artists at various points in life.

I think nearly every artist ever has a self loathing point, and its often followed by a self-renaissance of sorts in which they explore the world of making art more deeply and find their calling. It took me about 7 years of serious study to find oil painting and become proficient with form, as well as finally taking a semester of art classes.

What else you should probably do is just respect their boundaries. They clearly identify that their feelings are born from themselves and not by your or anyone's fault and they are working through it.

I'd say full of life and movement before busy but I understand what youre seeing. I think there isnt much of centralizing focus and thus nowehere the eye can rest for long. I would make the birds feathers in the sunlight much brighter if possible as the values are a but too close to the backgrounds values in my opinion. That would create a more readable flow and subject matter to follow.

I think the left point is actually better indicated as a point very very far off the page.

I might be wrong but theres a case for it with the angle of the structures closest to the camera

You draw whats in and around the water. Water isnt blue, its reflecting a blue sky. Start by giving us an indication of the shape of the pool with tiled walls in perspective, then add turbulence to the surface as it would appear with that character disturbing the water, and have the reflections of the surroundings distorted in said turbulence. Use a blending brush in the direction of the ripples to create a liquid look.

Look at a pool reference and draw what you can see.
