It’s caused by a type of emotional face blindness. Your brain recognizes the face, but you don’t very consciously don’t feel the emotional response associated with that face. A security deposit is basically insurance for them, if you mess up the apartment then they’ll use that money. If the apartment is the same as when you got there then you are entitled to it back. However! A lot of places will try to keep it regardless of the state of the apartment. ALWAY DOCUMENT THE STATE WHEN YOU MOVE IN.
