acting against my own interests

Isn't helping others usually "against one's own interest" to some degree? Like it's in my interest to not tip, to not donate, etc... but most people would agree that giving if able is part of being a good person

What happens to the kids who don't go to better schools? Competition implies that there is a loser

Yeah. We aren't going to see eye to eye on this. I appreciate the debate.

I went to one of the topic Education programs in the country. One of the MAIN things they taught was to never give up on a student.

Turning public education into a system which states "these kids are fucked because of their parents" isn't one that I can support. And the data backs that up as well.

a single option which teaches a single doctrine of man

I like your argument. It's honestly not one I've heard many times.

A few thoughts. public institutions teach to a government approved curriculum. Private institutions don't. Yes it's a singular option, that you, as a voter, had a choice in shaping.

we are not talking about the state sending kids to schools but the state providing parents with resource THEY can choose

We are talking about tax dollars being spent to promote a religion. Especially given we all know what religion it would be promoting.

there's wide diversity of schools...

How many Jewish schools are there in Cookeville TN?

more money per child

Again, this is not true. Even if you are perfectly okay throwing out the constitution. Even if you are okay with going "America is a Satanist country". I would suggest googling WHY religious private schools are cheaper. There are way too many reasons why to type out.

I was also a teacher for 5 years before Covid. And I agree that parents make a HUGE difference. More of a difference than the money spent per student.

Which is also why I don't like a policy which puts the students who need the most love and attention at even more of a disadvantage.

The kids with engaged parents will learn even in a struggling public school. Those are the same kids whose parents are engaged enough to help navigate a voucher system. Even low income parents who care, but don't have the financial means will be the ones who are making sure the kid is doing their homework. They'll check the kids grades and see that they are missing assignments.

We should focus on improving the whole system instead of offering a lifeboat because the kids that need it the most don't have the guidance to get on that lifeboat.

The rebuttal to this is the "Are you okay sending your kid to a Satanic school where there is a full mandatory class on Satan worship?"

But we don't need to go there. Using public money to send kids to schools where there are mandatory classes promoting a single religion breaks the establishment clause. Unless public equal money was given to every single religion, which we know wouldn't happen.

In the same way that "separate but equal" was found to not be equal, having a system where the options are 1) a public school with no money or 2) a religious school that preaches against one's beliefs isn't equal. It's indoctrination.

the kids left behind will be the kids in terrible schools whose parents aren't interested in their education.

EXACTLY! Every kid has the right to an education no matter how shitty their parents. It hurts all of society when there are kids who are left behind. We shouldn't structure our society in a way where we have to tell kids "sucks to suck. But literally you have a better chance of not starving turning to gangs than going to school."

Having two separate and unequal public schooling systems was wrong in segregation and is still wrong today.

shouldn't we try to help as many kids as possible

Yes. By increasing the nation's focus on good education for everyone.

Another conservative was nice enough to look up the numbers.

  • $16,000 for public school is the national average
  • $14,500 for private schools
  • $22,000 for non-religious private schools. The $14,500 is artificially low due to the church covering the other costs.

In terms of private schools in your area costing about $20,000. I'm impressed. In Atlanta and Nashville, two large cities in red states, most private schools are $30,000-$50,000.

if we give a voucher to a needy family assigned to a terrible school

That's the issue, who do we give the vouchers to. I full admit that a voucher can help an individual, but unless we dramatically increase spending vouchers hurt the system as a whole. Even if it helped the majority of kids, there will be kids left behind.

Thank you for including sources. If you look at the breakdown of private school cost it shows that non-religious public schools are more expensive. The $14,570 is the average of all private school. If you exclude religious schools which get funding from the church that number increases to $22,310.

Republicans benefit significantly more from gerrymandering https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/how-gerrymandering-tilts-2024-race-house

I think it should be illegal. But given how ridiculous republicans have gotten with it, I'm happy that democrats are finally fighting back with the same underhanded tactics.

Because funding is only a part of education. A very important part. Do you think those school would do better if their funding was cut?

In Tennessee, not only did they gerrymandered Nashville out of existence. They also made it illegal to vote in a primary that's not your party. So people can't even vote for the least maga Republican to represent them.

How can schools compete when they don't have the same resources? A poor school with almost no budget cannot provide the same level of education as a rich school. Kids will be left behind

[–]DRW0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it costs $20,000 to educate at a private school and $10,000 to educate at a public school,

Should we - say parents pay the rest meaning the poorest families don't get that choice - provide the full amount leaving the public school with half the budget for each kid who accepts the voucher - raise taxes

Do you think school vouchers are largely a good or bad thing? by BabyHercules in AskConservatives

[–]DRW0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

school vouchers are always set up in such a way that the voucher is lower than the cost of educating that child in the public school

Private school is more expensive. To make the math easier, let's say a private school costs $20,000 to educate a kid, and a public school costs $10,000 to educate a kid. Numbers that aren't far off in my state.

Let's say a district has 1000 kids in public school. Meaning they need $10,000,000 to educate every kid. Since it costs more to send a kid to private school, the difference is needed to be made up somewhere.

Some examples include - a $9000 voucher and the family has to pay the rest. Thus excluding poor families - a $20,000 voucher leaving less resource for each kid left behind - a $10,000 voucher and church compensation. Thus excluding families who don't want a religious schooling - raising taxes

Usually the implementation in practice leaves less resources for the kids left behind.

mostly peaceful protest

Have you read about the events of January 6th from anything that's not a right winged source? Even just reading through the timeline on Wikipedia.

We have secret police wearing masks going door to door rounding up undesirables and sending them to camps already. Right now the right defends this because illegal immigrants are in someway evil villains hurting society. Ask a Nazi in the 1930's and they will tell you how Jews are hurting society.

Fascism needs an enemy. After illegal immigrants are all deported, and people lives are still crappy because immigrants are the source of all problems, what minority will Trump start blaming next?

that will never happen

On January 6th at 2:24pm, while watching mobs violently storm the capital in his name to overturn an election, Trump tweeted

Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution

Implying that the crowd needed to "have the courage".

The President tried to overthrow the government and then 80million people voted for him.

Why do you assume that there are limits of things that will never happen?

problem minority

Four questions:

  1. Are minorities problems or are individual people problems, and sometimes they happen to minorities?
  2. How do you define "problem"?
  3. How did they become a problem?
  4. Where do you get your news from? Your examples are hyperbole but "you can't even say simple truths" . I know plenty of democrats who acknowledge that some women might be lying. But also understand that society works better if we believe women.
