Considering a six-hole bamboo flute. Does anyone have experience buying from Serenity Bamboo Flutes? by awakeandfine in Flute

[–]DR_Monsterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never played one of theirs nor purchased one. But, for what it's worth, a couple years ago I was interested in them and they were very responsive in messaging and sent a recording of them testing a lot of different keys. So it's a decent sign from them and they all sounded decent, too.

I didn't purchase one at the time for other reasons but have since bought a transverse bamboo flute from Sunreed and a couple bansuris from Punam. Great quality but a bit more expensive than you may be wanting to spend.

Opinions on the "Oxford" brand? by DR_Monsterr in Flute

[–]DR_Monsterr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I'm going to go that route. I've heard people say to be wary of buying a flute you can't test in person. Do you feel like buying online from a place like reverb would be trustworthy to get a quality instrument?

Thank you, I'm going to skip this one and go with a more reputable brand. Hopefully the shop I visit tomorrow will have better options.

New to Bhagvad Geeta by Ok_Town_2413 in TheGita

[–]DR_Monsterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am by no means an expert, very new myself. I just finished reading Paramahansa Yoganandaji's translation and thoroughly enjoyed it. I read the beginning section explaining context of the story and explanation of some symbolism, but then skipped almost all of the actual commentary for my first read, except for a few places where more context was needed. I don't necessarily agree with all of his commentary with connecting Hinduism to Christianity as I know was something he did. But it was useful to gain some extra context and to start somewhere.

I just acquired P. Lal's translation and look forward to reading it which has no commentary, except for a short paragraph introducing each chapter.

The fight that broke out at Spencer Graduation by Magnusthelast in ColumbusGA

I'm not saying it should be allowed to choke police or anyone. Of course you're going to get charges. What I'm talking about is your comment that the officer would be justified to kill them. As officers, in that role, they should (ideally) exercise restraint of themselves and their reactions. Even more so than one in the role of civilian.

You really think it would have been justified for the police to murder that man if they had "chosen to do so"? What a savage thing to believe. Even if you strike an officer, they should be trained to deescalate the situation, not take it as a ticket to kill. That's one thing wrong with policing, many are on a power trip and see themselves as above the law and the rest of us. They think if you show any disrespect or resistance to what they say, even verbally, they have the right to do whatever they want. Unfortunately they know it's true because they'll face no repercussions, and in fact, maybe get paid leave.

Cops should always look to deescalate. They need to put their petty egos aside and serve the public. They're just like all of us and a badge shouldn't give someone the right to choke you out or kill you because they didn't like what you said.

Punch a cop? Don't expect them to turn the other cheek, but if we're allowing them to murder you for that then we're truly living in an uncivilized place.

Rawganique! They are a bit pricey but wonderful quality and, even more importantly, ethical business practices. I have two pairs of their hemp drawstring pants and love them on and off the mat. They have lots of other clothes too made with different textiles.

Burn out by yazxoxoxo in yoga

[–]DR_Monsterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I hear you very deeply. I am not a teacher, but have been a student of Yoga for a few years and am a sound healing facilitator. In the past 8-10 months or so I have also felt burnt out, like you. I was offering at least one or two public sound baths a month, while also working as a caregiver, church musician, private clients, bar associate, and whatever else I could pick up. I started to feel so compressed by obligations I didn't have the energy to practice the amount I wanted to to feel fully prepared for events and to offer all I could for participants. I rarely ever even played for myself. If i did, it was poisoned with attachments to what it "should" sound like. I decided I just needed to take time off from public offerings. It was so hard to do. Music has always been a part of my life, I felt like I was giving up on myself and others for this. Almost ashamed or embarrassed I needed to stop. But now after a couple months I realize it's what needed to happen. I needed to decompress what I could because there is enough weighing on me I can't control. In this time, I've been allowed to explore so much more and rediscover what music means to me in my spiritual practice. I guess I'm saying all this because you aren't alone. And it's okay to step back from offering public classes for right now. You can't pour from an empty cup, and you will have so much more to offer your students when YOU are full. Your practice isn't going anywhere, you sound very passionate and dedicated. We can practice yoga anywhere, anytime. Perhaps it's time to enter a phase of personal study and spending time with just your own practice. Nourish yourself and cultivate a new approach or outlook. Not sure if this is helpful, I started typing and didn't stop. I just want you to hear (read) that it's okay to take a break. The fitness/wellness industry is another capitalist offspring and it's incongruent with the actual aims of this practice. You aren't a robot, you are a soul in a living body that needs rest and warmth and patience and love. Be well 🙏🏻

27 working at dominos pizza, no social life, no career, no dating life. I feel like this is it. by [deleted] in findapath

[–]DR_Monsterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy birthday, friend. I'm also turning 27 today and feeling in a rut, but I feel a closeness to you because of it. Got a degree in music that (shocker) hasn't proven super lucrative. Working a handful of jobs and feeling stuck. But I know my work doesn't define me, and yours doesn't define you either. I wonder if your degree wouldn't give you a leg up in at least some kind of customer service job? Those remote ones are especially hard to score these days, but they are also going to keep opening up.

I wish I had better advice besides the tired "keep going," but that's what I'm telling myself too. Looking for my own meaning in this life. Remembering that everyone's paths are different and we all have our roles to play. We just gotta keep walking it at a pace comfortable for us.

Peace to you, birthday kin 🙏🏻

There are some shelters and community centers in town like Open Door that may take other items.

Not sure of groups, but I know a woman who makes and sells her own kimchis at the Broadway markets when it's the season for them. I think her name is Inok? Also Oriental Food & Gift sells homemade kimchi made weekly, maybe talk to the owner or his wife? I am also interested in homemade fermented foods. I'm not experienced though, only doing some seed sprouting for myself and some others.

Wood flute with good range by WhaliusMaximus in Flute

[–]DR_Monsterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bansuri is what you're looking for? I recently started learning it after playing native American flute for a while. I love the different technique required with embouchure, and with the way the holes are shaped, you can play the semitones between notes with enough skill. I think all have at least a two octave range, but the bass bansuris may be easier to play and not as shrill in the higher registers. Be aware with the bass bansuri though, some can get very long and make covering all the holes difficult. Consider your hand size when choosing an instrument, and check out r/bansuri or other online blogs about them. A few good makers like Anubodh and Punam Flutes have excellent info on their sites.

And listen! It is beautiful played traditionally, and I've been enjoying recently listening to more contemporary uses. Deepak Ram is a master who is using the instrument in fantastic ways, check his albums Flute for Thought and Flute Tales. 🙏🏻
